Iced gems were first made in 1850s (the biscuit part) by biscuit manufacturers Huntley and Palmers in Reading, Berkshire. Like many inventions, they were an accidental discovery as these biscuits shrunk and came out smaller than their intended size during a biscuit experimentation (kinda Willy Wonka huh)! The makers started selling them as Gems and subsequently added the icing bit in 1910 and as they say, there was no turning back. After a whole series of mergers/sell-offs, the production of these little guys now come under what is known as Jacob's today. The Huntley and Palmers brand today is a newly established biscuit company who bought the brand over from Danone when they sold it.

It is interesting to see how different people from all corners of the world identify with these little biscuits. Many people in Singapore and Malaysia probably thought these were indigenous to our part of the world, often referred to as local old school snacks, since many of us grew up eating them. But if you think about it, it is highly unlikely that the fishermen of Malaya ate biscuits back then in the 1700s before the Brits came along and colonised our part of the world. They were probably munching on kuehs :) until the British introduced, along with so many other wonderful things of the western world, their tea, biscuits, cream crackers and of course, these precious gems.

rough gut gems- these happen to be green Beryl- aka Emeralds! These have many inclusions- but were still quite nice. more 'natural' than those darn perfect ones!

This gem in Downtown Cairo, although not caving in on itself, still appears to have been abandoned for ages.

Cairo is located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers at the extreme southern tip of Illinois but, in a way, it feels more like the northernmost point in the Delta. At one point, Cairo was a major river city and transport hub, and the downtown appears to have stretched for blocks and blocks. Almost everything there is abandoned now, with the greatest density of buildings at the center and only a few fragments left further away. The latest Census projections show under 3,000 residents in a town that once had over 15,000 in the 1920s.

The components in Splendor are really great. These are the chips you use to build your gem collection. I've played this game so many times with so many people--and they've all loved it.

Designed by Filipe Alarcão, Portugal's renowned product designer, the Gem table is made with DuPont's monteli. A new material very similar to Corian. The monteli however absorbs the bonding of specific glue differently, making it impossible to view the pieces connecting. The end result is a piece that looks like it's been carved from a single stone. This item was manufactured in a limited numbered edition and each unit includes a signed certificate engraved in the bottom of each GEM.

This outfit was done extremely well, I liked how the gems would turn on and off while the models showed them off during the cat walk.

I will admit that it is difficult to photograph it though as the lights were almost completely dark and I had a little trouble getting the lens to find something to focus on when it was so dark in the room! I did a couple of shots of course, head on flash and bounce. Guess which won?

The Gem didn't last too long as a theater. It opened up in a converted department store in 1941, partly to cater to a US Army battalion that was located in town. The owners installed a solid concrete Art Deco marquee, but it was all for naught; the war ended and the Gem closed in 1949.

According to this 1988 picture, it doesn't look like much has changed, except for the unfortunate loss of some palm trees.

The Gem Stane sits on the banks of the scenic Bruntis Loch in Kirroughtree forest. It was made by sculptor Gorden Young from polished pink quartz. It is 1.25 metres tall and weighs approximately 1.75 tons. There are seven "stanes" throughout Galloway and the Borders. All vary in design and are situated along the 7stanes MTB trails.
