Last night we visited it was a dull day, this time it was gorgeous.

After having captured some shots further south down the train, I walked up to the north end of the San Joaquin Valley Railroad's 619 Job to capture some photos of the head end. On point of the train was KLW SE24B number 2410, the latest KLW to join the SJVR's roster at this time and also the only one of these engines on the railroad that had not been vandalized at the time of taking this photo. I was originally going to do a shot looking down upon the nose of the train, but the intense headlights made it had to get an exposure from that angle, so I improvised and set up a bit behind the cab to capture the headlights cutting through the dusty Valley skies and illuminating a row of Italian Cypress. Soon the train would conclude its air test and continue into the night, towards Ivanhoe, where the train would pick up additional cars from a transloading facility.

The pretty little village of Wiveton is situated in the north of Norfolk, southwest of Cley-next-the-Sea. The parish has a long history and was established by the time of the Norman Conquest. It is detailed in the Domesday Book of 1086. As is the case with so many English villages the church is now the oldest building remaining.

The Church of St Mary has a 14th century tower and chancel, but pieces of reused stonework suggest an earlier church existed. The nave, aisles and porches date to the mid to late 15th century, and further restorations were carried out during the 17th to 19th centuries.

When I visit cities like Madrid, Tenerife, Shanghai, Miami, Naples, or right here in Barcelona, and I have my camera in hand, I can't resist taking photos like this one, where what triggered me to take it was the simple fact that it was a perfect outfit to tour Madrid. When I saw that blouse and that hat, my mind said, what style this girl has, and without further ado I capture her, always with the most sincere respect.

Mohave Point has a fine view of the near vertical, 3,000 foot high cliffs that encircle The Abyss and continue towards Pima Point, two miles west. Beyond, further to the west, are three of the next points (Yuma, Cocopa, Havasupai), fading into the distance. Below the huge cliffs, about half a mile of river is visible, including Boucher Rapids and Granite Rapids, at the end of Monument Creek which occupies most of the near ground. In the east, the ridge extending from Hopi Point blocks some of the canyon, so the panorama starts with Bright Angel Canyon on the North Rim, and includes Ninetyone Mile Creek, Trinity Creek and Ninteyfour Mile Creek. Directly below Mohave Point is a distinctive red sandstone mesa with jagged edges, known as The Alligator.

It seems like only yesterday that my eldest started uni.....driving through bus lanes with the car packed full......I've consoled myself that from various points in the Wirral I can kind of see him over there....well the general direction of where he'll be!

But as this academic year draws to an end and Masters beckons he'd decided on a totally different part of the country .......I'm taking it as new places for me to explore too - obviously bringing his favourite foods in a survival hamper along :)

With still no television in sight at Painted Valley Farm, after you're done watching the vintage dresses hanging on the wall and admiring the carnations, you can further look around your favorite haunt.

An adult Escambia Waterdog from a tributary of the Yellow River in southern Alabama.

This species was split from the N. beyeri lineage, which now represents populations in rivers and drainages west of the Perdido River. As adults, this species has few dark spots along the back and tail and an unspotted nose as well as a light unspotted belly. Because Necturus are completely aquatic, there are very few opportunities for dispersal and gene flow between populations. N. beyeri is thought to have several possible lineages that require further study.

Teilhard says we can further God’s project not only by our activities but also by how we deal with daily passivities of diminishment as well as those endured while suffering and dying. What does Jesus do with the energy he spends in suffering physical pain, emotional rejection, and spiritual pain? What is its purpose? Is it purely a waste? Can the energy spent enduring these things be used to benefit the growth of the kingdom of God? Teilhard answers yes.1 That is what Jesus teaches us on the cross. The energy being spent in enduring passivities, just as the energy being spent in performing activities, may be directed to energize God’s project by one’s intention. In the kingdom, no energy need be wasted. Even the energy endured in unwelcome passivities may be directed to contribute to God’s project. Teilhard sees Jesus doing precisely this. God’s will is always to promote the growth of the kingdom. Jesus’s prayer is, “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth….” This is the meaning of all martyrdom. One willingly undergoes martyrdom to help the growth of God’s kingdom, not merely to save one’s soul. In Teilhard’s terminology, one acts and does good deeds to help accomplish God’s work on Earth by one’s activities of growth. One transforms suffering and passivities to help accomplish God’s work on Earth by one’s activities of growth. One dies—a passivity—to help accomplish God’s work on Earth by turning it into an activity of growth.

Further up the Nile is the city of Aswan. (The Nile flows north.) The Aswan Dam is nearby as is Abu Simbel, but the city itself has a very interesting landmark, the old Victorian hotel, called the Old Cataract Hotel. Famous writers have stayed here like Agatha Christie and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

I heard that the hotel's afternoon tea was an experience not to miss so one of the days when I was there I indulged myself and watched the feluccas sail by on the Nile. This is the sight I saw as I left the hotel. The lights of a local mosque and the lovely street lights adorning the drive way of the old hotel were leading the way into the night scenes of Aswan.

Took some shots at the Ocean reef marina development again. The new reclaimed land for the Marina is starting to be built on. I always find the simplicity of the water, sky and sea wall elements make for striking photos. On this day the clouds were also making an appearance and added further interest. The colours are always amazing here and the water is mostly a silty yellow/green colour which is best seen when I use the polariser to get rid of the glare. In these shots you can see the effects of varying amounts of polarisation.

The town hall of Oñati has been a Historic Artistic Monument of the Province of Gipuzkoa since 1964, and its work is considered one of the most important of the Civil Baroque in the whole of the Basque Country. If the University of Oñati, built under the patronage of Mercado de Zuazola, can be compared with the most important Renaissance universities of the time, the Town Hall, although chronologically not the first of these characteristics, is a constant reference point for its workmanship, location and beauty.

The municipal building, built between 1764 and 1783, was designed by Martín de Carrera, with Francisco de Echánove collaborating in the construction process, who was in charge of the stonework, and Francisco de Cortaberría and Miguel de Sarazíbar in charge of the carpentry. The more than notable ironwork was carried out by José de Labroche, Joaquín de Arbe and Ventura Jubiondo, with the design of the seating in the main hall corresponding to Manuel Martín de Carrera. Despite the death of the architect Martín de Carrera on 31 August 1768, the work was carried out normally and was delivered within the established time frame.

The Town Hall of Oñati is a free-standing building from the late Baroque period, located at one end of the square, between Zumalacárregui and Barria streets, with a strong urban feel. The ashlar stone building has a rectangular floor plan, access through arcades and two floors and a hipped roof. Its main façade has a simple composition and exquisite decoration with outstanding stonework and carving that gives the building added value. Four giant pillars raised on small bases, go from the ground to practically the cornice and run vertically along the façade, symmetrically arranging the composition in three floors. At ground level, the arcades open out and give access to the portico through three basket-shaped arches, slightly set back from the pillars, which increases the movement of the façade. The upper floors have six moulded openings, three for each height, corresponding to the balconies, around which the rich decoration is concentrated: rocailles, lancets, split curved pediments, rosettes, cartouches, mouldings, foliage, plant elements, scallops, corbels, hanging garlands, small decoration... On the other hand, the wrought iron work on the balconies and the staircase is of magnificent workmanship, based on rocailles, cut metal flowers, geometric shapes with wavy interplays and rounded lines in movement. The decorative abundance continues in the central section with the coat of arms, which breaks the eaves leaving it as a pediment. Finally, five pinnacles on the roof coinciding with the façade bands, further increase the decorative aspect. The interior is made of conglomerate and is accessed through the arches covered with plastered groin vaults. Below them is the main door leading to a large one-flight staircase, which after the landing becomes a double staircase. The stairwell is covered with a small blind drum and a small dome with segments. The large assembly hall has three entrance doors, coinciding with the balconies on the façade. The side façades are made of ashlar stone on the first floor and the rest of plastered masonry. The variety of uses; court, residence, archive, market, prison… seems to have characterised the first years of activity of this unique building, whose popularity makes us forget other town halls of a similar composition that lack its elegance.

This has been more of a spur of the moment stop to walk and hike this area in Death Valley National Park. I'd read about the polished rocks and layers, but as I walked further in, I found myself drawn to the peaks on this north side of Tucki Mountain. Then a raven flew overhead...no, soared above me. I was barely able to capture the image I did. What I liked about it was the canyon and walls around me with the mountains peaks off in the distance. Above all this was a raven just taking it all in...

Just seven and half kilometers south of Fira, a different side of Santorini emerges, an aspect that harkens back to the picturesque Greek villages of yesteryear. Here, the pace of life is more relaxed; cats stroll in the alleys, families dress up in their Sunday best to go to church, and piano lessons can be heard through the open windows of the cultural society. The main square, with its tall pine trees and quaint little coffee shops, is the focal point for socializing and entertainment. Regardless of the season, its busiest time is noon, when people gather for ouzo or Santorinian beer accompanied by excellent local meze.

This is Pyrgos, the largest preserved village on Santorini and the island’s former capital. Strategically built in the heart of the pre-volcanic hinterland and at the foot of Mt Profitis Ilias, Pyrgos affords panoramic views. Yet, located that bit further from the famous caldera, it has been spared the terraces, balconies, infinity pools and master suites that adorn the glossy covers of tourist magazines the world over. Pyrgos is not swamped by sunset spotters, nor is it the first choice among the hordes of cruise-ship passengers. Its charm is different: more subdued, less picture-perfect, little advertised.

Ask the locals what the difference is between Pyrgos and the rest of the island in terms of social profile, and you’ll get conflicting answers. For some, it’s that the villagers are more cultivated and more united among themselves, while for others, it’s that its location has kept the village relatively untouched – at least for now – by the tourist industry that is flourishing on the island.

It is a fact, however, that on Palm Sunday, as I was going up to the top of the medieval Kasteli (castle), I was overcome with emotion. The historic Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary (1660), one of Santorini’s largest and most important places of worship, was welcoming the faithful for the first time after a lengthy restoration: its masterful pulpit and intricate woodcarved altarpiece have been fully restored after centuries of wear and tear.

If you feel inclined to visit Pyrgos, get your climbing shoes on. This is the only way to explore the Pyrgos Kasteli, the best preserved of the five Venetian castles that once adorned the island. Don’t worry about getting lost; just head uphill from the main square and you’ll find it, a fortress hamlet that started life as a monastery and grew in size after the arrival of the Venetians at the beginning of the 13th century.

Spring foliage growing in the hills of Santa Clara County.

This little intimate landscape vignette comes from a rural county park not far from where I live. I’ve hiked this location for several decades. It is one of my go-to places for quick doses of nature, as I can go there and get in a good hike between breakfast and lunch. Most of the park consists of rather open oak and grassland country, but there are places in the lowlands where things can be quite lush and green at the right times of the year, especially during California’s early spring “impossibly green” season.

I love traveling to more distant landscapes as much as anyone — going to places that seem more rugged and further from the civilized world. But over the years I’ve come to treasure the more local landscapes, too. Admittedly, I’m blessed by living less than an hour from redwood groves and the Pacific Ocean, and only a few hours from the Sierra. But much closer and seemingly less spectacular locations abound here, too.
