In a late upload my intent was to show how I scan the medium format photos I've been taking, and while this may be an upload soon I wanted to step back by showing my appreciation. During my break from photography, a year or two ago, I got a call from my old boss, Mitch.
This man was the guy who sparked me to get into photography, and let me borrow his Canon AE-1 which was my first film camera...before even my Hasselblad 500C. It's fair to say that while my dad's old gear sparked my curiosity when I was very young, it was Mitch who inevitably motivated me to get into photography. In short, Bendersama Photography would really never be a "thing" if it's was for my old boss and manager from a mom and pop pizza joint.
With that out of the way, Mitch calls me and says he wants to clear out his closet of photography stuff, I acquiesce as a gear whore deep down, and am gifted a box of gear....and there it sat. Cut to I'm shooting 120 and 35mm like I never stopped photography and then I see this dusty old box. Inside are cameras and lenses in MINT CONDITION. I'm beside myself wondering about this winfall. How old are they, why are they in such great condition, why me..? It was at that moment that it hit me, he entrusted them to me. As keeper of the flame, of sorts. Like the Canon AE-1I later bought, which had somebody's Social Security Number etched on it, I know must keep these antique cameras and lenses clean, maintained, and full of film shot. Thank you Mitch for this gift. I'll put these to good use!

GEAR TALK
Today I want to discuss this iron horse piece of gear. I've had the Canon EF 135 f/2.8 Softfocus lens for almost four years now, that's my second lens ever (first being the 50mm f/1.8 mkII). This lens is beautiful! Not only does it work as a modeling lens for head shots (see the upcoming wedding website, friends), but it also has a nice softening effect I can adjust for the headshots. Now I know the soft effect is hokey, but I've seen it make the overall picture composition look great. To top it off the wide aperture makes my depth I love, with very creamy bokeh.
So you are asking, where're the drawbacks, if any? It's loud when focusing, as in do not bring to a quiet shoot. Also, the focusing is unforgiving in low light, as it frantically searches for something to focus on. However in its defense overall if the conditions are right, and it sees the target, it's quick to adjust and is at the ready.
I would grade this as an 8/10 as the soft focus might not be for everyone, but if you like the effect it gives, get the lens. The glass is nice, but you will eventually be growing into a better lens. An underdog lens, a commonly snuffed at the effect, and a surprisingly good piece of gear that treats you right if you treat it with love: That's the Softfocus 135mm from Canon.

Bendersama's 135mm f/2.8 softfocus lens auction
UPDATE 2/28/12
I with a heavy heart have sold the 135mm f/2.8 soft focus lens. This was part of a two-part exchange for upgrades. 135mm is being replaced by a highly suggested 100mm f/2.8 macro lens, due in part to the sharpness and quick AF (incidentally the 28-135mm IS USM which was supposed to replace my 28-105mm USM, actually was a downgrade; and so I'm replacing that with a 70-300mm IS USM).
I'm keeping this photo in my photostream due to how I did enjoy the lens. I would still suggest it as a starting lens, and this closes the book on this lens. Good lens, and good evening.
