Like me, my Paddington Bear likes Christmas. He has a very generous spirit and likes giving gifts and writing cards to those whom he loves. He also loves Christmas decorations, so he and I decorate the tree: he the lower branches and me the upper ones that he can't reach with his paws.

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his Macintosh is made of the same felt. Although you can't see them, he wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his Macintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Paddington (Paddy), is making his debut on flickr today, and he would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

Actively drilling petroleum well in Licking County, Ohio, USA. (October 2016) (site access generously provided by Gary Sitler for geoscience education purposes)

During the late 1800s, Ohio was the # 1 petroleum exporter on Earth. This is definitely not the case anymore! Despite this, Ohio today still has economic concentrations of oil and natural gas.

Ohio has three significant petroleum occurrences:

1) Trenton Limestone (upper Middle Ordovician) of northwestern Ohio.

2) Clinton Sandstone (Lower Silurian) of eastern Ohio.

3) Knox Group (Beekmantown Dolomite-Rose Run Sandstone-Copper Ridge/Trempealeau Dolomite) (Upper Cambrian to ?lowermost Ordovician) in the eastern ~half of Ohio.

Of these three petroleum systems, the Knox Group generally requires the deepest drilling. Most Knox Group drilling in Ohio targets the Rose Run Sandstone, an interbedded quartzose sandstone-dolostone unit of Late Cambrian age.

The well shown above is being actively drilled (as of late October 2016). It was targeting a paleotopographic high at the Knox Unconformity and hoping to encounter petroleum in porous dolostone. During this visit, the rig was drilling at a depth between 3,300 and 3,400 feet below the surface.

Update: as of spring 2017, this well was making 100 to 125 MCF a day (= 100 to 125 thousand cubic feet of natural gas) and 10 barrels of oil per day. The producing horizon is in the Upper Cambrian Copper Ridge Dolomite (also known as the Trempealeau Dolomite). Petroleum is coming from porous dolostones below the Knox Unconformity. The Knox is a megasequence boundary (Sloss sequence boundary) that separates the Sauk Megasequence below from the Tippecanoe Megasequence above.

The following are formation picks for this well (the numbers are from the completion record filed with the Ohio Division of Natural Resources, Division of Oil and Gas Resources):

430 feet depth = top of the Berea Sandstone (lowermost Devonian)

1182 feet depth = top of the "Big Lime" (= Devonian and Silurian carbonate succession, including the Delaware Limestone, Columbus Limestone, and Silurian dolostones)

1940 feet depth = top of the "Packer Shell" (= Middle Silurian Dayton Formation equivalent)

3252 feet depth = Trenton Limestone (upper Middle Ordovician, sensu traditio; lower Upper Ordovician, sensu novo)

3790 feet depth = Gull River Limestone (Middle Ordovician)

3830 feet depth = Knox Unconformity with Trempealeau Dolomite below (Upper Cambrian)

According to State of Ohio records, this well has produced the following:

2017 - 38 barrels of oil, 12,660 MCF of natural gas (= thousands of cubic feet of natural gas), 516 barrels of brine (= salt water)

2018 - 59 barrels of oil, 2828 MCF of natural gas, 175 barrels of brine

2019 - 144 MCF of natural gas

2020 - 21 MCF of natural gas, 130 barrels of brine

2021 - no production

“Mrs. Nock, of Port Adelaide, came forward with a generous offer to present a very suitable site at . . . Glanville, as a gift. Messrs. D. & J. Williams, land agents, then consented to forego the usual fees for the transfer of the property: and Mr. J. H. Hollingworth, architect, promised to prepare the plans and to superintend the erection of the building without any charge.” [Register 26 Mar 1896]

“The dedication of St. Nicholas's Mission Church, Glanville, took place in the presence of a large congregation on Monday evening, the Bishop of Adelaide officiating. The building . . . has been erected in memory of the late Mr. Charles Trafford Smith, who died in February last. . . The structure is of iron, variations of weatherboard giving a pleasing effect. . . the Bishop . . . said St. Nicholas Mission Church completed the circle of mission churches which were to be the outposts and therefore the inner strength of the mother church (St Paul’s, Port).” [Advertiser 2 Dec 1896]

“SMITH.—On the 22nd February, [died] at his residence, Penny street, Exeter, Semaphore, Charles Trafford Smith, aged 35 years.” [Advertiser 24 Feb 1896]

“Obituary. Mr. Charles Trafford Smith, of the firm of Messrs. Smith, Channon, & Co., customs, shipping, insurance, and commission agents, at Port Adelaide, died at his residence, Penny street, Exeter, early on Saturday morning after a brief illness. . . Mr. Smith was a prominent member of the Church of England. For some years he was minister's warden under Canon Green and the Rev. F. W. Samwell, the present rector of St. Paul's, Port Adelaide.” [Chronicle 29 Feb 1896]

GLANVILLE BIBLE CHRISTIAN CHAPEL

Foundation stone 31 Aug 1878 by Chief Justice S J Way, architect Daniel Garlick, opened 6 Jan 1879, Methodist after Union 1900, Uniting 1977, closed, demolished 1984.

“the contract for the erection of a Bible Christian Chapel at Glanville has been let. . . The Rev. R. Kelly will reside at Glanville, and will open Divine Service in his own house, Carlisle-street, near the proposed hew chapel, on the last Sunday in the present month. Services will be held regularly every Sunday at the same place until the new chapel is completed.” [Express & Telegraph 4 Jul 1878]

“the Chief Justice . . . in addressing the assembly apologized for his late arrival. He had come down by the train in time, but Glanville had grown so large that in finding his destination he had wandered up and down wrong streets. (Laughter). Although he had so little local acquaintance, yet 25 years ago he had walked from the beach over that spot to the Port. At that time, he believed, the neighbourhood was covered with the honeysuckle tree, but at all events it presented a different appearance to what it did that day. [Evening Journal 2 Sep 1878]

“The site is in Carlisle-street south of Hart-street, from which thoroughfare the structure is visible as a prominent object. The edifice is built with Dry Creek stone with cement dressings; is Gothic in style, lofty in appearance, and withal neat. The dimensions are 45 by 35 feet. The interior furnishings are kauri and huon pine sittings for 200 persons. . . The land is sufficiently large for the erection of an adjoining school or lecture rooms, it being 51 x 127 feet. The building is surmounted by a bell turret, and lighted by deep narrow Gothic windows upon all sides.” [Christian Colonist 10 Jan 1879]

“The jubilee services of the Glanville Methodist Mission . . . invited Mrs. R. Thompson, who has been a member for over 46 years, to unveil the Memorial Window, provided for ‘Former Workers’, and Mr. A. H. Admore, as representing the returned soldiers present, to unveil one in honour of those men who enlisted at Duty's call and proceeded overseas in the cause of ‘Truth and Right’. These two windows are a very fine tribute to the glazier's art, and taken in conjunction with the new leadlights in place of the original windows greatly enhance the beauty of the church.” [Australian Christian Commonwealth 21 Sep 1828]

Research would be difficult to carry out without the people who agree to participate. Here we see the immeasurable generosity of people who support research by participating. After allowing samples to be taken from their livestock, the villagers kindly offered a meal to two researchers.

The staff at the restaurant, 1051GWR, closed by the pandemic, decided to use their skills to cater for the elderly, vulnerable, NHS and keyworkers, providing 800 free meals a day.

The restaurant was able to reopen for business during the summer. The restaurateur, David Maguire, was subsequently awarded an MBE for his work during the chaotic early days of lockdown. Immediately after the announcement of his award the business had to close its doors again as a result of the resurgence of the pandemic.

The building was designed by Sir John James Burnet as Kelvinside Railway Station, 1896, to blend in with the nearby grand villas along Great Western Road.

Goal: message series title art

Audience: general church audience

Direction: multi-week series teaching about (surprise) giving, etc. Not much specific direction other than that.

Finally gave in and had a baby shower. It was, in fact, such a sweet moment! The group of people gathered made the whole difference!

Students like you made this statue possible. The Runner Statue was made possible by the USF class of 1986, who raised over $8000 as part of their Senior Class Gift.

Leona and Dominic Tarantino Plaza

This plaza is named for Leona and Dom’54 Tarantino, alumni and trustee emeriti. Their generosity helped to make this space possible.

Koret Health and Recreation Center

Without the support of the Koret Foundation, USF would not have this Garden Courtyard, the Koret Gym, or the Koret Law Center. Without their generosity, many spaces at USF would not be possible.

One favorite bit the Morton Arboretum has added to the Illuminations trail in recent years is a wheat field made of lights. I got better pictures of this in the past, but they moved the wheat so that Generosity the Vivid Deer would rise over top of it, so I only caught the field's edge. I got a wider view that showed more of the field of gold that would have been a better shot, except the focus was off.

I am hit-and-miss in my attempts to photograph Illuminations. That's another reason I skipped the pictures the last couple of years. I'll probably skip them again next year.

To mark the end of crew operations (driver and conductor) at Catford garage, the powers that be very generously let this RM and preserved RT1702 out on a variety of routes for the final few days. RM2046 and RT1702 were both used in service on Route 75 (9th), 47 (10th), 185 (11th), 54 (12th) and the 36B on the 13th March - the final day of crew operations.

RM2046 (ALM 46B) is seen here on Titan operated Route 47 somewhere en route. The photographer was making a leap for a quick photo before re-boarding!

As an aside, Catford garage (TL) was one of the original garages operated by Thomas Tilling:

TL - Tilling Lewisham, TC - Tilling Croydon, TB - Tilling Bromley survived into London Transport days.

Catford garage was opened on 11th May 1914 and was not very old when requisitioned for the war effort. It did not re-open until 1920 when Thomas Tilling's Lewisham operation moved there due to space constraints at his other garage.

Thomas Tilling gained an agreement in 1923 to double the size of Catford and in addition the roof has been raised twice, first in 1930 to enable double deck buses to use the garage and again in 1948 to accommodate AEC Regent III RTs. The garage was modernised again in 1970.

This image, from her music video 'Generous' (2017), shows the then 20-year-old blonde American actress and singer Olivia Holt in a most flattering hotel chambermaid costume. She is wearing a short, frilly white apron over a black, short-sleeve minidress with white collar and cuffs. She is also wearing a frilly, white cap with black trim and black, stiletto-heel shoes. This outfit shows off her lovely legs to great effect! In this image, she is reclining on the floor of a hotel room with a tray bearing food and a glass of wine(?) in front of her. With her left hand she is pouring maple syrup(?) on to the pancakes on her plate. She has evidently availed herself of room service! The video can be watched at, for example:
