- Note the warning sign for pedestrians at the right of pic - "DO NOT CROSS IF A LARGE SHIP IS APPROACHING THE BRIDGE" :o)

*********************************

HISTORICAL INFO

- On 5 January 1975, the Tasman Bridge was struck by the bulk ore carrier Lake Illawarra, bound for EZ Industries' Risdon Zinc Works with a cargo of 9,072 tonnes (10,000 short tons) of zinc concentrate.[5] It caused two pylons and three sections of concrete decking, totalling 127 metres (417 ft), to fall from the bridge and sink the ship. 7 of the ship's crew & 5 motorists were kiled in the tragedy.

TRIP INFO

- You drive your car in through the bow door and it was tied down due to the poor weather outlook. We left Port Melbourne as the sun went down.

- Unfortunately, our hopes for a reasonably smooth crossing were dashed, as a big low pressure system moved into the Great Australian Bight. The wind howled as we approached mid-crossing & the Bass Strait rollers got so big that our starboard side sleeper cabin porthole was getting regularly *thumped* though the night by walls of water & the foaming white caps of HUGE Bass Strait breakers - no sleep whatsoever - it was pretty scary - needless to say, all passengers were banned from going on the starboard mid-deck during the worst of it. It was bad enough just trying to hang on & stop rolling out of the bunk! The sound of all the big vehicles below us banging & crashing against their restraints also didn't help.

- Unsurprisingly, we heard later after we had disembarked at Devonport in Tassie that the ship had suffered some significant damage to the starboard side of the bow loading door seal & mechanism, that would need repairs after it returned to Melbourne. Thank god the return trip 2 months later was uneventful!

- The two originals were captured using a hand-panned CANON AF35M 2 (aka "Sure Shot 2" or "Autoboy 2") compact camera with KODAK KODACOLOR VR 200 (CL) 35mm color negative film.

*******************************

PROCESS INFO

- The originals were digitized using a CANON Canoscan 8800F scannner @ 2400 DPI & 48 bit color.

- Initially using Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite 8.0, the digitized copies were first manually re-sized, re-oriented, cropped & then stitched together. A further significant amount of sharpening, blending, spot repair & level adjustments was done to achieve the final result. Not a bad result for a low end camera with significant limitations for this type of shot in difficult lighting conditions!

- The Extravaganza Motor Museum was briefly part of the re-developed Esplanade Hotel after the original Hotel was demolished in 1990 by controversial entrepreneur Paul Terry, who had a dream to build a 5-star boutique, colonial-style hotel with bar and restaurant. It also had a separate building called the Extravaganza; it housed a few shops and a vintage car museum (the museum was later closed in 1993 due to Paul Terry's death and the collection was sold as too was the hotel). In 2006 plans were made to demolish the Esplanade and surrounding buildings for a new modern apartment hotel. The Extravaganza building and adjoining units were demolished in early December while the existing hotel was demolished in early 2007. The controversial move resulted in mass protest, and the site lies empty to this day. The Singaporean investors responsible put the hotel site back on the market in 2010. In November 2014, the site was sold to LandCorp for $7 million.
