Glamis Castle, childhood home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother

'A place of legends and fairytales.' Family home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne and a royal residence since 1372. Childhood home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, birthplace of Her Royal Highness The Princess Margaret and legendary setting for Shakespeare's famous play 'Macbeth'.

As you drive down the mile long avenue, flanked in Spring by swathes of yellow and cream daffodils, or by the autumn colours of the rows of ancient trees, you will not fail to be touched by the magic of Glamis.

Glamis Castle is the royal house that has it all; whether you are interested in ghosts, beautiful gardens, corporate hospitality or staging your Scottish wedding at this royal castle you can be sure you will receive a warm welcome and the best of Scottish hospitality.

Glamis Castle is in Angus in The Vally of Strathmore (as in the song of that name). It was the childhood home of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who married King George VI, and was later known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. I restored the photo recovered from a film roll taken in 2001 by my wife Diane.

The exterior of Glamis Castle.

There is an old story that guests staying at Glamis once hung towels from the windows of every room in a bid to find the bricked-up suite of the monster. When they looked at it from outside, several windows were apparently towel-less.

Very spooky.

Glamis Castle has been the home of the Lyon family since the 14th century, though the present building dates largely from the 17th century.
