Hiking the 16km-long Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest canyons, is high on the list of must-dos for many Crete visitors. There’s an undeniable raw beauty to the canyon with its soaring cliffs and needle-nose passageways. The hike begins at an elevation of 1230m just south of Omalos and ends in the coastal village of Agia Roumeli

This was a little spot that we camped at for a couple of nights...we were lucky, we had all to ourselves. Sadly the small amount of water in the gorge was not safe to swim in, due to some microbes that could cause brain damage. We risked using it to wash our feet!

Over many years the ice hag gorged out some unusual features in Iceland. This was on the east of the island.

We took my two cousins for a drive along the Gorges du Verdon yesterday. We stopped earlier in Moustiers for a coffee while a ferocious thunderstorm raged outside. Once it had abated we ran for the car and set off. The rain ceased but the lightning continued. It was spectacular (and a little bit scary). When we came back the same way about two hours later we were greeted by this. Quite the contrast to a few hours previously.

Der Pavillon in der Schlucht an einem kalten und verschneiten Wintertag, nur wenige Sonnenstrahlen erreichen überhaupt den Grund der Schlucht.
The pavilion in the gorge on a cold and snowy winter day, only a few rays of sunlight even reach the bottom of the gorge.
in Snaefellsns penisula, Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge is a natural formation, narrow fissure several hundreds of meters into the mountain, with a little river at the bottom After about 70 meters you meet a little waterfall and have to do some climbing to get farther into the mountain. That is as far as I have gone. Still it is incredible with the narrow walls several tens of meters high around you.
Corrieshalloch is one of the most spectacular gorges of its type in Britain and provides striking evidence of how glacial meltwater can create deep gorges.

Another one from a beautifully foggy Padley Gorge on Friday morning.
From mist we drove north into bright summer sunshine. In forming the gorge the Rakaia river has carved its way down eons of years of sediments leaving a highly textured cliff face beside the road. The day ended in torrential rain but that is a story for tomorrow.
Deep chasms and rock walls up to 700 metres high characterise the famous gorges du Verdon. Deep in the ground runs the famous chemin de l'Imbut. To get out of the gorge again, there is the chemin de Vidal. You then climb almost perpendicularly up the steep rock face, using a steel cable stretched along the wall on the difficult sections.

Sadly, the weather became misting, fogging with heavy rain, our uphill to the Snowndon mountains wasn't a success event.
Across the Kawarau River gorge there are still remnants of the gold digger days. Some of these can be viewed at the Goldfields Mining Centre.
The view of the Atigun River Gorge looking south into the core of the Brooks Range, seen from the front of a helicopter flying over the north ridge. The serrated ridge across the valley (~ 5000’/ 1500m) is composed up of the Fortress Mountain formation, a mix of marine and non-marine sediments, including, siltstones, conglomerates, and carbon rich strata with carbonized plant debris (logs/ coal) of Cretaceous age. Marine fossils (molluscs) occur in the lighter colored sediments. The influence of water in the drainage channels on vegetation is clear from the darker green stripes leading to the Atigun River. The higher peaks (all un-named) in the back are around 7000’ / 2100 m, some of which have remnant glaciers clinging to their slopes. At this latitude (68.5˚ N) the sun doesn’t set during the summer- this was taken around 9 pm, with the sun still fairly high in the WNW.
