Abstract Series 48 - The Mark Sandman Tribute Concert
Boston to honour Mark Sandman with memorial concert on Sunday
Members and fans of the Boston music community will come together on Sunday to honor the memory of Mark Sandman, the late frontman of famed rockers Morphine. A memorial concert will take place at Pacific Park in Cambridge (at Sidney and Pacific Streets) from 1 to 7 p.m. with a parade/procession beginning at Mark Sandman Square (at the Middle East in Central Square) at 12:30 p.m. Performing Sandman's music at the free concert will be his former bandmates now in Orchestra Morphine, Elastic Waste Band and Treat Her Right. Local outfits Zili Misik, Mean Creek, Rite Hook, Faces on Film, Mariachi Internationale and Mickey Bones will also perform.
The concert marks the 10th anniversary of Sandman's death and comes just three days after what would have been his 57th Birthday. The Morphine singer/bassist and co-founder of Hi-N-Dry Records died of a heart attack after collapsing on stage at the Nel Nome del Rock festival in Palestrina, Italy on July 3, 1999. As well as celebrating the life and work of one of the city's favorite sons of the local music scene, the Memorial Concert will focus attention on the Mark Sandman Music Project, based in the newly renovated Arts in the Armory building in Somerville. The Music Project is a not-for-profit, community-based organization which seeks to foster recreational, education and artistic goals by expanding young people’s opportunities to participate in music.
The concert site will include a fund-raising store selling CDs donated to the Music Project by musicians from across the country. Harmonix, who will have a Beatles Rock Band stand at the Festival and will raffle products. All proceeds will go to the Music Project. An online auction is also being administrated by charitybuzz.com.
To coincide with the memorial concert, Hi-N-Dry Records is offering a variety of tribute songs and other Sandman-related tracks on the label's website. This week's offering is a recording of Morphine's "Honey White" by Les Claypool with Morphine members Billy Conway, Jerome Deupree and Dana Colley. All current week downloads are free but fans are to make a donation to the Sandman Project in whatever amount they think is reasonable

When the ex-Hurricane (an '80s heavy metal band) singer, Kelly Hansen reached out to Foreigners Management and send his demo, he didn't wait long to be asked to join the band on the road.
But back in the early days of Foreigner, nothing was that easy and straightforward.
Although Foreigner 's first five albums were loaded with hits and sold over 50 million albums, from the start things were tense within the band. There was a long list of well documented issues and differences between the American lead singer, Lou Gramm and the British guitarist-songwriter, Mick Jones. At the time, when Jones was asked if his relationship with Lou was comparable to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of Rolling Stones, he said, "Yes, I think so...But then you have to have a bit of tension, really in any band!".
As much as Lou was an amazing singer -with a rear vocal ability to live through every Foreigners song, in 2002 Gramm left the band -and for the last time.
Despite the ongoing tension between two of the original members, Gramm's departure left Mick Jones with a big dilemma -and forced him to take time off.
Enough time to -re-evaluate his direction with the band. As much as dealing with his personal demons...
In the early 2004, Jones returned refreshed -and this time with the mission to resurrect Foreigner's prestige - which he once said has been declining since the '90s . Throughout the '90s, this band like many others bands of the classic rock era was suffering badly. Beyond that, there were many personal differences in the band, that never really seemed to settle.
However, in 2005,- since the arrival of the new - and amazingly talented lead singer, Kelly Hansen, in the band -everything seems more stable, with a new and refreshing dynamique..
Mick Jones, the co-founder of the band and the man who has crafted some of the rock music's most enduring songs - this time, took totally new approach, musically and with his songwritting.
Jones has also 'allowed' Hansen to give the tune his own spin... and add personal element of excitement and energy while he perform on stage! (and he is not Steven Tyler's twin brother-really!!)
The key is that - the new frontman and very talented lead singer, Kelly Hansen is very much emotionally involved in all new and old Foreigner songs - which he brilliantly (and provocatively) demonstrated during their High Voltage Festival set/show!
With their new album "Can't Slow Down" - the first studio effort featured Kelly Hansen,
it is fair to say that for Jones and the rest of the Foreigners fans,
'IT FEELS, JUST LIKE THE FIRST TIME!!
Former Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page wasn’t exactly naked at the PNE 2010 concert on Sep 04, 2010, but he laid bare his soul simply by being himself. During the concert, he focused on establishing himself as a new solo artist happy to have left the group that had made him well-known and which he had also made famous in return. He acknowledge that part of the history, made references to it frequently but also hinted that he had moved on.
In the Vancouver concert, he sang songs from his latest solo album Page One including Clifton Springs and All The Young Monogamists and covered a few old material as well, notably Jane and Brian Wilson which he wrote himself some 20 years ago. This is a new Steven Page we are seeing. A bit goofy yet with much seriousness about his work though you may not feel it and even if he was simply doing a bit of tango on stage.
