Strathspey, Scotland. A single male capercaillie was observed, so it can be concluded these signs are fresh.

There has been fine weather in 2015 for the spring mating period for capercaillie. However concern for future of capercaillie in Scotland grows.

The core area for capercaillie in Scotland is currently the pinewoods of Strathspey where recreational disturbance is a growing problem that the National Park Authority planners and government conservation agency SNH show little sign of wanting to grasp. This is despite recent history.

It is reported that the National Park of Loch Lomond on the Trossachs has already lost a viable capercaillie population even from an area designated as a Special Protection Area for capercaillie and this in relatively recent years.

The capercaillie has been referred to as the "soul" of the Caledonian pinewood and Caledonian pinewood without capercaillie are all the poorer. Like the oak and the salmon capercaillie according to gaelic scholars have been viewed has having noble qualities.

Few questions are being asked about the desirability of promoting more and more outdoor recreation in sensitive pinewoods in the Cairnbgorms National Park Strathspey or the encouragement of more built development near to such sites where burgeoning development comes at a potentially severe cost to the very survival of capercaillie - a species considered once before around 1785 to have gone extinct in Scotland and also lost before this from Ireland. The original loss of this western population of capercaillie followed short sighted deforestation and certainly today habitat fragmentation ( that can be caused by human disturbance) is a concern for the future of this species in Scotland.
