Water, Water Everywhere?

Helping IAEA Member States with Water Resources and Water Security

Water security – its availability, quality, management and protection – has become a critical issue in human development and environmental and economic sustainability, particularly in light of global population growth. Sustainable Development Goal #6 includes access to safe water for everyone by 2030. Statistics from the Global Water Institute, however, suggest that 700 million people worldwide could be displaced by intense water scarcity by 2030.

The outreach event

Water, Water Everywhere?

Helping IAEA Member States with Water Resources and Water Security

will discuss the various ways nuclear science and technology can help advance water management – improving water availability, optimising efficiency of water use, treating wastewater in an environment- friendly way and monitoring marine pollution.

My last strangers didn't want to have their names on the internet and participated on an anonymous basis. I think this is a quite German thing, the worries about the safety of our personal data, the need for privacy. As a German, I share those feelings to a certain degree; for instance, I like the idea that companies like Google as well as the government need to explain what they're doing with all the information they collect about us - but I also do think we're exaggerating sometimes. That's why I found the reaction of my next stranger very interesting – I might have reacted a little bit like he did.

Gerd passed by me near the main station. I turned around, caught up with him and asked for a photo. He wanted to know why and I explained the 100 strangers project.

What about my personal information, Gerd asked. I'd like to have your first name, that's all, I answererd, and, thinking about my last strangers, I quickly added: It's not even mandatory.

But my photo, he continued, my photo will be visible to everyone on the internet? Yes, it will, I said.

At that point, Gerd declined, saying he was in general cautious with his personal information and wouldn't want to have it on the internet. I asked him why he was concerned, it was only a photo and his first name, nothing more.

He changed his mind and agreed. When I took three quick shots he still didn't seem so sure about it and said, oh, well, I just hope this is a respectable thing. As respectable as art can be, I replied. Yes, he said, I don't have reason to believe you're fooling me.

As mentioned in a previous strangers photo I sometimes need to put on a suit for work, and as it happens, today I was wearing one. I'm pretty sure Gerd wouldn't have agreed to the photo if I had approached him in the more casual style I use to wear.

I gave Gerd my card and he asked me how the project got financed – an interesting question, nobody has asked me that before. I told him it didn't need to be financed, it's a private project.

Gerd, thanks a lot for trusting me on this one. As you can see, everything's just how I said it would be, so no need to worries. I would have loved to ask you what your plans were for the day but I didn't want to make you more uncomfortable than I already did. Anyway, I enjoyed our little encounter, so thanks again!
