The elevator in Pettisville, Ohio is a perfect backdrop for railroad photography. Many a fan have focused a lense here. And for good reason.
Through the years, I have taken my fair share of pictures here. Located at milepost 324 on the Chicago Line, it is easily accessible from Toledo.
When I was the engineer on the east local out of Bryan, I spotted hoppers here. The elevator used to get cars weekly, but not so much now.
On this trip, the railroad has been shut down due to wind! No joke. Train movements in both directions were stopped until a storm front passed. It is a first in my career!
If the railroad is going to hold us somewhere, this is by far the best spot to stop. I say this for two reasons.
Obviously, the first is for photography. On this day, I shot every conceivable angle of the elevator and the train. So much so, I am probably finished shutterbugging here.
The second is food. Pettisville is home to probably the best butcher in the area, Pettisville Meats. It is directly adjacent to the mainline and the elevator. After some photography, treat yourself to their jalepeno and cheddar meat sticks or the special of the day!
Enjoy my Pettisville Perspective!
This is one of the largest grain elevators in the world. It holds 17 million bushels and is half a mile long.
Another town elsewhere in Manitoba will soon lose its elevator. They have been falling at a rapid rate in the last few years.
This was my first chase on the CP main west of the Twin Cities, and I was hoping to shoot the F's passing a few small elevators, and I think this was the best I did. Thankfully SRG was already in position - foaming new territory is a helluva lot easier when Steve's always a quarter mile ahead of you.

Pool B with annex, still standing in Major, Saskatchewan. I am not sure what the other structure is. I have seen older photos of the two elevators and there doesn't appear to be any significant structure in that area.
4 image stitched panorama from the Z7 that I rented for this trip. I hope to get a trip report together for my time with the Z7 soon. Foreshadowing: it has some quirks but I like it. A lot.
Manitoba, 1979. For those who grew up on the prairies, the grain elevators were commonplace. For a kid from the city in the east, they were amazing, colourful giants from an unknown world.

Many small town and farming communities have grain elevators. These bins can be fairly small or they may be gigantic. No matter the size, they are indispensable for the collection and dispensing grains grown in this and other countries.

We drove by it again a couple of weeks ago and they had torn it down.
