Years after my step-grandfather Jerry Southwick died, I found a bunch of his old Navy pictures in a box. They are really cool, and frankly a bit homoerotic. This is him, 1933.

Gerald Lawrence Southwick - Born June 6, 1911 - Died June 18, 1992

British postcard in the Hepworth Picture Player series.

Gerald Ames (1880-1933) was a British actor, film director and Olympic fencer. In the post-First World War cinema, he was a popular leading man in the silent British cinema. Between 1914 and 1928. Ames appeared in more than seventy films.

Percy Gerald Ames was born in Blackheath, London in 1880. He was educated at Freiburg University in Germany. He first took up acting in 1905. Athletic, tall (183 cm), moustached, dark-eyed and dark-haired, he was a heartbreaker. Ames was also a fencing champion. He competed in the individual épée event at the 1912 Summer Olympics. His film debut was a supporting part in the Gaumont British production She Stoops to Conquer (George Loane Tucker, 1914), starring Henry Ainley. Ames became a popular leading man in the post-First World War cinema with his role as gentleman thief Arsene Lupin in the crime drama Arsene Lupin (George Loane Tucker, 1916). Guy Bellinger at IMDb: "Ames had all it took to get top billing and he did grace about seventy films (many of which directed by pioneers George Loane Tucker and Cecil M. Hepworth) with his manly presence. He very successfully portrayed three archetypal fiction characters, Rupert Von Hetzau, Arsène Lupin and Raffles. And he most often found himself in the shoes of figures of imposing bearing such as aristocrats (knights, counts, marquises, princes...), officers (lieutenants, captains...), judges, ambassadors, the like..."

Gerald Ames starred in such dramas as A Fortune at Stake (Walter West, 1918), also starring Violet Hopson, Comradeship (Maurice Elvey, 1919) with Lily Elsie, and Anna the Adventuress (Cecil M. Hepworth, 1920) starring Alma Taylor. During the 1920s Gerald Ames appeared in such British films as the crime film Mr. Justice Raffles (Gaston Quiribet, 1921), The Woman Who Obeyed (Sidney Morgan, 1923) with Hilda Bayley and Stewart Rome, and the historical drama A Royal Divorce (Alexander Butler, 1926) starring Gwylim Evans as Napoleon, Gertrude McCoy as his wife Josephine, and Lillian Hall-Davis. He also directed himself in a number of films. In France, he appeared credited as Gérald Amès in the French-Austrian production La maison dans la forêt (Jean Legrand, 1922) with Constance Worth and Jean Angelo. He retired from the screen in 1928 after 72 silent films. He was also a regular stage actor who took on many leading roles in the theatre. Gerald Ames died in 1933 after falling down the steps of Knightsbridge tube station and suffering a heart attack. He was married to the actress Mary Dibley. He was only 51.

Created by Marion Mahony Griffin in 1907. She worked for Frank Lloyd Wright but was an accomplished architect in her own right.

He's pesky, but he's cute. I didn't use the zoom for this one - just stuck the camera in his face - he lets me that close.

more here about the Biennale in Venice :

Ralph Rugoff has declared: «May You Live in Interesting Times will no doubt include artworks that reflect upon precarious aspects of existence today, including different threats to key traditions, institutions and relationships of the “post-war order.” But let us acknowledge at the outset that art does not exercise its forces in the domain of politics. Art cannot stem the rise of nationalist movements and authoritarian governments in different parts of the world, for instance, nor can it alleviate the tragic fate of displaced peoples across the globe (whose numbers now represent almost one percent of the world’s entire population).»

Here's my finished FOOMI and hat, renamed Gerald and Piers. If you look close, you can see I flipped his head around and cut him a new head mount :-)

Processed with MOLDIV

Out with my friend having lunch. Pic was taken about 2 years ago, before I ever though about getting a Cowboy hat.

13/01/1881, Deradd, Streete, Co. Westmeath.

Parents, James & Bridget (nee Marron) Griffin.

09/05/1960, “Glenburn”, Station Road , Sutton, Co. Dublin.

Buried, St Fintan’s Cemetery, Sutton.

In the 1915 he is a boarder in a house in Harwicke Street and we have no further address for him till he is married in late 1916. At the time of the rising he was a delivery clerk for Henshaws Wholesale Merchants, Christchurch Place, Dublin.

Gerald was not captured, but there was a warrant out for his arrest that was never acted upon.

Commanding officer: Commandant Edward Daly.

Garrison site: Four Courts, but also Cabra Bridge and the GPO with Piaras Beaslai to meet with James Connolly to report on the situation at the Four Courts.

His father worked for the Midland Great Western Railway as station master at Liffey Junction station. Gerald attended the Christian Brothers secondary school at North Richmond St. , now O’Connell’s.

He followed his father into the railway in March 1898 and worked his way up to senior clerk in the parcels office at the Broadstone Station. He was a member of the Gaelic League and as a circle member of the IRB he was instrumental in setting up the volunteers in November 1913. When the 1st Battalion was formed, Edward Daly was appointed Commandant, Piaras Beaslai was Vice-Commandant, James O’Sullivan Adjutant and Gerald Griffin was appointed as Quartermaster.

In 1915, following the death of O’Donovan Rossa, the volunteers set about organising the funeral and Gerald was (according to his pension application) Captain of the Guard of honour. Because of his railway connections he is listed as organising the trains which were used to bring in mourners from all parts of the country.

On the 7th May 1915 he resigned his job in the railway as they wanted to send him down the country and away from the volunteers. Gerald then got a clerical position in the British Army Audit Office in Dublin Castle. As he was ”a known volunteer and German sympathiser” (DMP files) and was under surveillance he left or was encouraged to leave his position in December 1915. He then worked for Thomas Henshaws, wholesale merchants till October 1918.

Following the rising he used Henshaw’s vans for moving munitions around the city and the premises in College Street was used as an address for correspondence for Michael Collins.

On the 10 October 1916 he married Florence ( Flossie) Meade, Cumann na mBan, who along with her three brothers William, Walter and Henry Meade, fought in the Four Courts area.

They had three daughters, Bridget, Margaret and Mary and lived in 112 Cabra Park, Phibsboro before moving to Sutton in 1932.

Gerald also worked as Secretary and Treasurer for the Irish Clerical & Allied Workers Union from Oct 1919 to March 1922.

The Irish Railway Clearing House March 1922 to May 1926

Dublin Corporation, Engineers Department, North Lotts Drainage and Liffey Tunnel, New Ireland Assurance Company, Dawson Street, till he retired.

Gerald Ford was the United States 38th President and 40th Vice President. He was also a minority leader in the House of Represntatives, served in the Navy during WWIi, and was a standout football player at the University of Michigan.

Ford would attend the University of Michigan on a football scholorship. He was a standout in high school and would shine in college. For 3 years, he served as captain of the team and was their star linebacker. He would help the Michigan Wolverines win back to back National Championships in 1932 and 1933. He would receive All American honors but turn down contracts from the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers NFL teams to attend Yale Law School.

After graduating from Yale and passing the Michigan State Bar Exam, Ford opened a law practice in Grand Rapid in 1941. Shortly after that, the attacks on Pearl Harbor took place and Ford enlisted in the Navy during WWII. Ford started as an ensign but worked his way up as a Lieutenant in the Navy. He would serve on the USS Moterey and would serve in the Pacific Theater. Here, he would attack New Guinea and most of the Indies but was never attacked by Japanese forces.

After WWII, Ford would return back to Grand Rapids where he would join politics. Ford would win a seat on the US House of Represenatives from the state of Michigan. Ford would serve 25 years in the US House where he was known for his modesty. His main highlight was being part of the Warren Commision which was incharge of the JFK assassination. Ford was the one responsible for putting together a biography of accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald.

On Oct 10, 1973, Vice Pesident Spiro Agnew resigned from office because of a case of tax evasion he was facing. Speaker of the House Carl Albert nominated Ford to become the new Vice President of the United States. After 2 months of debating, the US Senate voted 92-3 and the US House voted 387-35 in favor of Ford. On Dec 6, 1973, Ford was announced the 40th Vice President of the United States.

During a short tenure as Vice President, Ford never got to accomplish anything because of the Watergate Scandel going around and the corruption in the Nixon White House Cabinet. On August 9, 1974, just 8 months after take the oath of Vice President, Nixon resigned from the Presidency. That same night, Ford took his oath of office to become the United States 38th President. He is the only President to never have been elected to the Vice Presidency and Presidency.

During Fords administration, Ford encountered many angry situations. One of his first moves was to Pardon Nixon for his activity in the Watergate Scandel. This made many citizens mad and even White House officials that would resign because they didnt wanna work with Ford. He was also faceing the biggest recession since the Great Depression and the Vietnam War. Ford, however, did cut taxes in hopes that extra money would force people to put back into the economy. He also signed a treaty with South and North Vietnam putting an end to the war.

In 1976, Ford would lose the Presidential Election to Jimmy Carter. He would return to Grand Rapids where he would spend the last 30 years of his life making guest appearances at many historical events. Ford past away in 2006 and is entombed here in a crypt next to the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Mi.

These are from the 2nd photoshoot I did with Gerald.
