Masha and I went through this abandoned house. It's was very beautiful but very eerie.

This controller was from my Nintendo GameCube I used to play when I was a kid. And this house had a "memory aurora" feel to it... If that makes sense. Written on a wall in the top of the house was a few paragraphs of people who had visited explaining how they remembered when the house when they were kids, and how they loved to come over and visit the family that lived there. Anyways, this combined with the nostalgic memories of my game controller sort of turned into this compilation of memory.

Image inspired by a fight scene in MGS: Twin Snakes for the Gamecube. Snake only had the Socom in that scene, but whatever. Didn't play that version of the game because the cinematic sequences were too over the top for my taste.

Notes:

Only fx in this shot is a slight brightness and saturation enhancement to Ninja's eye. A less time consuming switch for me. :-p

I felt like doing a bit of design work, and this happened to nicely coincide with the upcoming 35th anniversary of the release of Game and Watch, Nintendo's first widely successful game console. Including all of the controllers from Nintendo's most important historical releases (not including XL versions of the handhelds), this spans 3 and a half decades of gaming.

I'm a huge fan of Nintendo, always have been. What Nintendo does well is they try new things - even if those things don't always work out (eg: Virtual Boy, WiiU, Game Boy Micro).

I started replaying Super Mario Sunshine™ on my Nintendo GameCube earlier this year, so I was inspired to make a few builds inspired by the game, the largest of which is just over 10" tall, including the Shine Sprite base. This was a fun build since it incorporates a lot of newer round pieces such as 2x2 round tiles with holes, 2x2 round plates with single studs, 6x6 round plates, and 3x3 rounded macaroni bricks, and of course the Jurassic World Gyrosphere pieces that I used on my Gumball Machine a few years back.

Okay, there are a few gaps in the collection: I'm still hunting a silver / gold and crystal screen editions of the Game & Watch range (I'm not prepared to pay £500 on eBay!). The Gameboy Light and the backlit Gameboy Advance SP (AGS101 model) are also fairly elusive. Roll on the 3DS!!

So Mario Kart Wii, I've been really looking forward to playing this. Not quite sure how I feel about it yet.

They've certainly pushed the innovation all the way up to 11, which consists of a mash-up of old courses from the SNES through the DS right up to the new Wii levels.

It sounds good so far, but the simple pleasure of classic Mario Kart was always the ability to hook-up a few corners, arm yourself with a red shell and then let course knowledge and hand-eye to do the rest. The new Wii version seems to have abandond this approach in favour of a complete melee of weapon items, drivers and a less than accurate control system.

The problem as I see it right now is that the control system isn't as reliable as you need it to be in the midst of a roller coaster battle with eleven other drivers and a 90 degree bend staring you in the face. As a result you wil our character around the bend and the Wii wheel takes you off in a complete other direction.

Some things they have corrected from the Gamecube version however like the way you can do power starts, and you can now hop or drift around corners again. However that Wii wheel, it's just so infuriating.

The Wii wheel is a great idea don't get me wrong, the issue is that because you're essentially rotating a round piece of plastic in 3d space there's no feedback. The net result is that on a number of occasions I've found myself 180 degrees to the direction I'm supposed to be. It gets worse though because if you try using one of the standard controllers (you can use the nun chuck, classic controller or a Gamecube pad) it's like trying to play a first person shooter with a joystick - you under steer constantly because the game has been designed for swift freedom of movement using that wheel.

So ultimately my initial impressions are that they did a really good job with this game, but having to wait an entire console generation for another installment to fix the shortfalls is quite disheartening. They've fixed so many things, given a nod to retro fans and really upped the visuals - but all this coupled to a less than refined control system the game falls short.

Ultimately the SNES version is still definitive for now, I hope Nintendo see sense and release it for the Virtual Console soon. As for Mario Kart Wii, I'll play it but I just know that I'm going to get really frustrated with that wheel.

I love the Pikmin games.

I love building up a huge army and just swarming everything.
