Amazon.com exclusive Unicron Generations arrives to replace my Armada Unicron. A lot more accurate to the 1986 movie character.
The graphic gives a general illustration of a waste generation & management scheme. Using car production as a example, the associated text includes references as follows: Raw Materials: Mining of minerals: copper, iron, lead, zinc, and aluminum (generating waste in the neighborhood of the mines), etc. Production: During the final assembly: paints, coatings, lubricants and fluids (generating excess materials – a specific type of waste) Distribution: Assembled cars are transported to dealerships (generating air emissions). Factories, assembly plants, road systems, etc. require land to be cleared, resulting in deforestation, degradation of habitat for wildlife and an increase in rainwater runoff. Consumption: Maintenance and repair of cars generates a large range of hazardous waste: fuel, oil, lubricants, etc. and other products such as acids and chemicals. Recycling or disposal: 3/4 of a car is in theory recyclable, but far less is actually reclaimed. Cars are either partly recycled or simply disposed of (waste consuming large areas). The steel, iron, and aluminum rate highest in reuse. Plastics, which are increasingly used in cars, pose numerous problems for recycling because of the great variety of plastic formulations and the lack of an economically feasible processing program.

there was a discussion this morning at work that arose from my manager not being able to mail christmas cards out to those of us under 40 (and myself) who didn't list our home mailing addresses in the staff directory.
the conversation touched on various topics from information access to privacy to challenging 20th century conventions.
most of the non-snail-mail subset didn't have a landline. There was a clear line drawn in the sand between people who felt it was ok to just check their messages when they got home, and those who felt disabled if they didn't have access to their cellphone.
I consider myself an early adopter (i.e. gadget freak), about 2 years w/o a landline and just recently terminated my Internet service provider (clearwire sucked) to use my phone as my broadband modem.

Holden's 1968 models, released in January of that year, were promoted as the 'New Generation' acknowledging the expansive new styling, broader model range and a long list of optional features. Kingswood was adorned with a blacked out grille with chrome highlights (pictured) while Belmont was silver only. Premier featured quad headlights, a first for a local car. The trio was joined by Monaro and Brougham in July 1968.
