Looking at the image I posted last night, I realized that I didn't upload the final version. Here is the better image.

As soon as a Reading-bound train departed the yard in Allentown, Pennsylvania, it had to cross the Lehigh River on the former Allentown Terminal bridge. Here a Conrail manifest gets under way on a brisk January morning.

All now working for CSX, Chessie System GP40-2-6246, B30-7-5545, Seaboard System B36-7-5907, GP??-???? and Chessie System GP40-2-4364 are on the point of a unit ore train on CSX's Old Main Line Sub. The US Rt. 1 overpass is in the distance.

CSX local job D700 rolls west down Saugatuck Hill on a colorful fall day in west Michigan. The train originated at CSX's Wyoming Yard near Grand Rapids, and is en route to servicing industries near Benton Harbor and beyond. Road slug 2301 leads the way with GP40-2 6930 providing the power.

With mismatched block signals and number boards, Rio Grande GP40-2 No. 3112 leads a 72-car UT04L from the siding at American Fork, Utah on March 9, 1996.

Southbound Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac intermodal train No. 171 (Kearny, NJ-Florida Points) crests Rutherglen Hill at Rutherglen, VA on Dec. 5, 1986. The RF&P power operated through to Kearny and RF&P units were placed on each end of the consist because the the ATC requirement on the RF&P. After swapping blocks of cars with another job at the siding east of Moore Haven, the South Central Florida Express Cane 1 job rolls through Sugarton, Florida with a train of loaded sugar cane cars bound for the mill. As the tracks approach Clewiston, they turn south and cross over one of the many irrigation canals that criss-cross the region.

Rio Grande GP40-2 No. 3121 leads a Denver to Salt Lake City manifest freight through Lakota Junction near Orem, Utah on April 12, 1990. Historically, this was a diamond crossing at grade between Rio Grande's double track, CTC controlled Subdivision 6 mainline and Union Pacific's CTC controlled Provo Subdivision. Switches were added when the diamonds were ripped out in 1985, and trackage rights were granted to the UP on the D&RGW.

It’s a dark, windy, and rainy Sunday on the south side of Chicago, as train PF9 heads west for Belt Railway of Chicago’s Commerical Avenue Yard with trio of geeps instead of the regular CSS SD38s that live on this job. Seen here running wrong main while crossing the Calumet River at 130th street, Engineer Kevin Vahey is in run 8 with a duo of CSS GP38-2s while sandwiching a FURX GP40-2 and a 129 cars in tow. This was the first train to Chicago is over 6 days due to the ongoing NICD track project in Michigan City, IN. Taken: 4-24-22

Conrail GP40-2-3321, B40-8-5061 & GP40-2-3397 are on the point of E/B train Mail #8, on CR's Chicago Line, approaching the County Road 28 grade crossing.

A week later, a bulletin was apparently sent out stating that the NS geeps are not to lead to and from Peoria.

Usually, they trail, but this day was one of the rare instances where the NS unit got to lead. Some would be mad about this NS GP40-2 leading the Iowa EMDs, but I will take the CR GP40-2 leader, as they are uncommon here.

Southbound CSX manifest R409 pounds the diamond at Doswell, VA on Nov. 3, 1996, led by GP40-2 No. 6242. The orange cars on the head end are Tropicana cars returning to Florida for reloading.

Rio Grande GP40-2 No. 3124 leads train No. 148 east of Springville, Utah on Aug. 6, 1989.

A trainman gives a friendly wave as a westbound Conrail manifest climbs up the East Slope near MG Tower, PA on Oct. 2, 1982 with GP40-2 No. 3399 and two GP40's.

Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac GP40-2 No. 143 and GP40 No. 122 await their next run at Bryan Park Terminal in Richmond, VA on Jan. 19, 1991. Bryan Park was closed between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am. Power was lined up before 11:00 pm for anticipated moves during the night and parked on the ready tracks. Back at that time, usually when I had friends come in from out of town, we would head down to Bryan Park for some bulb shots after the shop forces went home for the day. It worked out well over the years. One note about something that many will catch. GP40-2 No. 143 is "backwards." At this point , because of the RF&P units going off line and getting turned, it became impossible to keep the even numbered units pointed north, and vice versa. The end was near.

A Western Maryland GP40-2 leads an eastbound train through Washington, DC. This is taken in the vicinity of the Metro Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood station.

After a brief stoppage L422 gets moving west to Mitchell with Csx 4419 which is one of the last EMD units to have a YN2 scheme.

Rio Grande GP40-2 #3118 leads ex-Conrail GP40 #3140 and another GP40-2 Westbound out of Denver in May of 1990.

I have noted on the slide mount that this was the last Denver to Salt Lake City "Railblazer" to run.

Northbound Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac manifest No. 120 crosses the South Anna River near Taylorsville, VA on Aug. 28, 1977 with GP40-2's No's. 142 and 145, and GP35 No. 135.

A pair of Union Pacific GPs lead the Davis local east out of Ozol yard in Martinez, CA on a September morning. I really enjoyed shooting the plethora of 4 axle EMDs on UP in the Bay Area, you could always count on something interesting turning up on the locals.

Southbound Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac freight No. 109 highballs around the broad curve at Penola, VA on July 24, 1982 with two GP40-2's bracketing a GP35. Potomac Yard-Waycross No. 109 was the hottest of the manifest trains heading down SCL's former ACL side at Richmond. In addition to its regular traffic, it also carried a block of empty Tropicana cars ahead of the caboose.

Southbound Delaware & Hudson manifest RPPY led by B&M GP40-2 No. 311 waits beside a helper set led by D&H U33C No. 651 at Lanesboro, PA on Oct. 12, 1985.. This is part of the detour movements being operated around the project enlarging the tunnel at Tunnel, NY.

Conrail EMD GP40-2 No. 3378 leads an eastbound CR freight out of Gallitzin Tunnel at Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on October 23, 1988. In 1995, the Gallitzin Tunnel was abandoned in favor of an adjoining, enlarged, double track Allegheny Tunnel.

The engineer has them in the corner as he brings southbound Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac hotshot No. 409 through Arkendale, VA on July 13, 1985 with GP40-2 No. 141 and GP40's No's. 125 and 122.

A pair of SD40Ns spliced by a GP40-2 pull LTB85 out of South St. Paul as they begin the short trip up to Roseport. I posted a shot of LTB85 at this spot last week, but figured it was worth redoing with better light. The 1610 looks pretty good despite being cycled through the SD40N overhaul program way back in 2011.

The tri-weekly SU-99 crossed the Hackensack River on the beginning of its 200+ mile journey to Binghamton, NY with SD33ECOs 3016 and 3012 leading. GP40-2 3046 is also along for the ride.

FEC GP40-2 431 leads train 121 south through Dania Beach, FL on their way south to Hialeah, FL.

The train must have ran into issues as 431 was set to lead. It isn't too common to see EMD leaders on road trains so this was a nice treat.

An eastbound Baltimore & Ohio manifest crosses Thomas Viaduct in Relay, MD on Aug. 7, 1978 with GP40-2 No. 4296 and WM SD40 No. 7571.

Rio Grande GP40-2 No. 3117 leads priority train No. 187 one mile east of Soldier Summit on July 24 1987.

Speaking of 'fresh out of the box" (we were, weren't we?), a brand new Chessie GP40-2 is hard to beat, especially when you've got some fresh snow to reflect the sunlight back up to highlight those dark blue trucks. Otherwise, shooting Chessie when it was fresh was a bear, trying to properly expose the shot for that dark bottom.

As the sun sets below the the horizon, a US Sugar Corp. Railroad train with loads of sugarcane approaches the mill in Clewiston, Florida, closely following the train ahead of it that came off the Flaghole Subdivision. In the lead is GP40-2 4201, an ex Milwaukee Road GP40 that now wears the railroad's newest paint scheme.

Northbound RF&P intermodal train No. 272 breaks into the curve at Penola, VA on Dec. 12, 1987, led by GP40-2 No. 144. If I recall correctly, No. 272 was run on an as needed basis for the peak UPS season.

Three CSX EMD GP40-2's howl up the steep Cumberland Mountain grade in southeast Tennessee with the M780 local in tow. 780 is bound for home base in Tullahoma with 39 loads of limestone on the drawbars from Anderson, Alabama, at the base of the grade. This version of the local is so heavy that the Cowan, TN, based helper engines have been called over the mountain to shove the train up the incredibly steep east grade to the top at Cumberland Mountain tunnel. Even with helper on the rear, and all 17,000 combined horsepower wide open uphill, this train is barely clearing 15mph on the climb. The grade here exceeds 2% climbing up the east face of the mountain. The Nashville Chattanooga and Saint Louis railroad blasted several huge rock cuts through ridgelines that stood in their way towards the summit during construction. These cuts are some of the tightest, and most impressive on any class one railroad in the east. Getting here is not something anyone should attempt alone, and I'm grateful I had the opportunity to experience it firsthand. The roar of a loaded train ascending the grade is a deafening, but awesome experience to take in here...

Thanks for looking!

GP40-2 number 4419 is one of the last examples of a CSX standard cab in YN2 paint, and when I heard it was in Winchester as local power, I jumped on the chance to shoot it. After a failed attempt where it trailed, a second attempt at getting the 4419 leading on the Patio to Corbin local found me getting what I came for. Going track speed down the L&N CC Mainline, they emerge from the tunnel at Sinks as they near London and Corbin.

An unusually short southbound Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac No. 275 rolls through Doswell, VA in the snow on Jan. 15, 1982 with lone GP40-2 No. 147.
