Location:
Above the various entrance to the markets, on Angel Street, Castle Street and Castle Garden.
Description:
Each panel shows a building from Sheffield’s past, that was located in the area of the market.
Commission:
Sheffield City Council and the Market Traders.
Comment:
Woodall was originally commissioned to initiate a more comprehensive project, but the money was unfortunately spent in the design and manufacture of the archways over the entrance to the market area and the entrance to Angel Street from Fitzalan Square.

Castle Gate
Castlegate is one of eleven Quarters in Sheffield's City Centre. It is now bound by Commercial Street and part of the High Street to the south, Exchange Place to the east, the road named Castlegate to the north, Angel Street and Snig Hill to the west. Castlegate is the main thoroughfare to and from the North of Sheffield as it links Park Square to The Wicker, although it is intended that the Sheffield Northern Relief Road will take this traffic when completed, allowing Exchange Place, Castlegate and The Wicker to be downgraded. Castlegate, built along a portion of the River Don, was the old location of the slaughter houses. It also served as a back entrance to the Alexandra Opera House as well as the market quarter situated on the site of the former castle of Sheffield, hence the name of the street and quarter.
Gate to the Richardson House at Harmony Hall. My wife had to work, so I took a couple of cameras and spent over an hour at Harmony Hall Plantation.
Just the main gate for my next castle, again, this is not where the gate will be in the finished version.

The words on the sign do not match the padlock and chain on the gate, sadly it seems to be because of drug users.
Ash Common Bridge, Basingstoke Canal.
Water level down, allowing us to see the quadrant which was for the automatic gate, that lay flat on the canal bed, but if there was a breach in the nearby embankment, it would be pulled up by the rushing water and stop the flow.
Known as a 'Brindley Gate'..

Aperlae's Purple House lies beyond. The name of the place is derived from the dye that was produced here from murex trunculus snails in ancient times, not the color of the house itself. Note the strings of snail shells hanging on the gate.
If memory serves, Purple House seemed more like a junked up castaway hippie refuge.

Added to Cool Gray City of Love for chapter 32, "Happy Trails". This chapter is about dirt trails in the city. Kamiya mentions a few, and this one, near the top of Telegraph Hill, I had not heard of before. He said the gate had signs saying "Please Shut Gate" and "Farewell", but I didn't see those, only the "Stairs" sign directing the less-adventurous to the approved route.
You can't go very far on the old East Belt / West Belt connector without hitting a private gate. Very few customers there ship by train now and the fence and gates secure the properties. This gate is at 9th Street looking east. There are several more like this west of here. I believe the farthest west connection here is J.L. Clark which is east of Kishwaukee Street. The Belt no longer crosses Kishwaukee Street.
Gate of Amasra
Amasra derives its name from Amastris, niece of the last Persian king Darius III. She married Dionysius, tyrant of Heraclea. She combined four Ionian colonies, Sesamus, Cytorus, Cromna, also mentioned in the Iliad, and Tium. Tium, says Strabo, soon detached itself from the community, but the rest kept together, and Sesamus was the acropolis of Amastris. Amastris was a confederation or union of three places. The territory of Amastris produced a great quantity of boxwood, which grew on Mount Cytorus.
