The Speicherstadt in Hamburg, Germany, is the largest warehouse district in the world where the buildings stand on timber-pile foundations, oak logs, in this particular case. It is located in the port of Hamburg -within the HafenCity quarter- and was built from 1883 to 1927.

Steam locomotives were first developed in Great Britain during the early 19th century and dominated railway transport until the middle of the 20th century. From the early 1900s they were gradually superseded by electric and diesel locomotives, with full conversions to electric and diesel power beginning from the 1930s.

I have been taking photos of the yellowjackets to document when cold temperatures finally cause them to hole up for the winter. I took this photo when it was 42F but early morning temperature was 35F. IMG_0161
