Gaza Barracks near Tonbridge was one of many barracks constructed in 1938 as the threat of war was imminent. As was often the case, Royal Engineers constructed the infrastructure, with a local contractor completing the erection of buildings; a cheap and quick timber clad frame with corrugated asbestos sheet roof, typical of the era. With large workshops and accommodation for up to 10 Officers and nearly 200 other ranks, the barracks was home to transport units, latterly accommodating personnel from search light batteries stations locally. After the war, the War Department retained the barracks as a depot for equipment due to be disposed of following the war. It was sold in 1960 and has remained in private hands since.

The original buildings remain in apparently great condition. Some have been demolished through mixture of poor condition and Council insistence (the owners can only build a new building if they demolish an old one).

The site does remain in private hands and there are tenant business occupying most of the units. This was a permission visit and tour with the owner, who appears happy to show people with a legitimate interest around this unique site.

Acetylene generator. This was high tech when it was installed in the basement of this old farmhouse about 113 years ago. Used to generate gas which was piped all over the house for gas lighting. Guess they had to be mighty careful so as not to turn the house into a super nova.

This wagon accompanies the Wasp personnel carrier. It transports the tools and if necessary a generator set to power Kango hammers, etc. It is in the works for a new deck and general refurbishment.

The sun sets on west central Iowa as a trio of wind generators continue to generate renewable electricity for what is becoming a new "green" power grid across the United States. Iowa is the third largest wind power generating state in the nation.

In the Kyiv, the Ukrainian Red Cross Society handed over 35 generators to Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian railway company) for uninterrupted operation of the country's railway stations in conditions of full-scale war.

Many of these old generators were out on the street, very noisy and giving off smoke. I'm assuming that the craftsman here must recreate and take care of them, but I'm not quite sure what they're for.

Franklin electrostatic generator.

Ben Franklin (1746-52 ) flew kites to demonstrate that lightning is a form of static electricity (ESD). He would run a wire to the kite and produce sparks at the ground, or charge a Leyden jar. This led Franklin to invent the lightning rod. Franklin also made several electrostatic generators with rotating glass balls to experiment with. These experiments led him to formulate the single fluid (imponderable fluid) theory of electricity. Previous theories had held there were two electrical fluids and two magnetic fluids. Franklin theorized just one imponderable electrical fluid (a fluid under conservation) in the universe. The difference in electrical charges was explained by an excess ( + ) or defect ( - ) of the single electrical fluid. This is where the positive ( + ) and negative ( - ) symbols come from in electrical science.
