This is where the Ruak and Mekhong rivers meet, forming the borders of three countries: Thailand this side, Burma ahead, and Laos to the right across the Mekhong river.
The whole area, covering northern Thailand, eastern Burma and western Laos, used to be an opium growing region.

The term "Golden Triangle" was coined by the United States' CIA. From the mid-1950s until late in the 20th century, this region was the highest producer of opium and heroin in the world. (The Golden Crescent in Afghanistan has since taken that title...)

The William Penn Hotel’s Grand Ballroom is one of the few remaining two-tiered ballrooms in the country, with its beautiful balconies accented by magnificent gold leaf railings. Statuesque floor to ceiling windows climb 25-feet to a ceiling that is adorned with three sparkling antique crystal chandeliers, and gold moldings with carved detailed designs.
