The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl, a UNESCO world heritage site.

When you write and say about this temple, usually cite the words of Igor Grabar, "the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl near Vladimir is not only the most perfect temple, created in Russia, but also one of the greatest monuments of world art".

The temple was erected in one year in 1165 by Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky.

In the days of his "youth" the temple looked different, and the hill-a pedestal, is the work of human hands.

The underground part of the temple is 5,30 m . At the mouth of the Nerl rose artificial hill, which has become the pedestal for the Church of the Intercession and protect it from the treacherous waters of the spring. The hill was covered with a shell of white stone slabs with gutters and stairs leading down to the Marina.

The proportions of the temple are unusually graceful and beautiful. Often this temple is compared with the image of maiden Here everything is directed on achieving maximal effect of slenderness and height. Many parts, subtle, very delicate, emphasize the vertical axis of the construction.

The grizzly bear is surely one of our planet's greatest omnivores. I've seen grizzlies in our area eat everything from mice to moose and grass to buffaloberries.

This young boar is showing off a fine hump, which is one of the immediately recognizable features of the grizzly. The hump is a massive muscle, which the grizzlies use to dig up roots and tubers and also get at small rodents and insects.

Health is the greatest possession. Contentment is the greatest treasure. Confidence is the greatest friend. Non-being is the greatest joy.

Ladies and gents, this is the moment you've waited for

Been searching in the dark, your sweat soaking through the floor

And buried in your bones there's an ache that you can't ignore

Taking your breath, stealing your mind

And all that was real is left behind

Don't fight it, it's coming for you, running at ya

It's only this moment, don't care what comes after

Your fever dream, can't you see it getting closer

Just surrender 'cause you feel the feeling taking over

It's fire, it's freedom, it's flooding open

It's a preacher in the pulpit and you'll find devotion

There's something breaking at the brick of every wall it's holding I'll let you now

So tell me do you wanna go?

Where it's covered in all the colored lights

Where the runaways are running the night

Impossible comes true, it's taking over you

Oh, this is the greatest show

We light it up, we won't come down

And the sun can't stop us now

Watching it come true, it's taking over you

Oh, this is the greatest show

I've been taking pictures of Great Blue Herons as long as I have been taking pictures of birds. The colors, the regal bearing, the grace despite its size. In Florida I had a chance to study one up very close. I think the image says it all about this bird.

The Gniezno Cathedral, together with the Lech Hill, is one of the greatest monuments in Poland.

In 999, the funeral of St. Wojciech and his canonization by Pope Sylvester II. In 1000 to tomb of St. Wojciech, Emperor Otto III arrived and it was so-called The First Congress of Gniezno. The Archdiocese of Gniezno and the First Ecclesiastical Metropolis in Poland, subject only to the Pope, were created. The silver reliquary of Saint Adalbert is located in the center of the Gothic chancel of the cathedral.

In 1025, Bolesław Chrobry was crowned king here, and after his death, his son Mieszko II. In 1076, Bolesław II Szczodry was crowned king of Poland.

In the cathedral, there are the famous Gniezno Doors depicting the biography of St. Wojciech. In the basement of the cathedral, you can see the relics of a stone building from the end of the 9th century, discovered during archaeological research, and fragments of the walls of the Basilica of Mieszko I.

During the first centuries of the emerging statehood, Gniezno was the capital of Poland. The last coronation of the King of Poland, Prince Przemysł II was in 1295. Wacław II of Bohemia was also crowned king here in 1300 after the armed seizure of Gniezno. In 1331, the Teutonic Knights entered the first capital of Poland, destroying the city and the temple.

I Zjazd Gnieźnieński. Utworzono archidiecezję gnieźnieńską i I metropolię kościelną w Polsce, podległą wyłącznie papieżowi.

W 1331 roku do pierwszej stolicy Polski wkroczyli Krzyżacy, niszcząc miasto i świątynię.

I hiked up to the top of the earthen dam that forms Lake Mercer because the colliding weather fronts that afternoon promised and delivered a very interesting sky. The trail across the top of the berm brought to mind the theme song from "The Hobbit" hence the title of this shot.

Let go of the moment that life makes you hold

To measure the meaning can make you delay

It's time you stop thinking and wasting the day. . . . "

The Esterházy Palace at Fertőd is the greatest Baroque-Rococo monument complex in Hungary. On the site of the Palace, Duke Joseph Esterházy initiated the construction of a hunting lodge with twenty-two rooms in 1720, based on the plans of the Viennese architect, Erhard Martinelli. However, the golden age of the Palace began when Nicholas Esterházy (also known as Miklós ‘the Magnificent’) succeeded to the ducal title.

Utilising the grandeur of 18th century Baroque-Rococo architecture, Duke Nicholas enlarged the palace, and with the help of Nicolaus Jakoby; he created a large garden with several alleys. At the French Garden with an Opera House and a Marionette theatre and employed German theatre companies as well as Italian and French ballet dancers. The orchestra of the Palace led by Joseph Haydn the great musician and composer, the chamber composer and conductor at Eszterháza, was well-known all over Europe.

The second golden period of Eszterháza came about at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The suites of the Palace and the French Garden were restored for Duke Nicholas Esterházy IV. and his wife, Countess Margaret Cziráky. Enchanted by Eszterháza the Countess spent her dowry on the restoration of the palace and the gardens. The modernisation of the park started in 1902. Among the designers of the gardens was Anton Umlauft, one of the best-known gardeners in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

Today I had the pleasure of spending time with one of my dearest friends at Buttonwoods Farm in Connecticut. These junctures are fleeting as the sunflowers in this immense field will soon become a deliberate act of omission. Within the last week many of the sunflowers have already succumbed to an early grave.

NOT A COMPOSITE!

The greatest lightship on earth has returned to Sydney :-)

I haven’t been to Taronga Zoo in decades so a meet up group was the perfect excuse to visit as Vivid had light installations there for the first time as part of the festival.

taronga.org.au/100-years/centenary-events/vivid-at-taronga

The giraffes were the only animals out at that time and with mum, dad and 2 kids grew a big crowd to watch them with the lights of Sydney behind them. Very tricky to get the giraffe’s face sharp in the difficult light nicely, with the coloured lights in the background. ISO12800 was needed. I couldn’t bring up the shadows at that level but the blacks are good enough for this composition I think.

Thanks to Paul and Helen for organising it

Another rock (with little orange colour) in the reserve "Piekło" ("Hell") in Poland :)

The Rocks "Piekło" (Hell Rocks) near Niekłań is the inanimate nature reserve, located in the Stęporków commune. The reserve was established in 1959 to protect interesting sandstone formations caused by wind erosion. It covers an area of over 6 ha of mixed forest with a predominance of 200-year-old pines and oaks, but the greatest value of the reserve are picturesque rocks carved by erosive processes in Triassic and Lower Jurassic sandstones. On a length of several hundred meters, there is a series of monadnocks, taking unusual shapes, such as rock mushrooms, chimneys or pulpits. Their height reaches in height from 2 to 8 m. Fantastic forms and their dark color were probably the reason for many legends and names. The reserve is also a concentration of rich flora and fauna.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Został utworzony w 1959 r. w celu zachowania osobliwych form skalnych. Obejmuje powierzchnię ponad 6 ha lasu mieszanego z przewagą 200-letnich sosen i dębów, jednak największą wartość rezerwatu stanowią malownicze skałki wyrzeźbione przez procesy erozyjne w triasowych i dolnojurajskich piaskowcach. Skałki tworzą dwa oddzielne skupiska: wschodnie i zachodnie.

Sometimes one finds the greatest treasures hidden deep, as perhaps in the depths of the ocean on the ocean floor. There, where a small ray of light has lost its way and makes something glitter, like silver. A little something perhaps, that has something special for you. Maybe you can listen to the sound of the sea, if you hold the found to the ear*. Unfortunately, this small snail shell has a hole and it is already a bit worn over the years in the ocean. Nevertheless, this snail shell is valuable to me. Well – I did not dive into the eerie depths of the water – I just picked it up from the beach. That was not difficult, that was by the way while walking on the soft sand. But now that I have the snail shell lying on my desk here, brought from a faraway land, it's important to me and especially ...

*The "sound of the sea" in the shell / Wikipedia

/

It is said that the sound of the sea should be heard in shells. It is possible to record the noise of the shell with a microphone without a human close by. The noise would then be heard on the recording. In fact, this is a resonance phenomenon: as in a wind instrument, there is an air column in the shell, which has a certain natural frequency. That's the sound that comes when you make the shell swing. The air column is vibrated by barely noticeable sounds in the environment, whose frequencies correspond approximately to the natural frequency of the shell. As a result, these otherwise inaudible ambient noise is significantly enhanced. The resulting sound mixture is perceived by people as noise.

Das „Meeresrauschen“ in der Muschel / Wikipedia

/
