This picture was taken as we were on our way to the Roaring Fork Motor Trail in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
According to the GSMNP website, Newfound Gap Road between Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Cherokee, North Carolina "is the only route that completely traverses the Great Smoky Mountains National Park." Scenic overlooks along this drive offer spectacular views of the Smokies. The overlook at Newfound Gap, where this shot was made, is the highest point along this drive. It is also a place where you can stand on the dividing line between Tennessee and North Carolina.

Looking south from my mountain perch late one night in Gatlinburg, TN. I'd like to say it was quiet but the amount of noise in the trees and underbrush was wild. Even when I lit my spotlight to see what was out there, nothing could be seen and quite often the silence would return for several seconds. The light in the foreground? Well, right in the middle of this long exposure a member of our party got up to use the bathroom so that is the golden hue in the bottom left. I could have masked it out, but left it. I noticed that "falling star" near the top of the image and decided that was as good as my night would get and packed my gear to go to sleep.

Bear Just Out of Hibernation on Cade's Cove Loop in the Great Smoky Mountains near Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
On the day I took this, there was a lady getting really close to the fence to take pictures of this bear when instead she should have been standing back and using her zoom lens. When the bear lunged toward the fence, she backed up real quick, and I was glad I was a good distance back already. Of course, a better zoom lens would make that less tempting, but that's no reason to tempt (or poke) the bear. :-)

The Sun set after 9pm in the mountains every night we were there. That late evening golden effect makes you want to pack up and leave Illinois...but that was until I heard about the Winter ice storms, no power, etc.. Time to revisit that dream.

Hello Flickr friends and family! Just got home this morning from a week in the Smoky’s and surrounding areas. Shows, pictures, shopping, family time, and lots and lots of driving. My husband and I stayed at the Clarion Inn in Gatlinburg TN last month to celebrate my Birthday and our Anniversary. It was a very nice place right on the edge of Gatlinburg.

As the day began to break at Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains, anticipation fluttered through my veins. The pre-sunrise silence enveloped me like a comforting embrace, heightening my excitement for what lay ahead. Standing atop this majestic peak, I gazed out at the vast expanse before me and was immediately captivated by its awe-inspiring beauty. The landscape stretched out as far as the eye could see, with rolling mountain ranges cascading into one another in a breathtaking symphony of colors. Shades of soft blue, orange and pink painted the horizon, gradually giving way to a warm golden hue that promised the arrival of the sun. With each passing moment, nature unveiled its quiet power, offering a remarkable vista that inspired wonder and reverence within me. This serene solitude combined with such a remarkable panorama awakened my spirit and left me eager to immerse myself in the splendor of this pristine wilderness.
