This is one of our favorite "get-away" spots . . . it's Jackson Hole Gem Mine on US 64 in North Carolina between Franklin and Highlands and the "Jewels" come from dredging the Culasaja River (Nantahala National Forest) as well as some that are added to "enrich" the buckets of river sand you purchase and them "mine".
This particular gem mine is family-owned by some wonderful people that we have come to consider friends, and we always look forward to having a few extra $$$ and some time to spend the day with them!!
Reminds me - - - I "need" a garnet pendant and Holly and Chris have a new baby - - - hmmmmmmmm . . . ROAD TRIP!!!!
Cruised for 12 days aboard NCL Gem in December 2014. We sailed r/t New York City. Six ports of call in the Caribbean. This was our second NCL cruise as plantinum so we got to experience some speciality restaurans and the free "behind the scenes" tour. For this cruise we had an inside cabin, lower cost whenever possible.
We had a full moon one night as we sailed away from port.

Howard Gem rotovator made in 1948 with a 600cc JAP engine, has not run in a long time. But with a little work was soon running well, it will be pressed into use soon after a few repairs then maybe a resto in the future.
I cabbed up some of our club's stash of gem glaucophane. This material is from near Paso Robles; I will soon cab up some of the Panoche Hills glaucophane and post it, so you can compare and contrast.
This is the material that was initially given to us as "dumerite' (which is, I believe, due to some confusion with dumortierite). The "diagnosis" has been changed to diabase, but I do not think that that is correct either -- diabase is not this pretty, and I've neverheard of it being used for cabbing material.
The iced gems i used to eat when i was little only came in 4 colours - white, green, pink and yellow. This miniature version is so colourful! :D
