Texas Hill Country with Gus

I've heard that photographing black dogs and cats is challenging and wanted to give it a try. My neighbor was kind enough to let me take this shot of their black labrador, Gus. The shot was taken in the late afternoon sun and shot as a raw file. If I were to do this over again, I would have bracketed the exposure rather than shooting continuously and merged images in post.

This handsome boy belongs to the veterinarian I work for. He is a sweet and lovely Shiloh Shepherd.

I took this photo of Gus, (Asparagus), back in January when we had a bit of snow!

This past week, while we have been sick, Gus was sick, as well, and with symptoms like ours! We took him to the vet on Thursday and he was totally lethargic. He got a steroid shot and an antibiotic shot and nose drops . . . We ended up taking him back on Friday, too, where they kept him and gave him IV fluids until close of business. I am SO happy to say that today, he is MUCH better! Aside from being sick ourselves, worrying about him was awful! But he ate tonight and felt like getting up for a while to be petted! He is getting special treatment and he knows it! :)

Stopped by the local animal rescue shelter to get a few quick photos of the new guy, Gus. He's as sweet as he is handsome! :)

I am still working on catching up with my visiting so my apologies if I haven't stopped by just yet but I will! :)

A new shape plucked from a blog post I did at the beginning of this year. Details of the look can of course be found in that post:

This week I went to check on the "parking lot cats"...I drove past the Rottweiller tethered to a zip line and stopped to take another pix of him.

Well, I got "caught" red handed by the owner who came running outside to see what I was doing.

I immediately told him how gorgeous his dog was and that I was a photographer just taking a quick snapshot.

We ended up having a long discussion. He said that this Rottie is five months old....and named Gus [ short for Gustapo]. He said Gus was tethered because he had a habit of crossing the road and hanging out with the cows. He reassured me that Gus goes for a long walk every morning and likes to be outside instead of in the house w/him. I said.....that it would be better if he was "fenced in". ....and that Gus should have the option of being outside or in the house w/ him instead of being tied up.

I tried to be "nice" and he asked my opinion about having Gus tethered as it seems other passer bys have taken notice. So I gave him my thoughts about it. Hopefully, he'll put up a fence for Gus.

I met handsome Gus a few days ago. He was quite the pleasant gentleman and allowed me to snap his photo. Featured in "Explore" March 11, 2011.

Gus has a plan. Probably. It may involve rabbits. (No luck there). It may involve the UK’s antipode. That’s some way off the coast of New Zealand, but only if he follows a straight line. Or with some clever navigation he could be in Eastern Australia by Easter. If so I’ll message ahead so Bruce or Victoria can get lunch on.

Meanwhile you’ll note Freddie adopts his customary “supervisory role”. That's the management classes for you...

High on Life III

I've been attempting to shoot Gus in celebration of his official 2nd birthday. Official? Well, it's an educated guess. He came from rescue, was nervous and faced an uncertain future. Placed in the hands of an experienced carer, with just a little help from my boy he's come along wonderfully. High on Life? You bet !

apparently yesterday was "national puppy day", so - a little belatedly - here's gus from last fall. shame he's not quite so cute now :-)

Gus the beagle in heather

He was the first stud born in our cattery. We used him for about seven years. What a great genetic foundation he gave us! Gus is now retired and at fifteen looks years younger. He lives with my brother. We're still buddies.

Well, yes we DID . . . this poor boy has been showing up here on the river for 6 weeks, boney, hungry, tattered and torn, and fully intact! Dear me . . . So we had him neutered after none of the neighbors we knew claimed him or knew where he came from. He is not feral, but scared.

We kept him up for a couple of days in the kitchen/in the cage, but after than time, we moved the cage into the den, with a second "fence" around it so "the People" (as we call our group of cats) could see him and get the idea. By the time he had worn off the anesthesia and felt better, of course he cried to get out- which got him a LOT of sympathy from the other cats.

Yesterday, we let him out of the cage, so he could meet the others in person, and so we could show him that he could go into the cat-safe yard. He seems very happy and has been eating like a miniature horse! I think he is scared he will not get enough to fill his belly when next he is hungry, but hopefully he will soon know that.

He learned to use the pet door today! SO exciting, and first thing he did when he came back into the house? He got into the cage, which I haven't taken down yet! He feels very safe in there and I am leaving the door open for just that reason!

We intended to do a catch/neuter/release, but Ken was adamant the kitty was already too chewed up and not safe down here, with the many predators that roam the woods. I am SO thankful that Ken is such a kind man!

(Oh! We usually use plant names for our cats, though many have come with names already attached. We thought Asparagus was appropriate for him, since he was going to be a "spare!" Then, it just works so well to call him Gus!)

My dog, Gus, was groomed yesterday, and I'm very pleased with the results.

Gus could not reunite with Peonia wearing just his army belt and hat so he has been at the mouse tailor since yesterday. I made his shirt and tie from my husband's cast offs and his pants were once part of my pants. His vest is wool felt and I added seed buttons. I had to make each of these items 2x to get the right fit. I started with patterns from a dollhouse dressing book.
