One of the tools of the trade when I started teaching in 1974.

Vancouver, Canada

On my way to the Grand Canyon Railway photo charter, I was lucky to arrive on a day the Apache Railway was operating. It's nice to see this operation still going thanks in large part to BNSF, which sends them cars for repair and cleaning. It's also nice to see a train with no graffiti like this one climbing upgrade out of Holbrook on Oct. 24, 2019.

RHS Wisley

RHS Wisley was founded by George Ferguson Wilson, a Victorian businessman in 1878, he made it his ambition to make difficult plants thrive in English conditions. So he created The Oakwood Experimental Garden. This was a 60 acre plot in total, of which part became the garden. Unfortunately he died in 1902 and the whole site was purchased by Sir Thomas Hanbury. Sir Thomas also owned the famous ‘Giardini Botanici Hanbury, at Mortola in Italy, close to the French border. He gave both properties to the RHS in and around 1903, just four years before his death in 1907.

The main laboratory for scientific research was opened in 1907 but this building proved to be inadequate so major improvements were made and the exterior was rebuilt during the First World War. In 1985 it was designated a Grade II Listed building.

This garden now covers 240 acres in which are housed a large glasshouse for tropical, temperate and arid climates, formal and informal gardens, an arboretum, Alpine Houses, Rock garden, Pinetum, a Wild garden and a Walled garden plus many more features.

This is another place worth while visiting, especially, if like me, you’re a member of the RHS.

Philadelphia

I was fortunate to travel to the East Coast with 8th graders for 18 years. We started in Boston and ended in Washington DC. I'm working on a book of images from our trips.

Elfreth's Alley is a historic street in Philadelphia, dating to 1702. As of 2012, there are 32 houses on the street, which were built between 1728 and 1836. It is our nation's oldest residential street.

Happy Valentines Day! May the force be with you and yours...Just a Valentine's image for my followers. Hope you have a great day! Yes, my sweet granddaughter gave me this image.

Coxo is a favorite spot for the photographers especially from the highway. Trying to get trackside is not as simple although rewarding with the angles of the grade accentuated by the pond alongside the track. The bark of the two locomotives echos across the valley of Wolf Creek.

i've always loved this school picture, because I actually had a broken arm -- I wanted my picture taken with the sling around my neck, but the photographer insisted not!

I have stuck in many people's memory from that year in school, because I actually broke BOTH arms, sequentially (not at the same time) -- first one I fell down on the school playground at a parent-teacher conference night -- skinned my knee & didn't even notice my arm, til the next morning when mom decided I was holding my arm strangely and asked if I could rotate my wrist -- I looked blankly at her and said, "no, why?" so I'd fractured my right wrist -- spent six weeks in a sling, and then the day after I got it off, I fell down rollerskating and broke my left arm.

yes, i am clumsy.

my grandmother crocheted that dress for me -- my sister had one with a sort of raspberry color instead of the green.

On a snowy, foggy December morning in 1938, a Jordan School District bus collided with Rio Grande’s Flying Ute. The crossing was at 102nd South and 3rd West in South Jordan, Utah. 23 students and the driver were killed that morning. Fast forward to New Year’s Eve in 1995 when three Alta High Students were killed at the same crossing by an Amtrak train. In response, the city of South Jordan placed new signage at the crossing, explaining a renewed priority to close it. It would finally close when nearby 100th South was widened with automatic crossing signals and gates installed.

It won't be long before these will be prom pictures.

In run 8 as the headend rolls toward the final grade crossing as they climb towards to summit of Mullan Pass. This is a fine piece of railroad I am sad to see it returned to the BNSF.
