I went out to check on Arby's parents, to see if they still had any young. The father was outside the cavity, looking in from all angles. They had been on the snag all day since I got Arby, pecking and looking around, as if they thought he was lost deep in the tree.
After I saw the male I went in and got my digiscoping gear, and was shocked at what I saw. A few days ago we had very carefully used a staple gun to attach a plastic bag around the bottom of the snag, carefully putting a staple in every nook and cranny to keep a rat snake from being able to get up the tree. Now I'm wondering if that's what all the commotion was about this morning, and if maybe the parent took him out of the nest. He doesn't have any marks on him like a crow grabbed him, and one of the parents was on the side of the tree when I went out to see who was on the ground. I'm just glad that the ladder wasn't tall enough to get him back in. There were no lumps in the snake, and I'm a little surprised that the RBW pair had only one nestling. Arby's eaten about 20 mealworms and 10 wild blueberries. I have my fingers crossed.
I just got the GH4 and was trying out the slow motion capability. This was shot by setting the camera to manual focus and focusing the scope as the bird moved. I love it when he sees a fish and spreads his "mane" and looks like a cobra. What a magnificent bird to watch!!! I also have to give credit to the TVC-33 and leveling base. I had to move numerous times during the filming of this video, and the leveling base let me quickly re-level the system on the uneven beach. This is also available in 1080p at vimeo.com/94473266

I often hear and see buzzards high above my garden and this is my third attempt at capturing one (not a great shot but it's better than just sky) and it is cropped. On this particular day there were two soaring on the thermals. A lovely sight.
