We went up to the West End to buy Caroline's birthday present. I had promised her a pair of Kurt Geigers. I wanted to enjoy the luxury of selecting any pair in that beautiful shoe shop. But... I found there was a sale on... usually a good thing but in this case as selection was the name of the game, it felt like a bad thing. However we were able to buy 2 pairs and had to head from Covent Garden to Regent Street to find a pair she had set her heart upon. The computer said they had one pair in stock in the size. Mirculously after a 20 minute speed walk, we found them. I love this pair in red, very chic and well made. The other pair is a different design in black.

Geiger, Atalante, Göteborg 8 mars -19,

Whilst looking around for something in the chem stock room where I work I opened a drawer and saw this antique Geiger counter. Before I ran back to my class I snapped a few pictures - it is just so 1960s cold war - it could be a prop in a space movie. But best of all it is called the "Victoreen Cutie Pie". There is something so delusional - when you go out to survey the nuclear holocaust wasteland you will have your Cutie Pie at your side. Last time it was calibrated was 1969. Great prop for Weird Al's "Christmas at Ground Zero".

field-type Geiger counters. there are a number of different types of portable Geiger counters. The prospector should consult manufacturers' catalogs before selecting a particular model, in order to find the counter that will best suit his individual needs.

Weird stuff I get to work on at my McJob. Want some fries with those isotopes?

Passed down to me from my grandfather. I wonder if they still work.

Scintillation probe with double scintillator to give sensitivity to alpha, beta, and gamma radiation.

(Advatages of a scintillator probe include that they can be orders of magnitude more sensitive than a geiger probe (though this one is about double for gamma), and because the pulse height correlates to the energy of the detected particle or photon, they can be used for spectrographic fingerprinting of isotopes).

Scint probes are great DIY projects because they involve a bit of everything - electronics, high voltage, optics, chemisty, craftsmanship, etc.

1961 Algonquin Geiger Counter

Invented by Mr. Walter Woytowich, Deep River, ON

This Geiger Counter was given by Mr. Woytowich to Miss. Noulty to show the inside of the counters. This model obviously has more wear and tear.

Seven-tenths of a mile east of this marker was Geiger's Station, the largest station on the Geiger grade toll Road, the main thoroughfare between the Comstock Lode and the ranches of the Truckee Meadows. Located at the site were a toll house, three blacksmith shops, three barns, several corrals and an inn, Magnolia House.

During the boom years of the Comstock Lode, the sixties and the seventies, the station was crowded with freight outfits, stagecoaches and weary teamsters. Passing travelers could stop off at the inn for a drink or a quick meal.

Following the extension of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad to Reno in August 1872, the toll road fell into disuse and a few years later became a public highway. Magnolia House continued operating until 1915. Social activity at the inn included dances which attracted residents from Virginia City, nearby valleys, and the Truckee Meadows.

Nick checks a mat for U238. The red bowl on the right is "fiesta ware" which emits a LOT of alpha radio activity. The counter really chirps when you get it close. Same with the thorium in the mantles for Coleman type lanterns.
