Azalea hybrids have been created for hundreds of years. These genetic modifications made by humans have produced more than 10,000 different cultivar species that are propagated from cuttings. The seeds can also be collected and germinated.

From Buckden Rake. The crumbling wall here indicates an ancient settlement, possibly around 2000 yrs old. The natural stones were used to create these strongholds above the valley floor. The tiny village of Hubberholme is in the valley.
The hills were glaciated in the last ice age, about 17000 years ago. Since the ice retreated, the hills were covered in birch and later oak, but humans cleared the trees for fuel and pasture over thousands of years. Grass and moss replaced the trees, and the climate, which is almost arctic/alpine, ensured that trees found it difficult to grow in the now acid soils. Since then humans have grazed sheep on the hills (fells) which chew any saplings which may germinate. There are moves to reforest some areas, but the weather is harsh and the soil is poor, so the hills will remain open and wild. Most people like it this way...the open hills have long been a source of recreation and inspiration for all who visit. Many people outside the North of England don't realise that there is a vast wilderness in this part of the world and that much of northern England is indeed wild and unspoilt.

Sweet Pea plants are easy to grow but it is always better to soak the seed for a few hours before planting and the other method is to make a small cut in the outer case of the seed which again will aid the seeds to germinate. These plants are mainly grown against a trellis but they can also be planted in containers and let them fall over the sides and plant something different in the middle of the pot to give a new look to your garden. The Sweet Pea comes in a profusion of different colours and they are mainly perfumed, it is always better to cut off the spent flowers and by doing this it promotes new flower buds to grow and they can flower for weeks on end.
This plant is an aquatic perennial and under favourable circumstances its seeds may remain viable for many years, with the oldest recorded lotus germination being from seeds 1,300 years old recovered from a dry lakebed in China. The roots of the lotus plant are in the soil of the pond or river bottom, while its leaves float on the top of the water surface or are held well above it. The flowers are usually found on thick stems rising several centimetres above the leaves. Researchers reported that the lotus has the remarkable ability to regulate the temperature of its flowers to within a narrow range and it is suspected that the flowers may be doing this to attract cold blooded insects.

This began a picture of a fig tree in my garden and then became an abstract for nature and human existence, both physical and spiritual.
If a seed is studied under a microscope there is no sign of life in it and yet when it is placed in the soil new life springs forth...life and death are indeed a mystery and a miracle combined.
(the seed is in a dormant state and only brings forth life when it is stimulated by germination, the endosperm has to be germinated to bring it to life. Seeds that are dormant don't have any metabolic processes going on... anything that is alive does )
A mystery because even without being over spiritual we see from nature that death is as important as life itself and it's not really death as we might think, but a new beginning.
Therefore I must conclude that in the natural order of things something has to die in order to live... life & death co-exist in a kind of perpetual motion so to speak...
How does this effect us in our daily lives?
From observing nature it can bring about meaning to show that often something must die within us (all types of things that negatively impact our lives and the lives of those around us) and then requires a form of activation and germination so that change and new life can spring forth...and that may very well be a miracle.
To some it may feel like renewal or being born again, where new vision and a new excitement and zeal for life takes place...the old is dead and the new begins.
I have found that being "born again" in the spiritual sense is not so difficult to understand and that it goes hand in hand with the very same laws I see at work in nature.
Therefore I would judge this next biblical statement to be very realistic and relative when Jesus said:
“‘I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.’
(John 3:3-7)

It is a plant native to Asia, inhabiting slow water courses or freshwater ponds, living in shallow depths. It is rooted in the muddy bottom by a vigorous rhizome, from which leave large rounded leaves, supported above the water mirror by long petioles. It produces beautiful pink or white flowers, large and with many petals. It is known for the longevity of its seeds, which can germinate after 13 centuries. It served as inspiration for the architecture of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. This lotus is grown as an ornamental plant in water gardens around the world.

These mud flats are fascinating. There were several patches of dried plants that looked almost like fuzzy tracks from some mysterious giant creature, and I think I have figured out how they were created. There are no live plants on this salty mud, but there are a few remains of dead Russian thistle (tumbleweed). My guess is tumbleweed blew across here, dispersing seeds in an explosive pattern when the weed bounced. Seeds that landed in the mud cracks germinated, but couldn't survive in the harsh environment, leaving these strange patches of dried vegetation. Leaves that fall to the ground during this time of year are extremely important for baby trees that need to stay warm during the winter.
I have 10 of these that have germinated, all grown from seeds from apples from a Jupiter apple tree in the garden. I am going to have to think what to with them - probably destined for going into hedges rather than specimen trees but I will give them a few years in pots and have them handy for when i need something for a slot.
When Ranger (pony) eventually dies (he is 37) There will be some very obvious places for hedges that are impracticable now and apples are so fascinating and pollinator friendly. Every seed grown apple tree is unique, probably useless but potentially a wonderful new discovery.

Out on a winter walk with Max, the weather in Kent this winter has been wet and warm giving rise to Teasel seeds germinating in their seed heads.....
My daughter germinated an apple pip when she was two, 22 years later this handsome tree is big and blooming in my Dad's veg garden :)

The sunflower field was sown just 6 days ago on Friday 9th May.
A few of the seeds are already peeking through in the warmest corner of the field.

Velvet Underground - Beginning To See The Light
They specialise in sound tracks to old silent horror movies. It was quite someting to watch and listen to.
From their 'MySpace Webpage':
The first seeds of Cape Town based TERMINATRYX (pronounced "terminaytrix") germinated around 2002 when lead vocalist Sonja Ruppersberg and extreme music veteran Paul Blom (of V.O.D - Voice Of Destruction, F8, and K.O.B.U.S.) took it upon themselves to create a musical project unlike any other in Cape Town and South Africa as a whole.
When it came to choosing a name, instead of a single concept, several layers were combined to include a range of movies, fetishes and mythical locations to encapsulate the specific mood. Movies like Tetsuo The Iron Man, The Terminator, The Matrix, and the Nexus replicants from Bladerunner / a strong female presence of the dominatrix / the river Styx - All of this fused to create the TERMINATRYX phenomenon.
In the early stages, around 2003, first guitarist Tom Somers left for Scotland which led to songwriter Paul taking care of all the instruments (including guitars, bass, drums, programming, keyboards and backing vocals).
The duo of Sonja and Paul is enhanced with additional personnel when it comes to live performances (Ronnie on drums and Patrick on guitar).
The first of these live performances came in 2003 when TERMINATRYX was chosen as support for German Darkwave legends Diary Of Dreams on their South African tour. The 8-song repertoire at that stage was expanded to include over an album's worth, with pre-production samplers making the rounds.
The sound also took shape to create a unique Industrial-Metal blend with female lead-, and male backing vocals, which was quite rare in Southern Africa at that time, but is becoming more commonplace.
2004 they used TERMINATRYX and F8 music in their short film, imPERFECTION.
The debut album release was always on the horizon, but time simply seemed to dissolve with Paul & Sonja's other activities including the creation of film festivals like the annual South African HORRORFEST in 2005 (for which Sonja is also the poster-girl) and the new X FEST.
In between rare live performances which included appearing at the Popkomm festival in Berlin, Germany (2006).
Each year TERMINATRYX also performs original live soundtracks to the screening of classic silent horror films at the annual South African HORRORFEST (incl. NOSFERATU, THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, HAXAN, and MACISTE IN HELL). This is done in conjunction with musical collaborators Sean and Simon (from LARK - on upright bass, flute, theremin, drums, percussion etc.), as well as Matthijs Van Dijk (on electric violin). Accumulatively this musical project is known as THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE. Other guests are also incorporated for this unique audio visual experience.
In 2007 Simon showed interest in mixing the anticipated TERMINATRYX album at his Cape Town based Sound & Motion Studios. The proposed timeframe passed and early 2008 they put their collective foot down and booked the studio for March. Paul produced (and executive produced together with Sonja) and recorded all the tracks at Flamedrop Productions. Mixing commenced with Simon at S&M early March with the album released mid-May 2008 thru ENT Entertainment, and followed with launches in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria.
Live highlights of 2008 included the Cape Town album launch (4th July) where TERMINATRYX performed at the Labia Theatre in the 200-seater cinema with a huge synced-up video projection show accompanying the entire performance. The show was followed by a pre-release screening of werewolf movie Skinwalkers - a new kind of double feature!
Within a single week in August, TERMINATRYX performed as support for two international acts visiting South Africa independently - incl. Sheep On Drugs (16 Aug) and VNV Nation (22 Aug).
Halloween 2008 also saw the release of the TERMINATRYX / NOSFERATU DVD, featuring music videos, live clips, photo galleries, their short film imPERFECTION, and the classic 1922 silent vampire film NOSFERATU with the new TERMINATRYX soundtrack (as performed live to the film's screening at the 2006 South African HORRORFEST Film Festival, together with special guests).
In 2009 Paul & Sonja created and compiled the KOPSKOOT! album (translated: "headshot!") - the first ever collection of strictly heavy Afrikaans music from Metal and Rock to Industrial, Electronic and everythign inbetween.
Mid-2009 TERMINATRYX embarked on the remixing of the debut album, calling in remixers like Industriezone (Austria), Sheep On Drugs (UK) and South Africans like Battery 9, Axxon, NuL, Jekyll & Hyde, iRONic, Francois Blom (V.O.D / K.O.B.U.S.), Theo Crous (Springbok Nude Girls / K.O.B.U.S.), and others. It is aimed for an early-2010 release.
With a natural aversion to cheap commercial sentiments and a blind consumer society, TERMINATRYX is truly a unique South African audio adventure, looking at the world with a satirical eye as they take the listener through a juxtaposed range of sonic intensity and calm, fusing technology with the organic in a David Cronenberg vs. H.R Giger trip.
In a televised talent show, and mock reality drenched commercial media decline, TERMINATRYX is not merely a breath of fresh air, but a long awaited new direction out to rattle the cage just enough to make a saturated public stand still and think, "hey, there's more to it than this..." - even if for only a moment.
But as we know, a moment can be a multitude of infinities - depending on the way you look at it.
