After the conquest of the Aztecs by Hernan Cortes between 1519 and 1521, the Spaniards began the gradual but irreversible conversion of the conquered people. It was not a gentle process, as attested to by Bartolome De Las Casas and others. Heston is not particularly interested in the historical record. Instead, the story of the conversion of 9 million Aztecs to Catholicism is a canvas upon which he paints another version of his take on the dangers that the superstitions of the Catholic religion pose to the secular virtues of the United States. (In this scenario, the vigor of the United States is allied to the pagan religion of the Aztecs - a very curious connection, to say the least.)

Rob and I met in Alabama at the Lake Hypatia Alabama Freethought Advance. He was close with Clark Adams, the late freethought activist, and Rob and I met this year as Clark's memorial service was in Alabama and his ashes were scattered on Lake Hypatia. We had an extra Penn & Teller ticket (both are avowed freethinkers and had met and known Clark), so we called and offered it to Rob, who met us at the Rio.
