A small white wild Garlic Mustard flower (Allieria petiolata) in macro. It's considered invasive because it crowds out other plants. #WildFlower #white #blanco #Natur #nature #fleur #Blumen #flower #plant #plante #Pflanze #GarlicMustard #AllieriaPetiolata #ワイルドフラワ
A few years back I started to do some gardening for wildlife, focused on butterflies.
Last year as a result, I recieved the first visit of a female Orange Tip, which laid eggs on garlic mustard. I was so happy!
I reared the catterpillars and after 10 months a beautiful butterfly has emerge.
in the garden and very invasive... but they do make the prettiest tiny flowers... so I leave them and then I'll weed wack them down!!
I was thrilled to meet this lovely male orange tip butterfly perched on some garlic mustard in spring this year.
After allll these years, I only just noticed I'm losing significant detail when I resize my images as the last step in processing (maybe could be resolved by upgrading my very old software, Photoshop Elements 10?) . I usually resize to 2048 pixels on the longest edge, but I've left this one full size after its crop (and it seems to be displaying OK on Flickr ... worth viewing large, if you're interested).

Garlic mustard, also known as 'Jack-by-the-hedge', likes shady places, such as the edges of woods and hedgerows. It can grow to over a metre tall and has small white flowers that appear from April. It is a biennial plant, so takes two years to complete its lifecycle. It grows young leaves in its first season, which it keeps over winter, and then flowers in the spring of its second year.

Garlic Mustard is one of the food plants of Orange-tip butterfly caterpillars.

On the dreaded Garlic Mustard. This plant is an evasive species and although it is a member of the mustard family (host plant for Falcates) it is poisonous to its caterpillars. Unfortunately the female butterfly sometimes mistakes Garlic Mustard with its host plant and lays its eggs on the plant. The newly hatched caterpillars eat it and die. Efforts are being made in Maryland to remove this plant from sensitive areas.

For all of you who wondered: since last summer we just had very little free time, so we stopped posting photos and very rarely went out with our cameras. So - we'll see whether I (Uli) find time to resume posting some of our photos now and then.
Anyway, this little fellow seemed to be already sleeping while we took a
n evening walk - lucky me :-)

My first Helophilus pendulus sighting this year, it's commonly known as "The Footballer hoverfly" on Garlic Mustard flowers in the garden HFDF! Have a great weekend everyone, I'm off to a Plant & Cake sale organised by the local Ramsgrange Horticultural society. Will hopefully come back with some goodies. I'll catch up with comments later.

The sun did not shine but the sky was a wonderful soft box. Using my Zenitar 50mm f1.9 vintage lens with an extension tube I was able to shoot this.
