2012

Yesterday, 30 March 2015, I went SE of Calgary, driving the backroads through the farmlands. I had been meaning to drive further than I'd driven in that area, and yesterday went as far as Vulcan. Just like I have done a few times before, I went on Google and Google Earth beforehand, searching for any barns that were in the new part of my drive. Nothing truly spectacular, but I did manage to find a few that made the drive worthwhile. 234 km total, 5 1/4 hour trip.

As you can see in this photo, the weather was beautiful, with a sky full of clouds for at least part of my drive. What you can't see is that it was very windy, as it so often is in this area. You also can't see all the bees that were buzzing round my car a couple of times when I got out to take a few photos.

My daughter e-mailed me an Alberta Emergency Alert notice this evening, about a grassfire SE of Calgary. Actually, the Alert ended about 10 minutes ago. Yesterday, I was driving just a matter of minutes south of the fire area. A good job I went yesterday and not today.

"Fire crews have brought a large grassfire near Blackie under control.

The Municipal District of Foothills had declared a local state of emergency due to concerns about the fire, which is burning northeast of the hamlet of Blackie.

An alert issued by Alberta Emergency Alert indicated the fire is burning near 482nd Avenue and 304th Street East and is moving quickly due to the high winds.

“Winds in the area are gusting at high speed and shifting direction,” the alert reads. “People are asked to avoid the area and prepare for possible evacuation. Smoke may severely reduce visibility and create hazardous road conditions.”

The Volkswagen Golf Mk1 was Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign and launched in 1974 the right hand drive models going on sale Great Britain from October 1974 The Golf was the the successor to the Beetle, and marked a shift of its major car lines from rear-wheel drive and rear-mounted air-cooled engines to front-wheel drive with front-mounted, water-cooled engines

VW Press Department head Anton Konrad and VW engineer Alfons Löwenberg began development of a higher performance variant, they were joined by suspension expert Herbert Schuster, Hermann Hablitzel, along with Jürgen Adler (chassis developement) and Horst-Dieter Schwittlinsky from the marketing department who coined the GTI acronym, The GTI was presented to Volkswagen’s management early in 1975 for approval the GTi finally debuted at the 1975 Frankfurt Motorshow with an expectation of building just 500 units to qualify for the Group One Production Touring Car class. The GTI appeared on the British market in 1977 as a special order only in left-hand drive form. A factory right-hand drive version finally became available in July 1979, priced at £4705

The early GTi was powered by 1588cc fuel injected engine of 110 PS (108 hp; 81 kW). Externally the car was distinguished black-plastic wheel arch extensions, wider wheels, a larger front spoiler, a matte-black frame around the backlite and a red frame for the grille, ride height was lowered by 15mm and the standard car's solid front brake discs were replaced with 9.4 in (239 mm) ventilated discs. Anti-roll bars were also fitted front and rear. With a curb weight of 810 kg (1,786 lb), the GTI could accelerate from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 9.2 seconds. Top speed was 182 km/h (113.1 mph) a five speed gearbox became standard in August 1979

In 1982 for the 1983MY the engine was enlarged to 1781cc and compression increased power rose to 112 PS (110.5 hp)

I have so far not found much history on the Dirt Hills, but I find the region absolutely fascinating. It is so different from what people expect in southern Saskatchewan. The perspective from an airplane only fuels my desire to explore them more.

"Fuel-grade coke is classified as either sponge coke or shot coke morphology. While oil refiners have been producing coke for over 100 years, the mechanisms that cause sponge coke or shot coke to form are not well understood and cannot be accurately

predicted."

Probably one of the biggest surprises of the day was what looks to be a brand new Burrtec Octo!!

I needed to run some wires from the dash to behind the seat so off came the fuel tank. Was actually easier than I expected to get it on and off. Even more surprising was that I didn’t blow up the bike afterwards 😊 It even runs 😊
