Near Grantown on Spey effluent discharge point Strathspey, Scotland. The freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margartifera population in this river is of international importance but is now reported to be in serious decline see: www.robedwards.com/2014/09/millions-of-pearl-mussels-wipe... . BSCG A small local conservation charity has opposed an inappropriate scale of urban development near the River Spey in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland's youngest National Park ( and the largest National Park in the British isles). Under European law this River is a Special Area of Conservation or Natura site. Wildlife supported by the River Spey in addition to freshwater pearl mussel includes European otter Lutra lutra and north Atlantic salmon Salmo salar. The oligotrophic pure waters of the River Spey are important for the whisky industry for which Strathspey is world famous. All donations to BSCG's legal fighting fund that is currently seeking to challenge housing allocations with implications for water quality in the River Spey (including a new town of 1,500 houses in the National Park) are gratefully received. BSCG is supporting advice that there should be tighter controls on pollutants allowed in the River Spey. It is probable that invasive Ranunculus weed growth detrimental to pearl mussels is favoured by mesotrophic conditions linked to sewage effluent and low flows that can be associated with water abstraction.

Goose grabbing / Ganzenrijden by larry_antwerp

Goose grabbing in Zandliet to determine the 2014 local champion of the local association called "Vermaak Na Arbeid" (pleasure after work).

The aim is to tear off the head off a (dead) goose on whilst riding on horse back. There are 6 associations in the north of Antwerp who all compete first for a local championship to become 'king'. Later all of these kings compete against each other to determine an emperor for a year.

From time to time there is an 'accident' where one of the riders falls of his horse. He is than taken care off by the 'nurse'. I had the feeling it was a set up ;-)
