Virginia War Memorial

Shrine of Memory. At the south end of the Virginia War Memorial's Shrine of Memory stands a 23-foot marble statue of a woman, titled Memory, intended to reflect both sorrow and pride regarding those lost in battle during World War II and later wars; an eternal flame burns at her feet. When built in 1955, the Virginia War Memorial listed on the walls (glass to the east, marble and glass to the west) the names of Virginians killed in action (numbers in parentheses) in World War II (9,398) and Korea (850); those killed in action in Vietnam (1,379) were added in a 1981 addition to the north, while those killed in the Persion Gulf (7) were added in 1996. A more recent addition, extending back from the NE corner of the Shrine of Memory, is the Paul & Phyllis Galanti Education Center, whose offerings include museum displays and films. The War Memorial sits on Gambles Hill, between Belvidere Street (US 1 & 301) and 2nd Street, a short distance north of the James River; at the foot of Gambles Hill are the west end of the Richmond Canal Walk and the Civil War Center at the old Tredegar Iron Works. The buildings in the distance behind Memory are on the opposite side of the river.
I met Whisle at Virginia War Memorial in late afternoon last December, hoping for a starburst at sunset beside Memory statue, but sky was much more overcast than forecast; we stayed until after dark for shots with lights on the statue.

Joe holding a paper so Dave can rub Jerry Thompson's name; a fellow truck driver in Dave's unit, KIA during convoy April 28,1969. Jerry Thompson and Tommie Beavers stayed in their trucks after being hit and on fire to drive them out of the convoy route so the rest of the convoy could pass. Both trucks were hit by enemy fire, and were on fire after the trucks exploded (they were hauling fuel.) Both men were burned, but Jerry Thompson died the next day from his burns. Dave found out last year that Beavers survived his burns. When men don't return to the unit after being severely burned, you assume the worst. Dave was also driving JP4 (fuel) in that convoy. He had to drive past the burning trucks with his friends to get the fuel to the firebase. The road was hot, but the helicopters needed fuel and ammo, so they had to drive up anyway. The road was 'too hot' to return to base, but other truck drivers in other convoys were directed to brave the hot road to deliver the needed fuel. ~Even after Dave's convoy was ambushed.
3 MPs from the 720 MPs protecting the convoy were SGT Golembeuski, PFC Wilborn and SP/4 Mitchell should be credited with pulling several men to safety, out of burning vehicles and a downed helicopter. This convoy was under attack for 5 1/2 hours, until the 1st Infantry arrived to defend against the NVA. The road remained 'hot' for 2 days after the rest of the convoy made it to Quan Loi with the necessary JP4. Some of the other guys on the Wall next to Jerry's name were KIA defending that road, if not the same day of Dave's convoy, it was escorting or driving in other convoys. The men weren't allowed to use the road to return to their post until it was declared 'not hot.' Which for some of the men it was days later.
There were three helicopters that attempted to rescue men from the ambush, Eugene Parker was a gunner in a helicopter that was KIA during an attempt to rescue truckers that were hit in the convoy. Once a truck was hit, the driver had to stay in the cab until it was off the road. If the cab was on fire you stayed and burned as your buddies drove by and watched, because if they stopped to help; they would block the road leaving everyone in the ambush zone.

538 TRANSPORTATION CO. UNIT HISTORY
The 538 Transportation Company (petroleum operating) consisted of 5 officers and 166 enlisted men has consistently supported US and other free world forces in the struggle for freedom.
The 538 Transportation Company began it's history on 2 February 1940. It was activated at Camp Jackson, South Carolina on 1 August 1940. On 14 December 1942, this unit was reorganised and designated as Company B of the 48th Quartermaster Truck Regiment. During the following 5 years it was reorganised as the 3527th Transportation Corps Truck Company,on 1 August 1946; and on 30 June 1947 redesignated as the 538th Transportation Truck Company.
Following WWII, during which the 538th served in the East Indies, Papua, and New Guinea, it was inactivated on 21 March 1948 on Guam Island. On 11 June 1954 it was redisignated as the 538th Transportation Company. On 3 August 1954, the 538th was again activated at Camp Gordon, Georgia.
On 4 June 1966, the "Heavy Stickers" arrived in Vietnam and set up operation in Tanker Valley assigned to the 54th Quartermaster Battalion (Petroleum Operating).
Immediate milestones in the history of the 538th since it's arrival in Vietnam were the providing of direct support for operations Toledo, Attleboro, and Cedar Falls from 1 January 1967 to March 1967.
From those early beginnings in Vietnam to 4 June 1967, the 538th massed an impressive record. It hauled 68,910,000 gallons of fuel, over 1,195,847 combat gallons of bulk fuel products in support of combat operations in the Republic of Vietnam. In recognition of this feat, the 538th was honored as "Unit of the Day".
During the year 1969 the 538th was under the outstanding command of CPT. Carl H. Sayler and CPT. David M. Galanti respectively.
On April 28th 1969 the 538th experienced it's first casualty of the new year with the ambush of the Quan Loi Convoy. The convoy [company] suffered one KIA and three WIA while losing five vehicles. SP/4 Jerry Thompson died two days later after the ambush from burns suffered when he heroically drove his burning JP-4 tanker off the road so that his comrades could pass out of the kill zone.
On 10 December 1969 the company underwent a rocket attack, but fortunately no personnel were injured or equipment damaged.
In 1969 the company supported a school building project near Tan Son Nhut airfield. Members of the company voluntarily laid the foundations and made all the bricks necessary to construct a four room school building. The project was started in April and school began operating in November.
In November, the 538th received a Meritorious Unit Citation streamer for distinguished service with the 64th Quartermaster Battalion for the period of June 1966, to August 1968. Also in August the 538th was selected as Honor Company in Competition with 16 other companies of the 53rd General Support Group.
