The nickname they give Mount Fuji is not an exaggeration. Throughout the 3 weeks I was here, the mountain was always shrouded in mist and/or haze, or I was just not in a good angle for a shot, (one day I had snow for crying out loud, you'll see some of those shots later).
On this particular day I was expecting more of the same. On my way from Narusawa Ice Caves I looked out the car window and saw for a brief instant, Fuji in all her glory. After so many failed attempts, I was freaking out, I simply HAD to get this.
This shot was taken from a window in the hillside recreation of the historic village Iyashi. In the early afternoon for around 4 hours Fuji looked like this. Not completely exposed, but just enough to get the good shot I've been fantasizing about.
Not shy enough in the end apparently.
This engine is one of a pair, I'm standing on the valve gantry of the opposing engine. Located at Kempton Park Pumping Station, Hanworth, Middlesex, UK. these engines are accessed at four levels. Beneath are the two pump floors out of shot. Operating on the triple expansion principal. Triple meaning the steam is used three times entering the high pressure cylinder first (RH), then into the intermediate cylinder (middle) and finally the low pressure cylinder (LH) before returning to the boiler via the condenser. I believe these are the largest working preserved triple expansion engines in the world. These give a feel for the size of the engines fitted in ill-fated RMS Titanic. Well worth a visit on steaming days. kemptonsteam.org/collection/triple-expansion-engines/
Detail of a statue, nicely pointed out for me by Angela - we spent a wonderful day at the castle!
April 2025: A month in 30 pictures - day 28
We've been away for a few days and got back pretty late so I popped into the garden with my iPhone and grabbed a pic of this tulip, she's well on her way out but still rather lovely.

New block just off Light Square. Really let down by this architecturally. Just looks ordinary... however, I did manage to get this.
A northbound UCR, (Unit Coal Roeston), coal train snakes along the shores of the Hudson River in early March of 1989 to help restock the reserves after the long winter and get ready for a hot summer. Once a stronghold of the Conrail River Line, coal trains have now give way to other power source unit trains in the form of ethanol and oil all heading as loads in the opposite direction toward New Jersey.
You give a little love and it all comes back to you,
you’re gonna be remembered for the things that you say and do…

Never give up; for even rivers someday wash dams away.

Sometimes this place exists in a dream state. The rolling hills, nearly prairies; the sheer cliffs, the jagged rocks, the lakes from out of nowhere. The land seems to move with and against you. Swales give way to boulder fields. The web of trails, some made by us, some by animals, are a maze even if you know the way.
There are two canyons: Potholes Coulee and Dusty Lake Coulee. But within them are passages, spines, various levels and dead ends, where you are met with a wall or a cliff.
There are hidden streams and a varying number of waterfalls, depending upon the season. In the spring there are wildflowers. In the autumn, the dried remnants of these flowers provide a different color.
And always there is sage, with its captivating and drawing aroma always close at hand.
This is a place that seems so small on a map, even a minutely detailed topographical map. But you could walk dozens of miles within the confines of these coulees and never tread the same step twice.

Blue Heron(explored 01-24-2020)
Someone give this Heron a pair of ice-skates!!
I was completely caught off guard with these shots...
I was in my bird blind, working on trying to get flight action of the smaller birds, when this Heron walked into view. I noticed that my exposures were way off but I wasn't able to change my settings....I only had a small area were the Heron would be photographable so well here is the results...It was really neat to watch this Heron walking on the ice and not falling in....I did not think that the pond was frozen solid enough to hold any weight
Thank you all for your views, comments and/or faves of my photo!! :)
Coffee is real good when you drink it it gives you time to think. It's a lot more than just a drink; it's something happening. Not as in hip, but like an event, a place to be, but not like a location, but like somewhere within yourself. It gives you time, but not actual hours or minutes, but a chance to be, like be yourself, and have a second cup.

Don't Give Up - Peter Gabriel et Kate Bush
in this proud land we grew up strong
we were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail
no fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my face, I've changed my name
but no one wants you when you lose
don't give up
'cos you have friends
don't give up
you're not beaten yet
don't give up
I know you can make it good
though I saw it all around
never thought I could be affected
thought that we'd be the last to go
it is so strange the way things turn
drove the night toward my home
the place that I was born, on the lakeside
as daylight broke, I saw the earth
the trees had burned down to the ground
don't give up
you still have us
don't give up
we don't need much of anything
don't give up
'cause somewhere there's a place
where we belong
rest your head
you worry too much
it's going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don't give up
please don't give up
'got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river's flowing
that river's flowing
moved on to another town
tried hard to settle down
for every job, so many men
so many men no-one needs
don't give up
'cause you have friends
don't give up
you're not the only one
don't give up
no reason to be ashamed
don't give up
you still have us
don't give up now
we're proud of who you are
don't give up
you know it's never been easy
don't give up
'cause I believe there's the a place
there's a place where we belong
Well, I must confess: all this "West Dune Customs" stuff I came up with, should have been just something to introduce my new MOC. Obviously it got completely out of control, gaining its own dignity, so I hope you won't be disappointed with the real MOC.
Here it is, a X-34 Tatooine landspeeder revamped in a Classic Space way, another Classic Space - Star Wars mashup from me, after Rey's speeder. What's wrong with me and speeders?
I got the same idea my friend billyburg got, but he's clearly a faster builder than me, so he uploaded his version (billyburg's classic space landspeeder) to Flickr more than a month ago. I love his version so much that I almost gave up building mine; I didn't want to give the impression of copying other people's work. Luckily, this thought lasted just less than a day...
No piece has been cut or glued. For the "snot reversal tecniques" I used on the rear of the speeder and on the side of the seats I have to thank kosbrick and his tutorials.
For the turbines design credits to Larry Lars. As I already wrote, I tried at least three different versions of the turbines, but I ended up using his, the one, eventually, I was happiest with.
I think it's a very hot landspeeder, but I am, obviously, not impartial. Maybe a little too long, but at the West Dune Custom they had to lenghten the chassis to install such a badass engine. ;-)
And the license plate? Well, 1970 is the year I was born, so LL970 was a straight choice... :D
Happy Halloween Yall! <3
