When completed in 1902 it was the tallest building in the world at 22 stories.

It is surrounded by 5th Ave., Broadway and E23rd Street and was originally called the Fuller building after the construction company that owned it. But it soon became known as the Flatiron building due to its unusual shape that looked like an iron.

The Flatiron Building, or Fuller Building as it was originally called, is located at 175 Fifth Avenue in the borough of Manhattan, and is considered to be one of the first skyscrapers ever built. Upon completion in 1902 it was one of the tallest buildings in New York City. The building sits on a triangular island block at 23rd Street, Fifth Avenue, and Broadway, anchoring the south (downtown) end of Madison Square.

The neighborhood around the building is called the Flatiron District after its signature building, which has become an icon of New York.

Looking toward 5th Ave. on 57th St., Manhattan, I will look up some of the building names: www.nysonglines.com/57st.htm I think I can see down to the 40 story Fuller Building and 52 story Four Seasons Hotel which are both Art Moderne so I will have to go back to them another time!

Then, as always, real estate in New York was precious, and every plot was used to its fullest- which in the case of the triangular property of the Flatiron, gave the structure its full-known and revolutionary shape.

View south at Fifth Avenue and East 23rd Street toward the Flatiron Building under construction, 1902.

We spent a day at Mrgashat village volunteering with Fuller Center for Housing Armenia working shoulder to shoulder with the partner family to lay the concrete for three rooms.

Originally the Fuller Building

The Flatiron Building (175 Fifth Avenue); a 20-storey building constructed 1901-2. The architect was Daniel Burnham (1846-1912), of the architectural firm D. H. Burnham & Company.

The building was designed to be the headquarters of the Fuller Company, originally it was named the Fuller Building, but the Flatiron came from a nickname that stuck.

We spotted the deco crown of this building from a few blocks away. My shot of the top is kind of meh, but I think this image of the base is a little better. This article on the building's history has some detail images (actually, mine's a little better).
