Panorama made of 5 pics

The water levels unusually low for this time of year photographed in the Copperfield River which is a beautiful water course in the Gulf of Carpentaria in Far North Queensland. Will on my next trip through explore the old mining town of Kinston located not that distant from here. This small town owes its origins to the discovery of gold in the region in the 18th century. I sometimes wonder what my parents were thinking as this I wandered at will as a small child but guess in those days children had a heightened sense of self preservation. I know my sense of joy and freedom were something to be thankful. Freshwater crocodiles in this water course these days. A wonderful stretch of river so under explored compared to the much trammelled gorges of Central Australia.

Also unusual at this time of year were the patches of showers and clouds in the sky as in this monsoon country experiences a distinct "wet" and "dry" periods of time.

Finally, my first trip to Australia and I'm blown away by the contrasts between a dark red soil, a deep blue sky and the rich fauna. Definitely worth the wait!

In the Columbia River Gorge

Vallée d'Ossau - France

A mile or so from the delicate waterfall this raging torrent flows (so much water in Wales) through an inaccessible gorge. Such a shame you can't get near to water level as there are several falls. This was the best I could do with the gear I had with me, which didn't include a tripod! (I leant against a tree).

3928 and 4187 lead the typically short L863 through Ableman's Gorge nearly 4 years ago. I've tried dubbing this spot "The Boar's Head", as immediately below was the former location of a rock formation which had a semblance to it's namesake. This rock was removed when the CNW double tracked the line through the Gorge.

Nothing new here, just a recycled location with a cruddy vertical comp as I've already posted the horizonal here. But I figured I'd take a trip down memory lane today. I spent a lot of time on the Reedsburg in 2016-2017 and Ablemans Gorge was one of my favorite spots.

But like most good things on the Southern Division, this job was bound to turn sour as well. As 2017 waned into 2018, L863's departure from Reedsburg slowly slipped later and later into the day. Eventually, the counterpart job L463 wouldn't even make it to Reedsburg on the first day, which necessitated a relief crew being added. Eventually, the lay-over job in Reedsburg was eliminated all together in a cost-saving effort.

Now days, a Rock Springs based crew handles the Reedsburg-Baraboo traffic while a Madison based crew does a Baraboo turn. No more early morning departures from Reedsburg, no more all-day chases down to Madison, and significantly less opportunities for two units. At least the T&E guys that work this job are still great.

I have more photos from this spot and the rest of the line in my Reedsburg Subdivision Album.

Maybe not as colourful as previous years, in part due to Ophelia & Brian stripping a lot of the trees. Nonetheless the Gorge still sparkles with the dying embers of summer

Spectacular Gorge in the West MacDonnell Ranges.

On our day trip to Oregon, our last stop was the Oneonta Gorge. This place was littered with people. I am amazed I even got one picture without people in it.None the less it was still a great place to see and a nice spot to cool off.

Photographs made while exploring and documenting Ohio’s State Nature Preserve system. Some of the only places left in the state where nature remains uninterrupted. These lands are underappreciated, underfunded, but rich with a subtle beauty that I revere with my view camera.

Gorges Viewpoint

Wir hatten Glück - kurz bevor wir an diesem tollen Aussichtspunkt ankamen, hörte es (an dieser Stelle) zu regnen auf, in der Ferne war der Regen jedoch noch zu sehen.

The gorge, cut by the Manawatu River, divides the Ruahine Ranges to the North (right), and the Tararua Ranges on the left.

The road on the left was closed in 2017 after a landslide, and never reopened. The railway line on the right still operates.

Glen Helen Gorge is located about 130 km west of Alice Springs, in the West MacDonnell Ranges in central Australia.

The gorge has been created by Finke River, which usually is a string of quiet waterholes, but can also become a torrent during rare flood periods.

We are on day four of the workshop and things have been going great so far! The first evening and following morning of the workshop we had amazing light. Each day has been just as good and we have been working hard shooting waterfalls during the day and wildflowers in the mornings and evenings. We finish up tomorrow morning and then I will be heading off for a couple of days of personal shooting some where in Oregon or Washington (haven't decided where just yet) before meeting another group next week in Olympic National Park.

I will have many more images to share when I get the time to actually process them. Until then I hope you enjoy this image and please feel free to share and comment.

Cheers,

Joe

Meeting at about 11am on Sat 8th Nov to shoot Padley Gorge - hopefully not in an endless downpour which put a good number of people off last time!
