This cartoon concerns an incident in which Thomas DeWitt Talmage alleged that a man in Lima, Ohio, who blasphemed against God, was, in Talmage's words, "cut down, smoke poured from his mouth and nostrils, and he was dying for days, while nobody could go near him." Heston, who came from that part of the country, wrote a letter to The Truth Seeker saying what nonsense the whole story was, following it up with another letter in The Truth Seeker dated December 4 (the day of the cartoon's publication) that noted with scorn "the gullible gudgeons of the orthodox variety [who] hav [sic] swallowed the red-hot petrified man of Lima, 0."
