5-light stained glass window. Reticulated tracery (14th century).
The Gelder Memorial Window situated above the South Porch, was erected by a bequest from Sir William Alfred Gelder, Sheriff and Mayor of Hull, in the memory of his wife, Elizabeth, Lady Gelder (d 22 Jan 1934). Harry J. Stammers of York both designed and executed the window; dedicated by the Bishop of Hull 20th July 1952. The erection of the window was the fulfilment of a bequest by which Sir Alfred Gelder paid tribute to his wife’s unostentatious but deep concern for the welfare of her fellow citizens.
158/227: Discussions May 24 1947 on the execution of the Gelder window so far. In 1945 Canon Boreham had written to C Webb. ‘To place on white glass a silhouette figure or figures to let in as much light as possible. An idea of Edward l. Central figures could occupy the 3 middle lights’. These were all tentative thoughts. There was hope that the daughter would leave more money. Hardman’s were approached in 1945 but Hardman work was considered second rate. Rejection letter to Hardman’s June 1945. Better not to have figures of the Gelders. The original design was to have the Virgin Mary. 1946: Donald B Taunton of Shenley Hill, Radlett was looking for a commission on behalf of Hardman. Described as ‘Jewelled Prettiness’. Powells of Whitefriars considered a safe option. Christopher C Webb had been chosen to execute the window. A letter from his studio: Orchard House Studio, Holywell Hill, St Alban’s stated that the supply of glass and lead was difficult. He was turned down. Will of Alfred Gelder (11November 1941) deceased: £500 to be used within 3 years of my will. He had attended HT on almost all Lord Mayor Sundays for 40 years. To be a scene from the Life of Christ. Nearly opposite the corporation pews. Reply to executors from vicar re effect of the war.
Sir William Alfred Gelder planned major street improvements in the city and the window depicts some aspects of the early history of Hull according to records available.
Designed by Mr H J Stammers of York. Artist’s description of it:”It depicts some aspects of the early history of Hull according to the records available. The upper part of the centre light shows King Edward I holding the charter of agreement with the Abbot of Meaux (Roger de Driffield), who is represented to the right of the King and holding a similar scroll of his side of the agreement of exchange, i.e. the lands upon which Hll is now built for land in Lincoln and other parts in1293. An exradct from the Royal Charter to Kingston is placed in the base of the centre light. The figure on the left of the King is William de la Pole. He was a great benefactor to the City being its first Mayor. Bricks from his brickyard were used extensively in the construction of the new buildings and walls of the City.
The smaller groups represent- extreme left no 1 light: the jury for building Holy Trinity Church in 1303. John (or William) Scales served on the jury and was buried in the new church. Sir Robert Hastings, warden 1309, promoted and encouraged the paving of the streets. Top of no 5 light: Sir Gilfrid de Hotham-‘a devout knight who founded a friary to St Augustine for Black Friars- the friary was ornamented with curious gardens and various delightful fountains’. Lights 4 & 5: the group is the jury of 12 citizens for the making of roadways etc in 1303. The arms in the centre light are those of Edward I, the Abbey of Meaux and in the centre base those of the City of Hull. The arms in no 2 light are of Sir William de la Pole.
1940: Valuable vestry glass had been removed and placed in crypt.
11 Nov 1941: From solicitor Lowson & Co. Pecuniary legacy by late Sir William Alfred Gelder-a sum of £500 for insertion within 3 years in memory of his late wife who was christened by Vicar Brumby- in window nearly opposite pews of Hull Corporation- on south side of church- legacy will lapse if not completed within 3 years.
12 Nov 1941: Letter from Canon Boreham: cannot guarantee the work within 3 years due to War.
13 Nov 1941: Letter back from solicitors: not possible to change the terms of the will.
6 Jan 1942: Extension granted.
27 Feb 1945: Letter from Canon Boreham (vicarage tel no 8603). He had made a request for £500 for south porch window but this was inadequate to provide a full window. Suggestion of a small window or an outline figure with a floral or other suitable canopy.
10 March 1945: Boreham pleased that Hardman’s might be able to do something.
24 May 1945: Rejection of the kneeling figures of Lady and Sir Arthur Gelder.
15 June 1945: To designer Donald Taunton. PCC and Boreham’s uncertainty - amending the original ideas.
1951: Faculty for Gelder window
Dame Elizabeth Gelder (nee Parker) of West Parade House, West Parade, Anlaby Road, died 22 January 1934. Sir William Gelder died 26 August 1941 aged 86.
