Shantadurga temple is a large temple complex 33 km (21 mi) from Panaji at the foothill of Kavalem village in Ponda Taluka, Goa, India.
The temple is dedicated Shantadurga, the Goddess who mediates between Vishnu and Shiva. The deity is also called 'Santeri' colloquially. Local legends tell of a battle between Shiva and Vishnu The battle was so fierce that Lord Brahma prayed to Parvati to intervene, which she did in the form of Shantadurga. Shantadurga placed Vishnu on her right hand and Shiva on her left hand and settled the fight. The deity of Shantadurga is shown as holding two serpents, one in each hand, representing Vishnu and Shiva. She is then said have gone to Sankhwal a village in Salcette Taluka to kill the demons that were harassing the Brahmins. As a reward, she was given the name of Vijaya. Shri Vijayadurga shrine was located in Sankhwal along with Shri Shantadurga and Shri LakshmiNarsimha but was later shifted to a place called Kerim in Ponda Taluka during the Portuguese invasions. .[1]
Shantadurga is the Kuldevi (family deity) of many Konkani Saraswats, Karhade Brahmins and Bhandaris.

this foto represents a hilarious story...
so this woman dressed up, painted herself, and put cow dung in her hair to make it stick up like that...
this has nothing to do with any traditional style or custom - but little do tourists know that, so of course with that intention she does this kind of thing all the time so tourists take fotos of her and she demands money from them afterwards.
i had taken her foto, and naturally she then demanded money from me to which i said no, told her to go away (of course she's following me away at this point) so i just ignore her, thinking its rather sad she was so kind and accepting of me taking her foto before - but now suddenly hostile and angry because i dont pay...i was going off to look for neptune (was following him but lost him) when he called from behind - so the woman went back to harrass him, seeing that we were together, telling him that i owed her money for taking her foto.
to this, neptune took out his camera-phone and took a picture of a nearby merchant, yelling at her in full hindi how rediculous the notion of having to pay someone for taking their foto is, making full fun of her, with all the surrounding merchants completely cracking up in laughter...
then he took her foto *BAM* to show her again how retarded she was being, more laughter from the audience, and finally she sat down and started to grumble...
simply put, it was hilarious.
neptune often gets mistaken for a tourist or foreigner simply because he's white, and when he breaks out in full fluent hindi or whatever local language, especially in a case like this, its just too funny.
