have a great weekend!
I'm frantically writing my thesis for my master's degree this month, so haven't taken much time to post my usual 5 photos per week. But these are a few from the last two weekends.
There was no moon the night we camped on Nkhoma, and the Milky Way was bursting out. My 6D is still in the shop, but the crop sensor 7D still did a great job catching the starlight. Panorama stich of 6 frames.
5 male Mallard ducks all frantically trying to mate with the captive female. In our park the males out number the females by about 7 to 1. Often the males go after females with duckling which causes them to flee in panic and leaving the duckilings unguarded until they can return. This is often when the gulls come down to take them. This female eventually managed to break free and leave. So far this year at least one has been drowned by the males.

The wooden bridge at my local nature reserve is usually populated with many gulls by late afternoon, causing squabbles and frantic activity. Generally, the gulls will tolerate humans walking up to them to within a safe distance and then they will all depart

The Gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven | Why Is the Religious World Always Frantically Resisting and Condemning God’s New Work?
The two times that God has become flesh to walk the earth and carry out the work of saving man, He has been met with the utmost resistance, condemnation and frantic persecution from leaders in the religious world. This fact has puzzled and even shocked people: Why is it that every time God unfolds a stage of new work He is always met with this kind of treatment? Why is it that those who most frantically and aggressively resist God are the religious leaders who read the Bible over and over again and who have served the Lord for many years? Why is it that those religious leaders that people see as being the most devout, the most faithful and the most obedient to the Lord are actually unable to be compatible with God, but instead are the enemies of God? Could it be that God’s work is wrong? Could it be that God’s actions are not amenable to reason? That is certainly not the case! There are two fundamental reasons why the religious leaders are able to play the role of resisting God and become the enemies of God, and these are: The first reason rests with these people not having knowledge of the work of the Holy Spirit, nor do they have knowledge of the principles of God’s work. They always rely on their limited knowledge of the Bible, theological theories and people’s conceptions and imaginations to delimit God’s work that is always new and never old; the second reason is that, since mankind is so deeply corrupted by Satan, its nature is arrogant and self-conceited, it despises and hates the truth, and it especially values status. Put together, these two reasons have led to the tragedy of mankind forsaking and condemning the true way time and again throughout history.

Perthshire - After a frantic burst of foraging this Red Squirrel suddenly stopped and appeared to be listening for chattering Hazelnuts to give their location away!!
After about an hour and a half snorkeling about "Turtle Town", near Wailea and Makena in Maui, the leaders of the snorkeling excursion started calling everyone on board to leave. No one had really seen an elusive sea turtle yet during the whole trip, so I kind of dragged my feet (flippers) on the way back to the boat--hoping I'd see a turtle at the last minute.
When there was literally only me and one other person left in the water, we spotted a well-hidden turtle on the bottom, nestled under a little coral shelf. I figured that was better than nothing, took a few snaps with my camera, then all of the sudden, she bolted for the surface!
The warnings of the $10,000 fine for harassing green sea turtles still ringing in my ears, it was all I could do to try to swim away from her as she came up right at me! She surfaced about 6-8 inches away from me, casually checking me out while I frantically tried to put some distance between us (besides, was way too close to take pics w/ the camera I had). I was actually worried about kicking her with my flippers as I tried to get way.
Somehow during my excitement, I managed to squeeze off a couple decent shots of the encounter. After finally getting on the boat (last person in the water), I definitely got some awed looks from other passengers--and some jealous glares from my kids. All in all, a pretty magical experience.
Pliny the Elder called our beautiful Blue Starflower 'Buglossos', and claimed it promotes joy and merriment as medicine. It is said Roman soldiers used an extract in wine to provide for courage in battle, and since at least the medieval medical school of Salerno the plant has been used as an antidote to depression and melancholy...: 'Ego Borago, gaudia semper ago'. Thus it's been used as a treatment for frantic and 'lunatic' persons.
I wonder what it's like to be a Bumblebee, seemingly so frantic and unpredictable. Even when it's mining Borago for nectar. Indeed, that's what this Early Bumblebee is doing here. It's bypassing the outer reproductive organs (see inset) of Blueflower and going right to the sweet heart of the matter, the tissues around Blue's ovary, with pistil and stamens as a foothold.
Judging by its frayed wings, I think the end of flight for our frantic nectarhunter is not far away!

Every amateur or professional photographer knows it well; behind a picture there is a story... I was starting you to photograph a funny butterfly (which I would probably show you one day). When I hear a child's voice, "Daddy, Daddy, look there's a snake!" Leaving the butterfly behind, I join the shore and join the little family.... There, lurking under the cover, by the river, I see a viperine snake having grabbed a green grouse by its legs, another smaller snake is frantically shaking around the scene. Misplaced I approach with infinite caution, so as not to disturb the predator, so vulnerable at that moment!
The smallest flees quickly, but busy at her biggest feast, 60 to 70 cms continues to swallow her prey. The poor green frog emits weak plaintive croaking.... The children join me, they are captivated by what they observe... An opportunity for me to show pedagogy, explaining the difference between viper and snake, insisting on the need to protect them, both of them... It is difficult to answer them on the suffering of the frog other than by the necessity of the snake to feed it.... In short before this meeting I was just thinking that I hadn't seen a snake for a long time! Well here is the life, my question gave me a nice gift, but also to the little family...

The madness of the pre-Christmas just had a days rest and already the madness of 'THE SALES' start...
After spending their money on presents, people are now falling into the 'bargain' trap.
The decorations will not be admired anymore, just a frantic rush to find 'THAT BARGAIN'...

Stop! Stranger, stop and shed a tear,
for "Frantic" the hound lies buried here.
On Glyn y Mel Road, Lower Town, Fishguard - I remember this memorial from when I would visit as a child. My great aunt and uncle used to live in the cottages opposite it. In my memory it was backed by an open field dropping down toward the river but now there is a bungalow behind it and the stone flanks the entrance to its off road parking.
It is likely a memorial to one of the 19th Century Squire Worthington's otter hounds.
