NYC Pride March

47 years after the Stonewall Riots of June 28, 1969

The 47th NYC Pride March started at noon on June 26, at 5th Avenue and 36th Street in Manhattan. The route proceeded through Midtown down 5th Avenue, before heading west into Greenwich Village, ending at Christopher and Greenwich Streets.

Heritage of Pride, Inc. (HOP / NYC Pride) is a non-profit organization that plans and produces New York City's official LGBT ( Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Pride events each year.

Heritage of Pride hosts New York City’s Pride events in commemoration of the Stonewall Riots of 1969.

Stonewall riots happened 47 years ago in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.

The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the LGBT community against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. They are widely considered to constitute the single most important event leading to the LGBT liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT equal rights in the United States.

The 2016 Pride March happened on the one-year anniversary of the Obergefell v. Hodges decision, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

The 2016 march also happened to come just days after Stonewall Inn, the famous gay bar located in Greenwich Village, was designated as the first national LGBT monument in the U.S.

On Monday, June 27th 2016 the Stonewall National Monument (U.S. National Park Service) designation took place in New York City. The monument sits across the street from The Stonewall Inn, a National Historic Landmark known for its involvement in the beginning of the modern struggle for civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) Americans.

Remarks from - President Barack Obama June 2016

"I’m designating the Stonewall National Monument as the newest addition to America’s national parks system. Stonewall will be our first national monument to tell the story of the struggle for LGBT rights. I believe our national parks should reflect the full story of our country – the richness and diversity and uniquely American spirit that has always defined us. That we are stronger together. That out of many, we are one."

Hillary Clinton made an unannounced appearance and was joined by New York State Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Rev. Al Sharpton

NYC Pride 2016 theme, "Equality Needs You"

NYC Pride 2016 three Grand Marshals

Jazz Jennings - 15-year-old honorary co-founder of the Transkids Purple Rainbow Foundation and the youngest Grand Marshal in NYC Pride history

Subhi Nahas - Syrian refugee who co-founded the first LGBT magazine in Syria, Mawaleh.

Cecilia Chung - civil rights leader and activist for LGBT rights

NYC Pride March Director 2016 - Julian Sanjivan

According to organizers, around 30,000 people marched in the parade itself. Law enforcement officials expected that there would be around 2.5 million attendees in total, and that more or less comports with CBS News' reporting, which found that almost 2 million spectators joined the marchers.

NYC Pride is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that manages and produces New York City's official LGBT Pride celebrations each year in June

Times Square New York City USA

May 10, 2023, Danvers, MA.

May 10, 2023. Danvers, MA.

More than 350 people turned out to support a free drag makeup event for teens at the Peabody Institute Library of Danvers Wednesday evening. They chanted outside the library and used Pride flags and signs to block a handful of protesters who opposed the event. About 10 protesters holding signs like “Make America Great Again: Vote Republican,” “Straight Pride” and others that implied drag performers groom children or are inappropriate for minors stood outside the library ahead of Wednesday’s event. Supporters of the event thanked the library for hosting spaces like this for Queer children during a Library Board of Trustees meeting held later Wednesday evening.

Al Sharpton

The Koothandavar Festival of Koovagam, Tamil Nadu, must count among the most bizarre rituals observed in India. Hundreds of transgenders gather here for 18 days in April-May to observe the festival, which has roots in a legend from the Mahabharata. This is the largest gathering of transgenders in the world.

For most of the year, Koovagam is a sleepy village but during the festival, which culminates on Chitra Pournami, it becomes a magnet for transgenders from across the country.

Diverse City Theater Company (DCT) presents "FOUR PLAYS" for the company's Equality Playwrights Festival ("EPF") season from August 11th to August 26th 2006 at Theatre Row's Clurman Theatre in New York City. The Equality Playwrights Festival is the recipient of Disney Foundation's Cast Community Fund Award.

"FOUR PLAYS: The Equality Playwrights Festival" is a presentation of commissioned one-act plays on gender identity:

Robert Askins' absurdist CLEAN LIVING, directed by Steven Ditmyer: Set in an Army barracks, two men Norm and Al try to uncover George's sexuality but Clever George will not tell, and Norm and Al can't ask.

Starring: Stephen Buck, Christopher Kromer, David Newer, and Adam Schneider

Joe Byers' VEILS, directed by Gregory Simmons, explores an American soldier's experience in a war-torn Middle-Eastern country and his first sexual encounter with a local woman.

Starring: Randy Falcon & Natasha Marco

Stuart Harris' ONNA FIELD, directed by Carlos Armesto, is about a top student and resident artist at Sidehill Boys School in West Omaha whose F in gym and concerned gym coach threaten to prevent him from being admitted to a high-ranking design school in Chicago.

Starring: Michael Early & Victor Lirio

Jorshinelle Taleon-Sonza's COLD FLESH, directed by Adam Fitzgerald, follows a newly-emigrated Filipino woman investigating significant people in her late husband's life in America to reconstruct the man she knew versus the man he has supposedly become.

Starring: Liz Casasola, Christopher Kromer, Victor Lirio, and David Newer.

All four plays were commissioned by DCT as part of its annual mission to develop plays that revolve around one diversity issue of cultural significance. Launched in December 2005, this season's festival focus is on "gender identity issues of the 21st century."

In describing what the festival offers to today's theater audiences, Maxine Kern, DCT's Festival Director, commented: "Four plays, four voices, envisioning the drama of gender identity in our lives. While the process has been collaborative the plays present widely different and exciting parables for our time."

Producer: Linda Faigao-Hall; Festival Curator: Maxine Kern; Associate Producer: Debra Derr; Set Design: Brian Ireland; Lighting Design: Ryan Mueller; Sound Design: Betsy Rhodes; Costume Design: Rahnel Romasanta; Technical Director: Aron Deyo; Production Stage Manager: Chandra LaViolette.
