In a middle-class neighborhood of Iran's sprawling capital city, 17-year-old Pasha Shahed spends the summer of 1973 on his rooftop with his best friend Ahmed, joking around one minute and asking burning questions about life the next. He also hides a secret love for his beautiful neighbor Zari, who has been betrothed since birth to another man. But the bliss of Pasha and Zari's stolen time together is shattered when Pasha unwittingly acts as a beacon for the Shah's secret police. The violent consequences awaken him to the reality of living under a powerful despot, and lead Zari to make a shocking choice

My review:

I need to apologize first and foremost for being the occasional book snob. I went into this book not expecting to like it. I've never been really intrested in stories about the middle east or persia. I was bound and determined to hate the book, not expecting to understand a damn thing I was reading. I should kick myself square in the hiney for missing out on a ton of more books that I would find as equally beautiful. Rooftops of Tehran speaks to you in a way that is hard to dismiss. The story is one that will stick with you for a very long time. I've always loved coming of age stories, but this one is special.

so as well as upping my Goodreads book challenge from 25 (last year) to 30, I've decided to plan out in advance which books to read in a bid to get through the ones I need to read.

First book of the year just finished. A wonderful, inspiring, and thought-provoking work.

In April 1985, I did finish Fyodor Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov. I remember doing some of the reading on the beach. Obviously, that was a struggle! www.goodreads.com/book/show/4934.The_Brothers_Karamazov

...made me feel safe and protected; I have always considered the rain to be healing—a blanket—the comfort of a friend. Without at least some rain in any given day, or at least a cloud or two on the horizon, I feel overwhelmed by the information of sunlight and yearn for the vital, muffling gift of falling water.”

Decided to take a photo today. I'm not in love with it. I feel like I'm so busy this month but I never get anything done.

I really want to get a DeviantArt account but I just can't for the life of me decide on a username! I feel really bad because I haven't been reading any of the books I started lately. I wanted to finish Crossed by Ally Condie before monday so I could get a new book at Barnes & Noble but I just don't feel like reading.

At a breakfast meeting, trying to juggle several things at once: getting nutrition, editing a client's 128-page document, listening to discussions of letterhead and business card designs, exchanging SMS with another client, and trying to schedule the rest of my week.

I would've liked to spend today just sleeping in bed, a birthday hangover of sorts, but reality persists. Thank god for coffee and bacon.
