I'm not sure how long the old grain elevator in Adams, OK has left but I managed to get a picture of it before it met its end. There are no tricks here. This is the precarious angle that this old elevator currently resides at.

I shot this on 8x10 and had hoped to utilize that shot for my grain elevator project. Alas, I'm still having woes with the 8x10 setup. So I give you a digital version edited in Silver Efex to mimic what I was trying to accomplish.

Taken in Rosebush, Michigan.

Leaving our overnight stay relatively early in the day and not having far to go to our destination, we thought we'd poke around to see what we could find. Being from an urban environment, this was one of the places we thought was worthy of a shot or two.

Madonna interviews Maurice inside Val Marie's old grain elevator. Maurice's father used to be the agent in charge of this facility, but the old building has been closed for many years and efforts to restore it inside and out are ongoing. Madonna has created award winning radio documentaries, although in recent years she has been more involved with music, performance art, and writing. Regardless of the format, she cannot resist a good story, and no doubt the interview is on file somewhere awaiting future development.

I photograph whatever comes my way; if my friends are doing something interesting, I'll probably be there to document it. For this shot, I toned down a very contrasty RAW original by applying some HDR processing. Then I converted to monochrome and added a light sepia wash.

As an eastern city kid, I was amazed at these colourful, industrial behemoths when I first saw them; some things never change.

Stumbled across this cool grain elevator when out searching for covered bridges. Thought that it was very cool and unique. Located in Greencastle, IN

From the archives: Lepine, Sask., in the winter of 2017.

This was one of my only winter trips back to Saskatchewan since I moved away, and I had so many wonderful shots of the elevators in Lepine and a recently demolished one in nearby Wakaw -- only to lose most of them when my USB stick got corrupted. Luckily this one survived.

A view of the grain elevator at Mountaire Farms in Frankford, Sussex County, Delaware. The older building in the foreground is labeled as the Frankford Water Plant on Google Maps but I doubt that was the original use of that building.

Boissevain had 3 grain elevators when I first visited in 2016. Alas, this one, formerly operated by United Grain Growers, is the last still standing in 2023.

I think this was Collingwood Grain when it was in use. It now seems to primarily serve as a junkyard.

Stavely is a farming community in southern Alberta, Canada. It is located 110 kilometres (68 mi) south of Calgary on Highway 2 and 16 km (9.9 mi) east of Willow Creek Provincial Park.

Stavely was named for Alexander Staveley Hill, Managing Director of the Oxley Ranching Company that was founded in 1882 by John R Craig on 100,000 acres of grazing rights.

The Canadian Pacific Railway once ran through the town. Its closure led to the removal of all but one of Stavely's grain elevators.

For the men in my life...

I went out one starlit night to photograph the two grain elevators at the edge of town. This is the older of the two, renovated a couple of years ago. For this image I made two separate exposures, defocussing on one, and then in Photoshop I added some gaussian blur to further fuzz the shot. Then I blended it with a tack sharp version until I had the effect I wanted. The light on the elevator is ambient, from village street lights.

It's a bit like an Orton image, the technique perfected a few decades ago by Mike Orton with slide film. He would shoot the same scene in and then out of focus, then sandwich the two slides in a single slide mount. The result was a slightly surreal view with a strange glow.

I was rolling westward across Saskatchewan on Highway 51, west of Kerrobert, when I spotted an elevator about a mile to the south. I turned off the highway to check it out and came across the remains of what probably never was much of a town. There was single abandoned house still standing and a lot of grass surrounding the Superb elevator and annex.

The amazing thing about this elevator was that it still has the Pool emblem on it. Most Pool markings were painted over when the Pool assets were sold off. Oddly someone had been by fairly recently and dumped the remains of a corn boil in the elevator driveway. Why there? There was nothing around for miles!

I spent some time wandering around the area, checking out the elevator from all angles.

Amanda and I roadtripped back to Illinois/Wisconsin for the holidays, so I'll be adding pictures from that trip as I have time.

I'll start with a bit of a melancholic shot. The Nutrien Ag elevator in Cozad, NE is being torn down as the owners decided it had become a liability. This shot was taken early on the morning of December 23rd, 2018. Most of the elevator was gone as the moon set into the soft colors of the western sky. I imagine that by now most of the remaining core that is still standing here has probably succumbed to the demolition crew as well.

This is the second time I've roadtripped home through Nebraska and come across an elevator meeting its end. I also was witness to the early stages of demolition of the old wood elevator in Gothenburg several years back. If I ever come across the Willow Island elevator being torn down, I may break down and weep. It's one of my favorite elevators on the UP in Nebraska and I've used it for several memorable pictures already.

Came across some old color photo pencils the other day while cleaning up my office. This was a boxed set that included a bottle of solution, some cotton applicators. The pencils were used to hand color BW photos back in the day of enlargers and darkrooms. I remember using them a few times. The results were only as good as the artist. But in general, the colors tended to be rather blocky and not nearly as subtle and varied as one would like. Also the color might get overlay saturated in one area and be virtually indistinguishable in others. Colors would often stray beyond the section your were attempting to color and result in a bleed over to an adjoining area. Or you might miss an area leaving odd imperfections in coverage. So not very a practical process, but quaint in its way. This image of an old grain elevator inspired me to recreate the look of my color photo pencils. The entire exercise would not have been conceived had I not decided to do a little spring cleaning!
