Abstract Series 48 - The Mark Sandman Tribute Concert

Boston to honour Mark Sandman with memorial concert on Sunday

Members and fans of the Boston music community will come together on Sunday to honor the memory of Mark Sandman, the late frontman of famed rockers Morphine. A memorial concert will take place at Pacific Park in Cambridge (at Sidney and Pacific Streets) from 1 to 7 p.m. with a parade/procession beginning at Mark Sandman Square (at the Middle East in Central Square) at 12:30 p.m. Performing Sandman's music at the free concert will be his former bandmates now in Orchestra Morphine, Elastic Waste Band and Treat Her Right. Local outfits Zili Misik, Mean Creek, Rite Hook, Faces on Film, Mariachi Internationale and Mickey Bones will also perform.

The concert marks the 10th anniversary of Sandman's death and comes just three days after what would have been his 57th Birthday. The Morphine singer/bassist and co-founder of Hi-N-Dry Records died of a heart attack after collapsing on stage at the Nel Nome del Rock festival in Palestrina, Italy on July 3, 1999. As well as celebrating the life and work of one of the city's favorite sons of the local music scene, the Memorial Concert will focus attention on the Mark Sandman Music Project, based in the newly renovated Arts in the Armory building in Somerville. The Music Project is a not-for-profit, community-based organization which seeks to foster recreational, education and artistic goals by expanding young people’s opportunities to participate in music.

The concert site will include a fund-raising store selling CDs donated to the Music Project by musicians from across the country. Harmonix, who will have a Beatles Rock Band stand at the Festival and will raffle products. All proceeds will go to the Music Project. An online auction is also being administrated by charitybuzz.com.

To coincide with the memorial concert, Hi-N-Dry Records is offering a variety of tribute songs and other Sandman-related tracks on the label's website. This week's offering is a recording of Morphine's "Honey White" by Les Claypool with Morphine members Billy Conway, Jerome Deupree and Dana Colley. All current week downloads are free but fans are to make a donation to the Sandman Project in whatever amount they think is reasonable

”Come on, New York City, we didn’t come back from the dead for this!” Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke chided the stock-still crowd two songs into the U.K. band’s set at Terminal 5 on Aug. 7. The taut, hit-strewn performance was the first of three nights headlining the venue in support of new album “Four” (Aug. 21, Frenchkiss Records), and marked the self-proclaimed resurrection of a group that was rumored to be breaking up less than a year ago.

In an interview with British publication NME last September, the group suggested that Okereke was continuing his explorations as a solo artist after the release of his 2010 debut, “The Boxer,” and that the three other members were looking for a replacement. Okereke, who was recording “Four” with bandmates Russell Lissack, Gordon Moakes and Matt Tong in New York when the rumors took root, now says the whole thing was a practical joke somehow taken as a serious matter. “They printed it without any ironic slant, so it kind of became this big story,” Okereke says.

As ridiculous as the breakup whispers were, the singer/guitarist admits that Bloc Party wasn’t quite right following the release of its dance-oriented third album, 2008’s “Intimacy” (85,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan), and its accompanying tour. The quartet had released three albums in four years, all on London-based indie Wichita Recordings, including 2005 debut “Silent Alarm,” which earned critical raves and sold 379,000 U.S. copies, with domestic distribution by Vice/Dim Mak/Atlantic. The studio productivity mixed with relentless touring left the band in need of distance and, in 2009, Bloc Party effectively shut down as Okereke started work on an electronica-focused solo set.

“If I hadn’t recorded ‘The Boxer,’ there’s no way we would’ve been able to have made this record. We might not have been able to make another record,” Okereke says. “The Boxer” (also on Wichita and distributed by Glassnote), which has sold 9,000 U.S. copies since its June 2010 release, gave Okereke an outlet for his interest in dance music, so that when the band reconvened last year with producer Alex Newport, they were ready to make an album with the guitar-heavy sound of “Silent Alarm” but also a dirtier, garage-rock feel.

“I don’t think we would’ve gone into ‘Four’ wanting to make a completely stripped-down rock record if I hadn’t had the choice to explore ideas opposite to that in ‘The Boxer,’” Okereke says. “To me, these records are all very connected.”

After signing to Frenchkiss in March, the band announced the new full-length in May and immediately began a marketing assault. Label GM Paul Hanly says the band was “very involved with every part of the campaign,” from the promotion of first single “Octopus” to the global album stream on its official site the week before street date to the Bloc Party iTunes app that features photos, live updates and the band members providing weather “Fourcasts” in custom videos.

“When we started having those initial meetings with them, we saw the excitement they had about this music, and about being a part of [the Bloc Party] family again,” Hanly says.

The act returned to the stage in the weeks before Four’s release with high-profile performances at HARD Fest in Los Angeles, Lollapalooza in Chicago and Outside Lands in San Francisco, among other dates. A fall U.S. trek begins Sept. 14 in Boston, and Hanly says the group will hit the road throughout 2013. “They’re prepared to tour relentlessly on this [album],” he says.

Meanwhile, Okereke says the equilibrium he’s found by making rock records with Bloc Party and more experimental fare as a solo artist will continue as well. “The one thing I learned from making ‘The Boxer’ is that I can do anything I want,” he says. “That’s not to say that I’ll make another electronic record. If I want to make a country record or a soul record, I can, because I’m only limited by my imagination.”

Playing host to the rescheduled Foo Fighters concert at Wembley (that was cancelled after frontman Dave Grohl broke his leg falling off stage at a show in Gothenburg, Sweden), the National Bowl in Milton Keynes came alive on Sunday, September 6, 2015 with the sound of 65,000 screaming fans. Following sets from rock duo Royal Blood and the eclectic propo-punk icon Iggy Pop, the Foos knew they had to deliver. From the moment the curtain sucked into a black hole vortex to the end of the show, it was obvious it was going to be one hell of a night to remember. Debra, Karl and I had arrived relatively early for the show and, being among the first to enter the MK Bowl, were offered "Inner Pit" passes. Issued on a first-come-first-serve basis, these gave fenced-off access to the stage and were an excellent surprise. We had a great view of the day's action and I was well positioned for photographs. "All My Life" opened the two and a half hour set, with Grohl spending the entire show seated on a most gloriously over-the-top throne, designed by Grohl himself and adorned by guitar necks. It transported the front-man up and down the runway, and was in itself a crowd pleaser! I have wanted to see the Foo Fighters for about two decades - and desperate to do so since "Wasting Light"- and they did not disappoint. A shredding version of "White Limo" alone justified the ticket price, and the rest was a wonderful (and sometimes nostalgic) tour through their back-catalogue. All in all, it was a triumphant, heart-warming singalong set that showed why, for so many, the Foo Fighters have been the soundtrack to the last two decades. Here's the Foo Fighters' set list for the Milton Keynes "Broken Leg" concert.

If I was desperate to see the Foo Fighters, I was absolutely aching to see 69 year old rock legend, Iggy Pop. I narrowly missed one of his gigs in Amsterdam at the end of 1978 and, after this initial disappointment, Iggy stayed on my Bucket List through the late-80's in London, the 90's in Prague and the naughties in the UK. When he was in town, I was always travelling, had other commitments or just had bad luck (i.e. the cancellation of the Foo's concert at Wembley in June where Iggy was on the supporting bill). Well, I finally got to see James Newell Osterberg, Jr. in full, topless, action in Milton Keynes on a fine evening in September 2015! Iggy brought his old school punk snarl to the party, prompting mass singalongs to classic tunes, some of which he penned with his old mate David Bowie in Berlin in the 70's. If I'm still as active as Iggy when I'm almost 70, I'll be more than happy! He made fine use of the runway before him, skipping, kicking, twisting and turning as only Iggy can. He took a breather every now and then, but Iggy still has more energy than any new breed act you care to mention. Fucking hell - he's the man that wrote "Lust for Life"! The snot-noses in the audience didn't know what hit them :-) FYI, here's the Iggy Pop's set list for the night.

A wonderful, sunny day and balmy evening with my family, and a fine way to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of my first date with my future-wife on September 7, 1983.

Back in the 80s, soon after he left school - the very talented young guitarist Neal Whitmore joined Sigue Sigue Sputnik-then one of the most popular British electro/punk/rock band.

He almost immediately blended in with the bands shocking stage image-sporting multicoloured Mohican, stilettos and fetish gear!

As Tony often said in the past, that; "Members of this band were selected solely on image and appearance.

During the early days of the phenomenal success of SSSputnik, Neal X enjoyed every part of it- and to this days, there is no regrets!!

"Sputnik were hot sensation then! We travelled the world and had an amazing time!" says Neal-with some pride in his voice.

"But then, years later we had a swift fall from grace!" he laughed.

Following the departure of the original frontman Martin Degville, (or him walking out on them), in the last attempt to save 'what's left of the bands legacy', Neal X took over as the lead singer of Sputnik for a few years.

But despite his great tendency to replace the -very feisty, eccentric and often outrageous stage persona of Martin Degville, in the long run - it was hard to please and persuade the fiercely loyal SSSputnik fans.

He has also worked as a sideman for people like Pete Burns, Johny Thunders, Adam Ant, Marc Almond and more.

This days, (beside his longtime fascination with Burlesque girls) formally known Neal X, actively working on many of his new music ventures - like creating music for children and collaborating with various other music artist..

And he is not shy to admit that he is loving every minute of it!
