mohammed (tour guide) woke me up at 04:30, and urged me to walk along the vast beach. being still sleepy, I just followed his words, walking toward the direction where the sounds of waves came from.
"ah this is heaven..." unconsciously i talked to myself when this beach suddenly jumped into my sight.
having taken some photos there, i realized that photography captures not only the beautiful sceneries in front of me, but it records every single process that the photographer reached that place. and i was strongly feeling that i was recording priceless goodwills that i had received a lot of warm kindness from many people to get to this island where i had longed for a long time.
abdulwadood (hotel manager in sana'a) managed to find a flight to soqotra on which my book had been nearly cancelled, and happily saw me off at the airport. mohammed arranged my journey on the island so that i can enjoy as many things as possible during only 3 days i could stay there...
where one finds any good impression in my photography, it is not merely from my sense or good functions of my camera, but there are surely a lot of beautiful mind of many people behind it.
i am not capable of any other things but expressing my thanks to all my friends in yemen with my photography...

Accurate scales build customer goodwill; so says the Herbert & Sons leaflet.
Here are the scales used to weigh out orders at Atkinson's. They may be old, but they are quick and accurate - I re-weighed my tea at home on my electronic scales, and the weight was spot on.
These scales were made sometime between 1910 and 1945. The maker, Herbert & Sons, was established in London in 1760 and is still trading.

Today let's see what the home looked like during my first explore before the vandals got to it!!
Sitting along a major road in a highly populated area this abandoned house sits awaiting its future. The ranch style home which was built in 1956 is currently up for redevelopment along with a few of its neighbours. I wasn't able to find any details about the project but I imagine it will be row houses that take its place, meanwhile it sits, being vandalised beyond recognition.
Here are my thoughts about this abandoned mid century time capsule. The owner enjoyed collecting things and was bordering on being a hoarder, he didn't know what to do with everything, so he decided to open a thrift store. There were electronics, books, vinyl, vacuum cleaners and whatever else you could imagine in this home. These items were found everywhere while still having a sense of organization, many of them had price stickers which is why I think it was some sort of a store. Underneath the items for sale was a lot of mid century furniture, decor and architecture which in itself is an exciting find! I am honestly not even sure if the owner of the home actually lived here, I mean there are signs of the kitchen being used but most of the rooms were just full of stuff. Even all of the bedrooms were full of stuff and there were no signs of clothing or even a bed for that matter. This is one of those locations that sticks with you and I find myself thinking about it every once in a while wondering what the entire story is.

This church in the area once known as Goodwill is one of the oldest congregations in Orange county. A rapidly growing congregation has moved down the road to a much larger modern edifice. This is still used by the congregation as its "Memorial Chapel".
Got this like two weeks ago, but I was too lazy to post (or to take a good picture for that matter). I'm really happy with the variety of pieces that came. Most sets are from Ninjago or Star Wars ranging from 2011 to 2016.
I also got a second Umarak for $12 two days ago which you can slightly see in the background.

I've really been loving the way little kids dressed in the 60's ... if only I could find a pair of dark denim overall's like Eve wears in Eve's Bayou (I stayed home sick yesterday, and got sucked into the movie channel! ... I actually really liked this movie though - specifically the shack that the old Asian fortune telling lady lives in)
Over consumption residue at the local Goodwill. So much stuff most of it crappy and ugly but no longer cheap.

The Goodwill in Roseland had these "Gulfstream Goodwill" carts. I'm no scientist, but last I checked, Roseland, on the east coast, isn't exactly "gulfstream" but what do I know?
