Freddie Mercury (born Farrokh Bulsara; 5 September 1946 – 24 November 1991) was a British singer and songwriter who achieved global fame as the lead vocalist and pianist of the rock band Queen. Regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music, he is known for his flamboyant stage persona and four-octave vocal range. Mercury defied the conventions of a rock frontman with his theatrical style, influencing the artistic direction of Queen.
Born in 1946 in Zanzibar to Indian parents from the Parsi community, Mercury attended British boarding schools in India from the age of eight and returned to Zanzibar after secondary school. In 1964, his family fled the Zanzibar Revolution, moving to Middlesex, England. Having previously studied and written music, he formed Queen in 1970 with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. Mercury wrote numerous hits for Queen, including "Killer Queen", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Somebody to Love", "We Are the Champions", "Don't Stop Me Now" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". His charismatic stage performances often saw him interact with the audience, as displayed at the 1985 Live Aid concert. He also led a solo career and was a producer and guest musician for other artists.
Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987. He continued to record with Queen, and was posthumously featured on their final album, Made in Heaven (1995). In 1991, the day after publicly announcing his diagnosis, he died from complications of the disease at the age of 45. In 1992, a concert in tribute to him was held at Wembley Stadium, in benefit of AIDS awareness.
As a member of Queen, Mercury was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004. In 1990, he and the other Queen members received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. One year after his death, Mercury received the same award individually. In 2005, Queen were awarded an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors. In 2002, Mercury was voted number 58 in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons.
Early life
Zanzibar and India
Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara in Stone Town in the British protectorate of Zanzibar (now part of Tanzania), in East Africa on 5 September 1946.[2][3] He was born with four extra incisors, to which he later attributed his enhanced vocal range.[4][5] His parents, Bomi and Jer Bulsara, were Indian Gujarati Parsi, from western India.[a] He had a younger sister, Kashmira (b. 1952).[7][8][9]

The family had moved to Zanzibar so that Bomi could continue his job as a cashier at the British Colonial Office. As Parsis, the Bulsaras practised Zoroastrianism.[10] As Zanzibar was a British protectorate until 1963, Mercury was born a British subject, and on 2 June 1969 was registered a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies after the family had emigrated to England.[11]
Mercury spent most of his childhood in India, where he began taking piano lessons at the age of seven while living with relatives.[12] In 1954, at the age of eight, Mercury was sent to study at St. Peter's School, a British-style boarding school for boys, in Panchgani near Bombay.[13] Inheriting his father's interest in philately, between 9 and 12 years old Mercury collected stamps, many of which were from the British Commonwealth.[14] One of the rare personal possessions of Mercury in museum ownership, his stamp album, is displayed in the collection of the Postal Museum in London.[14] At the age of 12, he formed a school band, the Hectics, and covered rock and roll artists such as Cliff Richard, Elvis Presley and Little Richard.[15][16] One of Mercury's former bandmates from the Hectics has said "the only music he listened to, and played, was Western pop music".[17] A friend recalls that he had "an uncanny ability to listen to the radio and replay what he heard on piano".[18] It was also at St. Peter's where he began to call himself "Freddie". In February 1963, he moved back to Zanzibar where he joined his parents at their flat.[19]
Fleeing to England
In the spring of 1964, Mercury and his family fled to England from Zanzibar to escape the violence of the revolution against the Sultan of Zanzibar and his mainly Arab government,[20] in which thousands of ethnic Arabs and Indians were killed.[21] They moved to 19 Hamilton Close, Feltham, Middlesex, a town 13 miles (21 km) west of central London. The Bulsaras briefly relocated to 122 Hamilton Road, before settling into a small house at 22 Gladstone Avenue in late October.[22] After first studying art at Isleworth Polytechnic in West London, Mercury studied graphic art and design at Ealing Art College, graduating with a diploma in 1969.[23] He later used these skills to design heraldic arms for his band Queen...Wikipedia

Abstract Series 48 - The Mark Sandman Tribute Concert
Boston to honour Mark Sandman with memorial concert on Sunday
Members and fans of the Boston music community will come together on Sunday to honor the memory of Mark Sandman, the late frontman of famed rockers Morphine. A memorial concert will take place at Pacific Park in Cambridge (at Sidney and Pacific Streets) from 1 to 7 p.m. with a parade/procession beginning at Mark Sandman Square (at the Middle East in Central Square) at 12:30 p.m. Performing Sandman's music at the free concert will be his former bandmates now in Orchestra Morphine, Elastic Waste Band and Treat Her Right. Local outfits Zili Misik, Mean Creek, Rite Hook, Faces on Film, Mariachi Internationale and Mickey Bones will also perform.
The concert marks the 10th anniversary of Sandman's death and comes just three days after what would have been his 57th Birthday. The Morphine singer/bassist and co-founder of Hi-N-Dry Records died of a heart attack after collapsing on stage at the Nel Nome del Rock festival in Palestrina, Italy on July 3, 1999. As well as celebrating the life and work of one of the city's favorite sons of the local music scene, the Memorial Concert will focus attention on the Mark Sandman Music Project, based in the newly renovated Arts in the Armory building in Somerville.The Music Project is a not-for-profit, community-based organization which seeks to foster recreational, education and artistic goals by expanding young people’s opportunities to participate in music.
The concert site will include a fund-raising store selling CDs donated to the Music Project by musicians from across the country. Harmonix, who will have a Beatles Rock Band stand at the Festival and will raffle products. All proceeds will go to the Music Project. An online auction is also being administrated by charitybuzz.com.
To coincide with the memorial concert, Hi-N-Dry Records is offering a variety of tribute songs and other Sandman-related tracks on the label's website. This week's offering is a recording of Morphine's "Honey White" by Les Claypool with Morphine members Billy Conway, Jerome Deupree and Dana Colley. All current week downloads are free but fans are to make a donation to the Sandman Project in whatever amount they think is reasonable

Neil McCormick, author of Killing Bono, is a childhood friend of U2 frontman Bono. I found out about this book while listening to the excellent reformed theology podcast White Horse Inn. Michael Horton read an excerpt McCormick's experience at Mount Temple, a nondenominational school:
"A consequences of its being the only nondenominational state school in Catholic Ireland was that most pupils where drawn from Dublin's Protestant minority. The school itself, however, toed no sectarian line, offering Religious Education (RE) classes characterized by a kind of woolly Christian liberalism, presided over by a well-meaning but - as far as I was concerned - drippily ineffective young teacher named Sophie Shirley. There would be Bible readings and class discussions in which Jesus took on the character of a beatific hippie while God seemed to be personified as an avuncular old geezer who only wanted what was best for His extended family - if that was the case, I wondered, why was I being kept awake at night wondering if the torments of Hell awaited me when I died? I would fire this and related questions at my long-suffering teaching but I never received satisfactory answers, just platitudes about Jesus loving me."
Thus begins my new relationship with Mr. McCormick. I'll be interested to see how this ends up.

Mark Edward Smith (born 5 March 1957) is the lead singer, lyricist, frontman, and sole constant member of English post-punk band The Fall
Smith wasworking-class family in Broughton, Salford, in Lancashire. Smith claimed that Alfred Henry Hook - a soldier who fought at Rorke's Drift - was an ancestor of his father.
He formed The Fall (named after the novel by Camus).
Smith has won much acclaim for his lyrical style, which mixes elements of social realism, surrealism, and absurdism, dwelling on subjects as far removed as unemployment and football violence to time travel and ghosts, all with the same wit, astute humour and precarious balance between brutalism and intellect.
Smith has also appeared as a guest vocalist for Edwyn Collins, Inspiral Carpets, Elastica, Long Fin Killie.
Smith has also periodically acted as guest contributor to publications including the NME. He has appeared in an acting role in several television programmes and films. He made a cameo in the Michael Winterbottom film 24 Hour Party People.

I always wonder why they choose the images they do for the show, and if there is some meaning for the band or for the song, but this one is simply cool, as the person in the image stares out at the crowd. Boston to honour Mark Sandman with memorial concert on Sunday
Members and fans of the Boston music community will come together on Sunday to honor the memory of Mark Sandman, the late frontman of famed rockers Morphine. A memorial concert will take place at Pacific Park in Cambridge (at Sidney and Pacific Streets) from 1 to 7 p.m. with a parade/procession beginning at Mark Sandman Square (at the Middle East in Central Square) at 12:30 p.m. Performing Sandman's music at the free concert will be his former bandmates now in Orchestra Morphine, Elastic Waste Band and Treat Her Right. Local outfits Zili Misik, Mean Creek, Rite Hook, Faces on Film, Mariachi Internationale and Mickey Bones will also perform.
The concert marks the 10th anniversary of Sandman's death and comes just three days after what would have been his 57th Birthday. The Morphine singer/bassist and co-founder of Hi-N-Dry Records died of a heart attack after collapsing on stage at the Nel Nome del Rock festival in Palestrina, Italy on July 3, 1999. As well as celebrating the life and work of one of the city's favorite sons of the local music scene, the Memorial Concert will focus attention on the Mark Sandman Music Project, based in the newly renovated Arts in the Armory building in Somerville.The Music Project is a not-for-profit, community-based organization which seeks to foster recreational, education and artistic goals by expanding young people’s opportunities to participate in music.
The concert site will include a fund-raising store selling CDs donated to the Music Project by musicians from across the country. Harmonix, who will have a Beatles Rock Band stand at the Festival and will raffle products. All proceeds will go to the Music Project. An online auction is also being administrated by charitybuzz.com.
To coincide with the memorial concert, Hi-N-Dry Records is offering a variety of tribute songs and other Sandman-related tracks on the label's website. This week's offering is a recording of Morphine's "Honey White" by Les Claypool with Morphine members Billy Conway, Jerome Deupree and Dana Colley. All current week downloads are free but fans are to make a donation to the Sandman Project in whatever amount they think is reasonable

NoGoD has been active in the Japanese music scene (and the European/international as well) for nearly 10 years.
Formed by frontman Dancho in 2005, and have performed with the same members since 2006. They have been active internationally in Asia since 2010, and are now ready to conquer Europe in the same way: through their music.
Their core message that “if a person believes in one core element, said element can become their own personal God. The band is striving to become just that.” NoGoD wants to be your God (in the sense of a core element).
A few other things the band is famous for are guitarist Kyrie’s special 7 string guitar technique, something a lot of guitarists strive to aspire to themselves.
And vocalist Dancho’s comical interaction with the audience when on stage, adding to the fun of the performance as well as displaying their love for lives and music.
Theological and philosophical principles behind the band aside they are of course most famous for their shironuri make-up, visual kei, looks and of course their music itself!
Whilst the band is known for it’s heavy (metal) style sounds, that remain quite catchy to the listener’s ear.
To achieve their own particular style they weaved in influences from J-rock, J-pop and of course the genre they are best known for: metal.
What is certain is that this band offers musical attractions to fans of many different genres, not just the visual kei or metal ones. They’re a great band that genuinely wants to build a solid fan base on the European market with their music and excellent instrumental technique.
So if you are visiting Japan Expo on Saturday the 5th or Sunday the 6th of July, make sure to check out NoGoD on their stage!
