When the Eifel National Park was designated in 2004, non-native species of spruce, Scots pine and Douglas fir accounted for the largest share. In order to approach the goal of creating a secondary mixed deciduous forest primeval forest with dominant native tree species, extensive active forest biotope development took place in the first ten years. The removal of the Douglas firs in the Eifel National Park is a targeted measure. For this purpose, the conductive paths running in the bark and in the outer wood sheath are interrupted. The processed trees usually die after two to five years and then form standing deadwood. Increasingly after 2010, spruces and Douglas firs were mostly ringed with chainsaw cuts.
