If anyone has watched "Trapped", the Icelandic TV series from 2015, this is the road to Siglufjordur, where the entire series was shot. The landscape is jaw-droppingly beautiful and the place is only reachable via sea or through a tunnel, the one of which I posted an image earlier today. So "trapped" is just about how you feel when arriving there in freezing temperatures, and bear in mind that this pano was shot in May, so not the real winter anymore!
With fresh snow and freezing temperatures, a Burlington Northern freight climbs Montana’s Marias Pass at Java West on March 3, 1989, amidst the beauty of Glacier National Park in wintertime.
This is a picture taken a few days ago before the freezing temperatures settled in North Texas on February 27. They do not look that nice today.
Mercy on the flowers because it is not Spring yet. Even if it were, it’s not a guarantee that we won’t have more freezing temperatures.
Yes, I know, St. Moritz again... I don't deserve an encore for these photos but I do feel like I need to share them, all with different angels, different exposures and changing time of day. All I know is... I froze my rear-end taking these late in the evening and then early in the morning in sub-freezing temperatures and at one point I slipped on black ice and nearly broke my cameras! Thankfully my cameras survived but I was pretty jarred for a few hours.
So forgive me, but here is St. Moritz, encore. :)
Here you can see my breakfast spot from this morning. I'm sitting on the edge of the Hoher Schneeberg (in front of my feet it's really the edge) in Bohemian Switzerland, part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, and watching the waves of the sea of fog drift past me.
Incidentally, I have found that in terms of the calming effect it makes no difference whether the sea is spread out in front of me as water in liquid form or as mist in the form of small floating droplets. Sea is sea.
The classic sound of the sea alone wasn't available to me this morning. And the forest behind me hardly had any leaves left that could possibly have compensated for that.
But despite the freezing temperatures, a surprising number of birds could be heard.

Today it was really really cold in the mountains and because we had freezing temperatures for the last couple of days I wanted to visit a waterfall - in the hope that it is already covered in ice...
The waterfalls at the Tatzelwurm are waterfalls of the Auerbach (a brook) over several up to 10 m high cascades in the Mangfall Mountains, a part of the Bavarian Alps.
The waterfall and the inn, which has been in existence for a long time, were given their name more than 750 years ago after the Tatzelwurm Legend.
The Tatzelwurm or Tatzlwurm is an alpine fable animal, also known as Dazzelwurm, Praatzelwurm, Springwurm, stone cat, Stollenwurm, biting worm or Bergstutzen, in the area of the French Alps as Arassas. He is considered a small relative of dragon and lindworm and should occur especially in the Alps and in the Alpine foothills.
The waterfall may also have contributed to the legend and may be considered as the origin of the legend: You hear the thunder of the falling water and see the rising spray from a distance, but the gorge and the waterfall can be seen only when you stand directly in front of it , Anyone who moves carelessly in this area, can plunge into the gorge and be "devoured by Tatzelwurm".
Gordon and I hiked up into the Cairngorm hills to around 900m.
A day with blustery strong winds and showers of hail and snow! We had looked and looked for the Ptarmigan and had given up seeing these beautiful birds.
When on our way down we came across 3 just off the path. Luck was on our side, and we both got our very first photographs of this very special bird that lives in extreme weather conditions and freezing temperatures.
The ptarmigan is a game bird, slightly larger than a grey partridge. In summer, it is a mixture of grey, brown and black above with white bellies and wings. In winter, it becomes totally white except for its tail and eye-patch, which remain black.
It breeds in the highest mountains of the Highlands of Scotland on the Arctic like landscape there. Birds are residents, seldom moving far from breeding sites. In severe cold weather, birds may move from the highest ground to the edge of forests.
What they eat : Shoots, leaves, leaf buds, berries and insects.

Freezing temperatures and water offer up so many interesting forms. As long as one has sure footing, it's an adventure to headout on the ice.

The painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) is the most widespread native turtle of North America. Painted turtle: It lives in relatively slow-moving fresh waters, from southern Canada to northern Mexico and from the Atlantic to the Pacific. They have been shown to prefer large wetlands with long periods of inundation and emergent vegetation. This species is one of the few that is specially adapted to tolerate freezing temperatures for extended periods of time due to an antifreeze-like substance in their blood that keeps their cells from freezing. The adult painted turtle is 13–25 cm (5.1–9.8 in) long; the male is smaller than the female. The turtle's top shell is dark and smooth, without a ridge. Its skin is olive to black with red, orange, or yellow stripes on its extremities. The subspecies can be distinguished by their shells: the eastern has straight-aligned top shell segments; the midland has a large gray mark on the bottom shell; the western has a red pattern on the bottom shell.
I wish I could send these freezing temperatures to Australia, so that the fires could be extinguished soon....

Not yet, still freezing temperatures. We had a little bit of sunshine today that melted the snow on the roof. I hope my Pavonia bush, on which the icicles formed, will be ok.
This is at the entrance of one of the parks in Jackson. The park is huge, however I wasn't able to go deep into it because of the freezing temperature. I will probably go back when the weather permits.
As mentioned a few pictures before, the south west of Belgium was paralysed by snowfall in combination with freezing temperatures. A few days later, some abandoned trains needed to be towed to the workshop of Charleroi Sud. A first convoi with 3 "pig noses" was followed by another one with two 800 EMU's and one 700 series.

This plant winters over in the house. We put it outside at the end of May and it was hit with freezing temperatures. Some of the leaves were damaged, but it has managed to blossom.
OK, so maybe he wasn’t giving me the stink eye directly, but he looked mighty irritable standing alone in a fork of the river in freezing temperatures.
I never fully let go of last summer's bliss. I thought it would be wrenched from me in the form of ice storms and freezing temperatures, but strangely this year it wasn't. And now, as the spring days grow longer, and I bask in the unseasonably warm weather, I feel that summer lightness prematurely returning, full of memory and familiarity.
With the freezing temperatures and some heavy winds we can get these wild ice formations on the lake.
VIA 65 is passing through Montreal West with VIA 6416 and seven LRC cars. Unfortunately rain and above freezing temperatures after Christmas have led to most of the snow Montreal had melting.
Royal Scot class no. 46115 'Scots Guardsman' provides a stirring sight as she powers away from York past Copmanthorpe on 11th December 2022. I was unsure whether this empty stock working, 5Z24 from York Holgate to Carnforth, would be diesel hauled, however, in the event the near freezing temperature produced a nice exhaust from the Scot which had worked the charter to Edinburgh the previous day. 47804 was on the rear... thankfully.
During the cold winter season, bison develop thick, woolly coats that help protect them from freezing temperatures and harsh winds. It is said that a bison's winter coat is so thick and provides insulation so effective that when snow accumulates on its coat, it will not melt from the heat of the bison's skin.

"Winter is Coming" is primarily known as the motto of House Stark in the television series Game of Thrones and its source novels. It also refers to the first episode of the series, which aired in 2011 and serves as an introduction to the show's characters and its brutal, realistic fantasy world. The phrase is a warning of hard times ahead, symbolizing a need for preparation and vigilance against threats both internal and external, such as the literal winter and the supernatural forces it represents.
In real life winters here in Devon tend to be mild and wet.
A few bright crisp cold days mixed with lots of dull wet cold overcast days.
I know the freezing temperatures and polar nights of other parts of northern Europe bring their own challenges but it would be nice to be "less wet".

Even after a week of sub-freezing temperatures, the Falls and Cascades at Great Falls National Park along the Potomac River still flow. This is a 30 second exposure with the Lee Big Stopper 10-Stop ND Filter. Considering the crowds on the viewing platform, I'm impressed that I was able to pull this off. Taken 7 January 2018 at View Point #2, Great Falls National Park, Virginia, USA.
Seems like this guy did not get the weather advisory about how cold it is and was content to ignore the freezing temperatures and spend hours searching for something tasty in the tree.
Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe (and warm).

Very cool! Tomorrow we will have great frost and freezing temperatures! I'll shoot!
As I write this, it’s been below freezing temperatures almost constantly for 5 weeks. This has been a harsh winter for us so far but it usually is cold here in North Central Idaho during the winter months. I grew up in the central San Joaquin Valley of California where cold meant it was ...

Chinese Pistache, Pistacia chinensis (Anacardiaceae), native to central and western China. It is planted worldwide due to its attractive fruit and fall foliage. It does not tolerate shade but tolerates freezing temperatures down to -25C.
The Haleakala silversword is found on the island of Maui at elevations above 6,900 ft (2,100 metres) on the dormant Haleakalā volcano. This succulent has numerous sword-like leaves covered with silver hairs. The skin and hairs are strong enough to resist the wind and freezing temperature of this altitude and protect the plant from dehydration and the sun. The plant's base of leaves, arranged in a spherical formation at ground level of the plant, dominates for the majority of the plant's life—which may be greater than 50 years. The leaves are arranged so that they and the hairs of the leaves can raise the temperature of the shoot-tip leaves up to 68 F (20C), having adapted to the extreme high-altitude temperatures by focusing the sunlight to converge at this point and warm the plant.

This past weekend Winter Storm Jonas blew in across the north eastern part of the US, dipping down far enough south to even effect where we live, too.
With freezing temperatures and bone chilling winds suddenly upon us, the activity at the bird feeders was understandably non-stop craziness!
At one point several European Starlings showed up and "took ownership" of the seed cake and suet cake feeders. There were other feeders, too, but the Starlings were not impressed.
This particular Starling went to check out the hotmeats feeder, pepper treated sunflower meats, and then flew up to this perch to give me a most disapproving look.
This shot shows the mountain on the west side of Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon. Water has run down the side and frozen in place so although this is not usually a waterfall, it looks like one in freezing temperatures.

I noticed this Crocus one of the first days that there was enough sun without above freezing temperatures. These ones near the pond and backed with some solar energy saving rocks are the first to show up. The ones in the side and front yard are usually later.
Another extremely cold day, high -11C low -15C with a windchill @ -20C. River still open along current flow to the dam. Ongoing freezing temperatures should freeze this section of the St. Lawrence soon.
Another shot from Jökulsárlón. I just love how wild this location is, especially on the day of our visit. High winds, freezing temperatures and driving rain made shooting very tricky but great fun.
Night shot, Westminster bridge looking at the Houses of Parliament and the Elizabeth Clock tower, which houses the famous bell "Big Ben"
This shot was made pretty damn tricky by the fact I forgot to bring a tripod, the freezing temperature, and the fact I'd spent at least a good hour in tears sitting at the roadside....
Every shot I try and take may not have great technical value, but I try and allow a little bit of my world to spill into each, and this one, this was a tough one...
Alpinia purpurata, red ginger, also called ostrich plume and pink cone ginger, are native Malaysian plants with showy flowers on long brightly colored red bracts. They look like the bloom, but the true flower is the small white flower on top.
It has cultivars called Jungle King and Jungle Queen. Red Ginger grows in Hawaii, Trinidad, Grenada, St. Lucia, Dominica, St. Vincent, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico, Suriname (where its Dutch name is 'bokkepoot', billy-goat's foot), and many Central American nations, including Belize. It is also found in Samoa, where it is the national flower, and is locally called "teuila."
Red ginger can also be grown in South Florida since, in general, the region does not fall below freezing temperatures. It prefers partial shade and moist humid conditions, although it can tolerate full sun in some climates. It tends to like to be well watered and not left to dry out.
Ginger can also be grown as a houseplant and its cut flowers can be used in arrangements.
Ginger tends to spread.
