(RPI MusicNews) - The Legendary Fringe Parade have just released their 5th album on Handsome Hampster Records. RPI Music critic Alice Andermouse caught up with the band on the road - literally - between gigs and filed this interview with frontman Chris Fallingswoon and guitarist Dab Freemont somewhere near the Ohio-Pennsylvannia border.

RPI: I can't help but note that we're conducting this interview inside of a cargo container/mobile rehearsal space barreling down the PA Turnpike on the back of a semi. I have to say, this is the most unusual place I've ever interviewed a band. In a word - Why?

Fallingswoon: We did the whole van/micro-bus thing for years. And as you know - it pretty much sucks, especially if you're basically on permanent tour like we are. One night, we were playing around with an ice cube tray. We were pretty baked and we started really getting into the whole thing from a design concept. I mean REALLY getting into it. To make a long story short, we ended up inventing a new type of ice cube tray that's really taken off in Japan and several islands throughout Indonesia.

Freemount: What he's trying to say is that we're basically filthy rich.

RPI: If you're rich, why not get a big tour bus? Why this?

Fallingswoon: Why not? When we started playing together, we couldn't really afford rehearsal space. We had a buddy who was a longshoreman on the Philly waterfront. So we ended up rehearsing in an old cargo container. In fact, it's the one we're sitting in now. Once the royalty checks on the tray started rolling in, we modified it, and mounted it on a semi.

Freemont: It's great because it's like being at home, even though we're on the road. We can work things out and practice whenever we want. We also have a digital 16-track - basically a whole studio right on board in case we want to sketch some things out.

Fallingswoon: In fact, we recorded most of the new record right here. I think we were on a swing down through Alabama and Florida at the time.

RPI: Speaking of the new record, can I ask you about the title. Founding Flowers?

Fallingswoon: Well, you hear an awful lot about the people who founded things. Our Founding Fathers. George Washington - he founded our country. Clara Barton - she founded the Red Cross. Al Gore - the Internet.

Freemont: Bill Gates - the whole binary number system.

Fallingswoon: Exactly. But what about the founders of flowers?

RPI: The inventors of flowers?

Fallingswoon: No. The founders of flowers.

Freemont: The people who planted the flowers. Planters of flowers. No one knows who they are. You don't see them noted in history books. And yet they're there.

RPI: Wouldn't they just be professional or amateur horticulturalists?

Fallingswoon: Can you name me one?

RPI: Off the fop of my head? No. But they exist.

Fallingswoon: Do they? You say they do, but do they? Who is the George Washington of that set? There is none. See? But it's not really the people who plant the flowers. If we wanted to highlight them, we could have called the record "Fanfares for the Flower Planters".

Freemont: Which we thought of.

Fallingswoon: We did. But in the end, we want to emphasize the act itself - founding flowers. I guess it's more of a mindset really. If you're out there founding flowers, you're not beating your children. You're not cheating on your spouse.

Freemont: It would be difficult. Although, from a fetishistic perspective, not necessarily impossible. Not that there's anything wrong with it.

Fallingswoon: Actually, there may be.

RPI: Because of your sound, you tend to get lumped in with a lot of the Elephant 6 bands like the Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, the Apples in -

Fallingswoon: Look, we're not Elephant 6. I love those bands, but we're not at all affiliated with them.

Freemont: We wanted to be. We wanted to join the Elephant 6 collective, but our inquiries went unanswered.

RPI: Inquiries?

Fallingswoon: We wanted to know whether the elephant in question was an African elephant or an Asian elephant. We kept writing them, but they kept ignoring us.

Freemont: Why the big mystery? Made us very suspicious.

RPI: Couldn't you just look at the CD label and see what type of elephant it was?

Fallingswoon: We could have. But it's the principle of the thing.

RPI: Is that a siren?

Freemont: Shit, rollers. We're going to have to be very, very, VERY quiet for a while.

Radhi is the frontman of the band OAG. He rocks on stage and off stage. He has a plush lion who appeared on the cover of one of their albums... so he is able to take me seriously when we first met. I hope he brings his lion the next time he comes to Kuching!
