Since 1991 when the cable ship Global Sentinel first set sail, she has installed thousands of miles of fiber-optic cables on the floors of oceans all over the world. No job was too big for the mighty Sentinel and her crew.
Now, off the coast of California, the CS Global Sentinel is being tasked with a very interesting installation— laying a new, first-of-its-kind power and fiber-optic cable. Specifically, a 10-kilowatt electrical power and fiber-optic cable for a power socket 52 kilometers into Monterey Bay, Calif. This will be the smallest yet one of the most important installations the ship has ever undertaken.
For decades, scientists who wanted to study ocean changes and sea conditions had to rely on batteries to power their instruments, which were relatively short-lived. Now, that is about to change, thanks to years of development by the Monterey Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), and financial support from the National Science Foundation.
In March 2007, the Global Sentinel and her crew will carefully lay 52 kilometers (32 miles) of power and fiber-optic cable the size of a garden hose in Monterey Bay. The cable will be laid from the shore end at Moss Landing to the resting place of a node about 3,000 feet beneath the waves, where various instruments can be plugged in and receive power on which to run and in turn send back live data via the fiber-optics to the shore station.
Called MARS, short for Monterey Accelerated Research System, this will allow scientists access 24 hours a day, seven days a week over long periods to study the ocean in real time. The cable will follow the shelf along the north side of the bay and be buried about a meter beneath the sea floor to minimize the impact to sea life in the area. At the end of the cable will be a five-ton node where up to eight different sensors of all types can be plugged into the system. Some of the sensors to be installed are quake sensors to detect earthquakes along the earth’s plates; another will be a low-light camera, to peer into the darkness of the deep. To plug in a system, scientists will send down an ROV (remote operated vehicle) and connect the instruments into the socket that sits permanently on the shelf in 900 meters (about 3,000 feet) of water.
The CS Global Sentinel is manned in all unlicensed departments by the SIU. Deck and engine officers are manned by the AMO, while ROV operators are from Tyco’s submersibles division. The various other technical personnel are from Tyco’s electronics divisions.
The MARS project is to serve as a test bed for more extensive ocean observatories in U.S. and Canadian waters. To learn more about the MARS project, you can visit www.mbari.org/mars
"Global pollution" är min tolkning till Fotosöndag och tema "Absurd",
Skorstenarna som spyr ut sin rök med gasmasken i mitten ska symbolisera det destruktiva och absurda sätt vi människor förgiftar och förstör jorden vi bor på.
"Global pollution" is my contribution to theme "Absurd" for the photogroup Photosunday.
The chimneys and the smoke aside the gasmask is a symbolic picture for the destructive and absurd way we people on earth is living today, which pollute and destroy the world we live in.

This image is comprised of data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) aboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellite (POES) series to map global vegetation cover. The vegetation covering the continents was recorded by the AVHRR aboard NOAA-7, NOAA-8, and NOAA-11. Dense vegetation is represented by shades of purple and green; sparse vegetation by shades of brown. The vegetation "index," an indicator of vegetation cover, is calculated by comparing reflected infrared light to reflected visible light for a specific area of land. NOAA's two operational polar orbiting satellites scan the entire earth once every six hours from altitudes of about 850km (529 miles). The data collected by the AVHRR sensor are held in the archives of the United States Geological Survey's EROS Data Center. The objective of the AVHRR instrument was to provide radiance data for investigation of clouds, land-water boundaries, snow and ice extent, ice or snow melt inception, day and night cloud distribution, temperatures of radiating surfaces, and sea surface temperature.
Due to the unusal high temperatures, spring is also here. One of the few good things of global warming (I guess)

it is important to remember that billions of people live in this world and that there exists thousands of other cultures, most of which are vastly different than yours. that does not mean they are lesser than you, nor does it mean they are better than you. explore. learn.

*Working Towards a Better World
We seem to be living in a precarious world in these times where we are afraid of one another, distrustful, not willing to work together, wanting to ignore the real global warming problem and seem to forget how we all belong to the human race and need to cooperate with one another in order to find mutual solutions for better and equal living for everyone. For this reason I wish to share my daughter's poem again, which she wrote beautifully for my painting Coming Together.
COMING TOGETHER
Asian, Latin, European, African,
Native, Indigenous, Foreign, Alien,
Descriptions that fall short,
vague splotches on the canvas of life.
All have but one heart that beats,
blood is but one color.
Flesh and Features, each unique
Organs and muscles, identical.
Each face a work of art
each mark distinctively it's own.
The beauty of our differences
far surpasses mere mortal comprehension.
Each unmatched culture,
its own vibrant combination of colors and sounds,
the pulsing of a nation, a people.
These different beats unite,
to make the music of our world.
As each exceptional voice blends with the other,
the harmony of humanity rises
high above the dark clouds of oppression and ignorance.
North, South, East, West,
a baby's cry is but the same.
The pang of hunger and indifference
changes not with skin color.
In the ears of every mother and father
every sister and brother
the cries of oppression should ring loud.
A call to action, a call to save our human family.
Our differences are but brush strokes on this canvas,
each unique in shape and color
when viewed together.....
form the masterpiece of mankind.
