En route from Anchorage to Seward, locomotive 3013 works a grade in the mountainous terrain of the Kenai Peninsula. Oops, I said I was done posting Alaska photos ... I guess I was just blowing smoke :)

This UP local did not run for four days over the Christmas weekend. This area got just a couple of inches of snow but winds up to 60mph blew a few good drifts. This GP40-2 makes easy work breaking its way down the Troy Grove sub. This sub allows 25 MPH and the 1417 and 4804 with 32 empty sand hoppers had no problems keeping track speed.

SP GP40-2 #7608 leads a southbound SP (SPCSL) train past UD Tower in Joliet, IL. The EPA in 2023, would not appreciate the empty drums laying around, like they were in this photo.

This is shot on 2-18-1995.

With a train of empty hoppers in tow, two Chesapeake & Ohio GP40-2’as and three U30C’s roll westward between Charlottesville and Ivy, Virginia.

The imposing mile-and-a-half long sheet of ice known as Explorer Glacier peers out from its vantage 2200 feet above in the Kenai Mountains, staying largely inconspicuous due to the obscurity of dense fog on a gloomy Alaskan summer day. Far below, all 6 headlights illuminate the way for the engineer gazing out the L glass of his Alaska original GP40-2 still wearing its factory 1970s black and yellow colors, skirting the marshes and ponds along Turnagain Arm with train 120N en route to the state capital of Anchorage. In tow are goods fresh off the rail barge connecting Alaska at the port of Whittier with the Lower 48, manifest including just about anything and everything from containerized cargo to trucks, steel products, and carload traffic.

A trio of GP40-2's are assigned to SE-POb (Selkirk to Rigby) are all down grade into Fitchburg. When looking through all by Dad's negatives in this time frame the GP40's ruled the B&M.

This photo stuck out to me, there seems to be a large cut of old 40ft box cars on the headpin with plenty of brake smoke coming off the old shoes. A guess, maybe they are headed to Billerica to be cut up,

B&M GP40-2 310 & B&M GP38-2 208 are handling LA-ME (Lawrence, MA to Mechanicville, NY) on this nice late fall afternoon. I do not recall where the TOFC came out of, I assume Somerville, then up the New Hampshire Route to Lowell. MA.

Dad always referred to this location as the 'Junk Yard', as to the right there was a junk yard full of old cars.

A southbound CSX empty unit coal train grinds over the crest of Rutherglen Hill on the RF&P Subdivision at Rutherglen, VA on Dec. 11, 1999, led by GP40-2 No. 6156.

Three B&M GP40-2's are powering BO-ME (Boston to Mechanicville) and three B&M GP-9's are assigned to SA-ED (Salem to East Deerfield). The two trains are combined here for a six unit EMD consist.

Of course like all of the older photos much has changed in this view, the Freight Main is still double track, West Main St. siding is still in place and of course all the B&M blue is just a memory!

After some fresh snowy powder that was mostly gone by sunrise, a late afternoon South Shore “Belt Job” or AF4, heads west through Gary, IN along Interstate 90, enroute for Belt Railway of Chicago’s Commerical Avenue Yard. Seen here, CSS 2005 (GP38-2) and FURX 4223 (GP40-2) take charge of taking 27 cars up and down the curvy hill over the former EJ&E, now the CN Matteson Sub as they coast down in run 8 fashion. This is one of the bigger hills on the railroad, the railroad that Trains Magazine calls “Flat & forgiving” a name that fans and employees frankly just can’t stand to hear anymore. Taken: 2-16-23.

A westbound CSX intermodal train negotiates s reverse curve near Meyersdale, Pennsylvania.

Another day, another afternoon Harbor chase, as train BP2 gets underway departing Blue Island Yard, seen here turning the corner at 138th street with the famed IHB 4010, a three of a kind GP40P-2 leading IHB 4012, a regular GP40-2. They’re on their approach to BI JCT where they’d blast off on their westward journey on the IHB West Line bound for Union Pacific’s Proviso Yard. Taken: 5-26-23

Everyone likes a little P in their GP40 right? Can’t go wrong with that!

An eastbound CSX unit coal train approaches Doe Gully, WV on Oct. 15, 1987 with GP40-2 No. 6623 and two SD50's. Those 60 ft. hi-cubes in the shadows over to the right are from a derailment that occured back in July. Eastbound hotshot No. 376 encountered a sun kink about where the power is located, spilling about 30 cars. It was obvious that appliance traffic was an important part of No. 376's make up. I'll never forget the huge pile of washers, dryers, ranges and refrigerators.

An early running 393 rumbles west across Elm St in Mechanic Falls behind GP40-2 3035 on a pleasant June afternoon. Neither the 3035, or the 3805 behind it need to put in much effort moving the train on this day, as it's only a short twenty-two cars of mostly empties.

Chessie System GP40-2-4239 & GP30-6931 (both sub-lettered for B&O) are W/B on track two of the Washington Sub with symbol freight SL-49. Note the E/B CPL signal, far right, above the pole line.

Westbound empty hoppers have just left Altoona, Pennsylvania for the coal fields of western Pennsylvania. A Conrail GP40-2/SD40-2 combo is working hard to get to Cresson.

After Union Pacific closed Colorado’s Tennessee Pass as a through route on August 23, 1997, it still operated a one-a-week local from Pueblo to Malta, near Leadville for about eighteen months. On April 23, 1998, Cotton Belt EMD GP40-2 No. 7254 leads the Malta local along the Arkansas River between Vallie and Cotopaxi.

Four SD40Ns and a GP40-2 take the YSPMP back to the Belt from East Minneapolis. Pretty neat to see a quintet of standard cab EMDs powering a Class I train in 2022.

A CSX empty unit coal train highballs west at Low Moor, VA on Oct. 27, 1990, led by GP40-2 No. 6039.

CSXT GP40-2 #6393 leads local job A700 through the rolling countryside of northwest Georgia utilizing an ex SAL branch hence the milepost marking the distance to Richmond, VA. The ex RF&P EMD wasnt too bad either.

CSX freight R206 rolls across the bridge that spans the Big Sandy River and then drops the track back to ground level at Big Sandy Junction in Catlettsburg, Kentucky. It's a dreary Saturday morning as GP40-2 6420 leads the train towards the yard in Russell.

Brand new cats look good in fresh snow. Here's a fresh brand new Chessie GP40-2 sitting at Barr Yard, just after delivery from EMD in LaGrange. When clean, this paint scheme was amazing, a real eye catcher. This was taken in late January of 1978.

Rio Grande GP40-2 No. 3112 leads D&RGW train 242 along the Thistle Line Change the morning of May 26, 1988. The relocation still appears fresh, even though it opened for train traffic on July 4, 1983. The subsequent relocation of US Highway 6, including a deep cut through Billies Mountain, are at right above the train.

Chessie System GP40-2-GM50 is W/B on track one of the Washington Sub with an employee special. Note the E/B CPL signal just to the right of the last car.

On the weekend of September 24-5, 1983, two excursions were run on the B&O out of Baltimore. The grapevine said that the power was to be the former Clinchfield F-units, freshly painted in Seaboard System colors. The F’s were delayed getting to Baltimore, so they only ran on the Sunday excursion between Baltimore and Martinsburg via the Old Main Line.

The Saturday train, which I also believe ran from Baltimore to Martinsburg, but via the Metropolitan Subdivision, received a pair of Chessie GP40-2’s for power, and we were let down after an early morning drive down I-95. Since the excursion “only” had the Chessie units, we took one shot on Thomas Viaduct, and stuck around Baltimore to shoot other B&O action.

A westbound CSX empty unit coal train rolls through Teman, VA on the Piedmont Subdivision on Nov. 12, 1990 with GP40-2 No.6029 and two GP40's.

Approaching Tunnel 1, the Rio Grande Ski Train marches up the Moffat Tunnel Subdivision east of Plainview, Colorado, on the morning of January 7, 2001. Pinch-hitting for ailing F40PH No. 242 on today’s train is Rio Grande GP40-2 No. 3105.

A rare time of me being “tardy to the party” as I ventured out for my regular Harbor nonsense, I found this fella heading over Western Avenue just outside of Blue Island Yard. I rolled up to the north end of BI JCT with about seconds to spare and after noticing who was at the throttle, (an engineer who notoriously runs slow) I knew I could beat him to this very spot of the Pulaski Road bridge.

With that said, train BP2 beings their sunset trip west to Union Pacific’s Proviso Yard with the GP40-2/SD38-2 combo for power, IHB 4018 and IHB 3861. They’re seen here running at a brisk 15MPH passing through Alsip, IL at CP 173 on the IHB West Line, thankfully finding a pocket of light before the Pulaski Road bridge, while passing Iowa Interstate’s own XBISW20 transfer from the Harbor that’s parked on Main 3 with IAIS 512 (ES44AC). An eastbound Burlington Northern empty unit grain train pops out of Tunnel 4.0 near Belton, MT on June 7, 1990, led by GP40-2 No. 3521. We actually climbed on top of the tunnel portal to shoot a few westbounds. I was a lot younger and didn't break as easily as I do now.

Rio Grande GP40-2 No. 3104 leads D&RGW train No. 140 along the Mapleton Bench between Springville and Castilla, Utah, the afternoon of June 19, 1989. Second out in the power consist, CSX B30-7 No. 5504 joins in the pull to Soldier Summit. This four axle “baby boat” was built by GE for Seaboard System in March 1980.

FEC GP40-2 425 leads AFW1 back to the yard in Fort Pierce, FL after working and dropping ballast near Vero Beach, FL.

FEC 425 is one of two GP40-2s (the other being 436) that is painted in a special Susan G. Komen, Race for the Cure, Breast Cancer Awareness paint scheme. These units add a little splash of color to the typical blue shades of the GP40-2 roster.

The incomplete second main in the foreground has since been ballasted and placed into service.

SILOS & CPLs. Chessie System GP40-2-4288 & GP30-6957 are on the point of a W/B "bare table" train. They've just entered track one of the Philadelphia Sub at MP 84.5. The silos, paint scheme & CPLs are long gone. The US Rt. 40 overpass is in the distance.

GP40-2 303 leads Vermont Rail System’s Washington County Railroad train NPWJ south parallel to High Street in Barton, Vermont.

Northbound Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac manifest No. 412 swings across the crest of Rutherglen Hill at Rutherglen, VA on May 12, 1990 with GP40-2 No. 146 and five CSX units. Sadly, this shot is totally grown-in today, even where the photographer was standing. As information, those code line poles with the wires hanging off of them had been replaced by the microwave tower in the background.

Not too far behind the heals of the Southbound "Denali Star," the second-to-last Anchorage-bound State Fair Train of the evening makes its appearance along the Glenn Highway on the outskirts of Eklunta, AK.

A typical dreary fall afternoon along the Connecticut River in Vermont finds the Washington County's northbound WJNP rolling through the farmland at Newbury on Halloween. Recently the VRS finally swapped out the leaser that had been running around on the WACR for most of the summer, leaving VRS GP40-2 307, and CLP GP38-2 204 as the power up here.

Just before sunset, train BP2 crosses the Chicago Sanitary & Ship Canal at CP Canal in Summit, IL as they head west for Union Pacific’s Proviso Yard with the fan favorite GP40P-2, IHB 4010 in the lead and an IHB GP40-2 (4012) trailing. In the midst of crossing the former GM&O Diamond of the CN Joliet Sub, they’d once again cross another Diamond of the former Santa Fe, the BNSF Chillicothe Sub behind me at CP McCook. Taken: 5-26-23

The 4010 was once the Southern Pacific bicentennial unit (3197) and served as a commuter unit for their passenger service out of San Francisco in the mid 70s, hence “P” for the steam generator that was removed in the early 1980s. The last two SP GP40Ps remain on UPs roster to this very day.

A CSX GP40-2 and a former Richmond Fredericksburg and Potomac GP40 were tied down in the joint CSX/Canton Penn Mary yard in 1993.

In the background is a water tower with a GM logo dating back from when GM's Broening Highway General Motors Plant was still active.

At the time, the plant was assembling those dreadful Chevrolet Astro vans until the plant shut down in 2005.

In total, approximately 3,200,000 Astro vans were produced at the Baltimore plant.

The plant closed its doors after the final shift on May 13, 2005.

GM has since sold the site to the developer Duke Realty, which has demolished the old plant and rebuilt the site as an industrial park called the Chesapeake Commerce Center.

RF&P GP40-2-147, CSX/Seaboard System B23-7-3126, a CSX/Family Lines U23B-???? and two other unidentified RF&P GPs are crossing Jackson Station Road. They're on the point of W/B CSX train 171, better known as the "Orange Blossom Special", on CSX's Philadelphia Sub. The Winch Road overpass is in the distance.

Rio Grande GP40-2 No. 3099 and Amtrak F40PH units No. 333 and 323 pull a 15-car California Zephyr train No. 6 just outside the Thistle Tunnels in Spanish Fork Canyon the morning of June 11, 1984. The train is traversing a line change that bypassed the town of Thistle and a massive landslide which blocked the D&RGW, the Spanish Fork River, and US Highway 6. The new rail line opened for service on July 4, 1983.

A Baltimore & Ohio GP40-2 and a Chesapeake & Ohio B30-7 bring a train of empties through Danville, West Virginia. The S4 on the left belongs to the Southern Appalachian Coal Company (Julian Mines). It’s interesting that it is an as-built Alco, and not a Caterpillar re-engined “bug slug” more typical of mine power in the area.

After taking what seemingly felt like all day and giving us anxiety attacks watching our light fade and the shadows creepin, Indiana Harbor Belt train BP2 finally departed Blue Island Yard. IHB 3861 (SD38-2) and IHB 4018 (GP40-2) lead a UP SD70M and a UP SD70ACe as they slowly crawl around the corner northbound at 139th street in Blue Island, IL, beginning their journey to Union Pacific’s Proviso Yard along the IHB West Line at sunset.
